Aren't spicy books large consumed by a female or fem presenting audience? If I saw what they described in the email, I wouldn't think it was a spicy book for the female reader. Sounds like someone wants to beef up their "secure" folder.
Now if I got a email from an old guy saying he'll pay me to promote books with my "naughty bits", I don't know rather to laugh my ass off, call the cops, or both.

Yeah! I don't think I saw anyone point that out. Videos can't even say sex properly, what makes anyone think nude women with minimal censoring is gonna be allowed? It just makes it so much more skeevy.

This is so creepy. Personally I‘m currently studying mediadesign and it includes PR to some extend. I‘m almost 99% sure no serious PR firm would ever do something like that. This is the worst PR ever. Also this would be more marketing and not actual PR, so this would have to be his marketing team and not the PR team
He probably personally sent these emails without discussing them with any collaborators first.
Honestly, it's possible he was fishing for porn folder fodder, and was hoping to just tell all the girls, "Sorry, your video isn't good enough, so I won't pay you...but I totes promise I deleted it, okie? uwu"
But then he got called out and is blaming people who work under him instead.

the original email just seemed like a way for the author to get some racy images and videos for his personal collection and he could even withhold the payment until they were the way he wanted them (or maybe not even pay at all). seriously gross
also we’ve worked with pr agencies at my job, they did have the ability to message influencers without us approving every message, but we had talked about what sort of thing we would offer as well as who to target and what content we could expect from them. so the pr excuse seems like bull to be unless they’re not a good pr agency (but he founded it!!!)

As someone who works in PR and marketing, I just thought I’d clear things up for funsies:
1. It’s actually super common for PR to receive a piece of content and vet it before showing talent for final say. This way they can weed out offers/creative/etc. that they know talent will immediately veto or doesn’t fit the bill. But 90% of the time, the talent still has to approve it. So it doesn’t strike me weird that it would go to them for final approval.
HOWEVER
2. I have NEVER, in my nearly ten years career, seen a PR team email claim to be talent or “log in to their email”. Perhaps I’ve seen an assistant or two do that but even they would ALWAYS run the wording by the talent. There’s no way they didn’t know. PR firm or not, that wouldn’t have gone out without their consent.

I'm not up to date on the aftermath of what happened to her other than (I think) her agent and publisher dumped her. When dealing with business things you really should not say anything you wouldn’t be comfortable saying “your honor” after. Like just imagine “yeah I told her to cover up her naughty bits with just a book and send it to me…. Your honor” it just doesn’t work.

I genuinely love hearing about BookTok drama as someone who is very into books and in the book community but doesn't have TikTok. I think the especially dodgy thing about this is that he was intending to view the images and then either approve them or deem them not good enough and suggest changes- there's a good chance he just gets the images, says no to everything, but he now has the images. Or, alternatively, he has the ability to suggest even more provocative changes in the hopes of maybe, just maybe, getting a payout. I'm not saying he would do that, but dangling the money like a carrot on a stick to influencers to get paid sounds like a recipe for trouble.

I listened to an interview with this author years ago, and he mentioned that he has poor judgment, as he is autistic. However, that lack of understanding of social norms lucked him into getting the publishing opportunities he had because he would just approach anyone without embarrassment. He mentioned that he once just visited Stephen King's home, simply because he saw it from the outside. He didn't even know Stephen King, and just figured that he's a fellow horror author. Thinking back on it later, he realized how lucky he was not kicked out on his a**. I'm paraphrasing from an interview I listened to years ago, so I probably got some information wrong.
I have no idea if he did these things with predatory intent or not. Just saying, I'm not surprised that an autistic author of an older generation has ended up in an awkward situation such as this. I still think he should've been called out and told what he did was wrong, though because it really was creepy. I'd have chills if I received such an icky email from an author.
