Been watching your channel off and on, since you used to play with your kids, and it’s impressive how you have moved from strength to strength. Just a solid teach, and made an already smooth rulebook and game an easy transition for my son. We played a few rounds to get our hands dirty, then I sat him down and we watched your bit. Every once in a while I’d catch him nodding his head in agreement, or muttering about something you’d mentioned. Then we went back for a few more rounds , before setting it aside to finish together tomorrow. It takes a good teacher to be able to make the subject relevant to both a 50-year old dad and his 7-year old son! Thanks for helping us have yet one more thing we enjoy sharing together.
That is was an incredibly heartwarming comment to read. I certainly make these videos in the hopes that they'll be helpful, but it means a lot to hear a personalized example like that. I hope you both have a great time playing Aaron!
I'm late to the party, but I have to say that you really are the king of "How to play" videos. I read the rules, tried a few rounds by myself and then watched your video. You answered any questions I had left. Thank you.
Seeing Rodney teach Expeditions is just so wonderful. I first came to this channel to learn Scythe years ago and seeing him now teach the sequel makes me so happy :) Can't wait to get my hands on a copy!
Rodney - just to say an enormous thank you! Your positivity, clear explanations and general approach make these videos both incredibly helpful and a joy to watch. Thank you so much for all you do.
@@Trainer_Orange you could be right - we'd probably have to ask the publisher. I really just assumed that since I heard Jamey talking about the importance of taking palletes into account when developing board games so as to benefit the colorblind. I know there's different types of colorblindness, too.
I have watched a lot of videos over the years to learn how to play. I've watched ones here and many other channels. This video is damn impressive. You made the teach of this game feel natural, smooth and effortless. I know not everyone can handle this game because there is more going on than they may enjoy. But this teach could make anyone feel like they are capable and not intimidated by what is otherwise quite a game to learn. I'm just in awe. Well done.
love the video as usual. I just found out this game existed a couple days ago, and instantly purchased it when I read "sequel to Scythe" and "Jamey Stegmeier," before I even saw how it's played. I'm glad to see so many of the Stegmeier Classics make a return, but in a more streamlined fashion, like placing stars, increasing power, getting variable points for stars based on other factors, etc. Super excited to get this one to the table
Having just rewatched the Scythe video this weekend in order to teach it to new players, this was a welcome surprise! Plus I was talking about Expeditions at the table. Kismet. It was incredible to see the immediate growth you have had as a person when it comes to teaching and see how much the production values have improved as a channel. Lessons learned all around, and that makes me quite happy! Also, as someone who has literally everything for Scythe, I was on the fence about Expeditions. I have a collection of close to 400 games (I think) and have been slowing down new acquisitions. This helped me decide that I will almost definitely be adding this to my collection!
I think it's great that the wrapped the Scythe game, and instead of making more of the same, decided to create something new (but set in that world). And thanks for the kind words Jim - I appreciate that you're enjoying the work.
@@WatchItPlayed Precisely! Part of the reason I was not sure about obtaining it, was because I was not sure just how much of the mechanics from Scythe carried over. Great explanation. But one thing, the map tokens ARE a limited resource, so if you trash them, don’t put them back in supply. This is talked about around 19:00

Excellent video!!! Just a question, in my first turn my mech move to a space that let me gather one yellow worker and after that play a card to end my turn, then in my next turn i decide to gather and play...so i can gather another yellow worker from the same spot???
Rodney does a great job explaining games. This game, though, seems to have not only a lot of symbology, but a lot of terminology FOR the symbology that needs to be understood thoroughly, because it seems to me that there are many ways to misinterpret the overall flow of the game and the zones of play. I'm going to have to watch this video multiple times to get a grasp on it. It seems very complex.
We hope to have a solo play through on the channel soon as well, and you may find that seeing the game in action will help bring the various pieces together for you. Everyone's experience of a game (and rules overhead) will vary, but if it helps, I found that my plays of the game went smoothly once I had the core concepts down (completing quests, melding, upgrading items) - which I hope this video helps with. The icons and the areas for the various cards reinforced the concepts as I played. Thanks for checking out the video Phoenix!
Thanks for the tutorial Rodney! There's one error I noticed though: the rulebook says maps are limited, so you shouldn't put it back in the supply. 19:15
@@WatchItPlayed thanks for clarifying! it said just the opposite of what you said in the rulebook so I assumed the rulebook is correct. but once again your video proved to be more important than the rulebook itself :)
19:18 Trashed map token are also removed from the game, they don’t go back to the supply. Not sure if it makes any difference, but this is what the rulebook says.
I adjusted that in this video after speaking with the publisher. The tokens aren't a limited supply, so there's no real reason to remove them from the game.
For the action marker, could I move the cube from the MOVE space to the GATHER space, or does the marker always need to move next to an already open space next to the cube? I wasn’t sure if “shifting” means only going to an open space next to the space with the cube on it.
The top of page 10 of the rulebook says map tokens are limited, but you said at 19:13 that they are not? Am I looking at an old version of the rulebook?
This is something I spoke to the publisher about during the production of the video. I don't know if they plan to adjust the rule book, but the video is correct.
Hi Rodney, as always love your videos!! So clear and easy to understand! I'm wondering if you know the ruling for quest card 074, how much corruption and coin do you receive? Any help would be wonderful!
I do my best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
Thanks for another great video! We'll be playing this tomorrow. Quick question: I saw one of Jamey Stegmaier's video in which he was showing a pre-production copy of the game and said, "This copy is for Rodney." Do you get to keep the preview copies provided by publishers, or do you give them back and get a retail copy later? (Or both?)
Great video, this game looks great! Quick question, if you trigger the end of the game by playing your fourth glory token, can you claim a fifth achievement during your last turn? I only saw 4 glory tokens, wasn't sure if those are limited. Thanks 😊
One thing you did not mention: The corruption token not only has a color identifying the necessary "skill", but also a left diamond or a right circle that matches the skill piece, in case of color vision impairment.
Hey Dave, yeah, I have - the challenge is finding the time to pull that off :) Making the videos is so time consuming, I'd have trouble making a video about making the videos :) it might be something I try to create as a Patreon video at some point.
Can you perform a 5th upgrade or meld a 5th meteorite and replace one of your original 4? Or, once you have done 4, are those it and you should have been more patient/chosen wiser if you don’t care for one or more of your completed 4?
This: "once you have done 4, are those it and you should have been more patient/chosen wiser if you don’t care for one or more of your completed 4?" Hope that helps!
When taking the boast action can you place more than one star if you meet the conditions for multiple achievements? Great video btw can't wait to get this one
Hi Rodney! I’m sorry but i didn’t really understand the difference between the hand and the active row. Could you tell me more about their characteristics please? :) Thank you!
Do I have it correct that the Corruption tokens have no use throughout the game other than for completing the glory achievements and giving you 2 money at the end of the game?
Gain corruption scores you points at the end of the game, and helps you complete glory achievements, and if you clear the last one form a space using your starting card's ability, you also get to activate that space's uncovered icon. There might also be some card effects that trigger based on the number of corruption tokens you have (but I don't recall off the top of my head).
Can someone let me know... when you play a card, does it instantly go to the active row then resolve? For example, if I play a card saying to discard a card, is the discarded card go into the active row before the card being played?

The top of page 10 of the rulebook says map tokens are limited, but you said at 19:13 that they are not? Am I looking at an old version of the rulebook?
This is something I spoke to the publisher about during the production of the video. I don't know if they plan to adjust the rule book, but the video is correct.
Cool, thank you!
Just wanted to say thanks Rodney!
You're very welcome!
Wowwy! The best teach for one of the hottest games! Great combo!
You're too kind as ever Teej!
Great video. Any chance you'd do a video touring your game collection??
That's probably something I'd be more inclined to do on a Patreon video (might even have already done one, now that I think about it!)
Bravo, Rodney...bravo! 👏👏👏
Thank you kindly!
The video was really helpful also how many board games do you have
Very glad you enjoyed. I don't know the number, but quite a few, I suppose!
My new life goal is to achieve a tie with the same number of components. Great video, this, as always, helped a ton!
I believe in you - achieve that tie Scott! :) Thanks for the kind words!
@@WatchItPlayed Well, my first game I lost 79 to 38 because I couldn't get quests, so I have a bit to go, but I'm working on it ;-)
Thanks for another great video!
(Or both?)
As I recall, that pre-production was not good enough quality for video, so he sent a production copy for me to use on video.
Great video, this game looks great! Quick question, if you trigger the end of the game by playing your fourth glory token, can you claim a fifth achievement during your last turn? I only saw 4 glory tokens, wasn't sure if those are limited. Thanks 😊
Those are limited.
One thing you did not mention: The corruption token not only has a color identifying the necessary "skill", but also a left diamond or a right circle that matches the skill piece, in case of color vision impairment.
That was a smart touch, right?
Really well explaining 👌
Thank you kindly!
@14:25 you resolve Meld only once, not every turn...?
You resolve the meld bonus when you add a new Meld (not every turn).
Ever think of making a, “making of” video showing prep, script changes, camera angles etc…?
Hey Dave, yeah, I have - the challenge is finding the time to pull that off :) Making the videos is so time consuming, I'd have trouble making a video about making the videos :)
it might be something I try to create as a Patreon video at some point.
I feel like you could be a one man variety act with boxes alone.
The Box Juggler? Hmmm, a new stage act, perhaps!
Can you perform a 5th upgrade or meld a 5th meteorite and replace one of your original 4? Or, once you have done 4, are those it and you should have been more patient/chosen wiser if you don’t care for one or more of your completed 4?
This: "once you have done 4, are those it and you should have been more patient/chosen wiser if you don’t care for one or more of your completed 4?"
Hope that helps!
When taking the boast action can you place more than one star if you meet the conditions for multiple achievements? Great video btw can't wait to get this one
Nope, you can only place a single glory token with this action.
Can you place a worker on a card that has been previously placed? I wasn't sure about this.
Nope!
@@WatchItPlayed thanks, I appreciate that response!
Hi, I got a question: if a location tile shows 2 symbols not separated by a slash, do I get to gather both? Thanks
You get both in that case!
I love your videos, they're very well done. Thanks to you I learnt how to play Gloomhaven and now, Expeditions.
Greetings from Mexico 👋🏼
So glad to know you've found them useful - gree4tings back from Canada!
Hi Rodney! I’m sorry but i didn’t really understand the difference between the hand and the active row. Could you tell me more about their characteristics please? :) Thank you!
Hi Sarah, can you give me a time stamp to the section you are asking about? Happy to try to assist!
Woah flashy flourish
Those resource trays you have, are they available still?
Those are Game Trayz.
player board risers thats it i am sold
I thought that was a nice touch too!
Can someone let me know... when you play a card, does it instantly go to the active row then resolve? For example, if I play a card saying to discard a card, is the discarded card go into the active row before the card being played?
Hi Beccie, does this answer the question? th-cam.com/video/YyLBa5DXi1w/w-d-xo.html
Should you sleeve these cards, they don’t seem to get manipulated that much??
I think that's a personal choice. I don't sleeve my games unless it's a deck builder, so I might be a bad one to ask.
Love your clear and thorough way of explaining! Have you by any chance done a how to play for the great western trail second edition?
Thanks Adi. No I haven't done that one.
