As you allude to, in the last 25 seasons the champion has defended their title just 9 times, 8 of them being Rossi and Marquez. Even with two all time greats, the likelihood of a champion defending their title is still under 1/3. We underestimate how rare it is in general to defend the title. One thing also worth mentioning is the type of rider who will take the #1 plate. Those with established brands who have been very successful and popular in lower classes and are more likely to go on to defend titles might actually be less likely to take the #1 plate, so the sample of those who do ride with it will have less of those riders who are likely to go on a streak
It's mainly just because Rossi did it, and Marquez followed suit (the former for superstition, and the latter for marketing reasons) and they've won 58% of the world titles in this millennium.
The first year of the number 1 curse was not in 1999 but in 1993 with the Triple World Champion Wayne Rainey suffering a career ending crash in Misano while he was leading the race and have been crown world champion in the 3 previous years.
It's definitely possible to say it goes that far back, although Rainey did win in 1991 and 1992 with the No. 1, that's mostly why I didn't mention it. Still an absolute tragedy though
@@TheBeehivePaddock But then why you mentioned Mick Doohan ? who won even more than Wayne with the number 1 in 4 consecutive years between 1995 and 1998 with that number after his first title in 1994 with the number 4.
Another good video! But honestly, I never see it as a curse, just a coincidence IMO especially when defending a title is actually very hard in this sport unless you’re one of a kind (i.e Ago, Vale, Marc, Doohan, Hailwood, etc.)
Do a vid on the number 2. Very few riders who finished 2nd have carried the number the next year, first loser title. You’re only supposed to be able to take a number lower than you placed that year, unless nobody else wants it. Plenty of riders have raced with 2, 3, or 4 on their bike but never finished in that position. You’re doing a great job here, I’m enjoying your content.
Maybe at some point, but it's been so talked about over the years that I'm not sure I would add anything to the conversation that hasn't already been said, also the comments section on that video would be a nightmare no matter what I say lol
I hate superstition over this. No 1 looks cool on bikes f1 cars. I hated hamilton not running no 1 plate. Yeah its great for his marketing his brand but put the no 1 on nose so we all kno who champ is
Agreed, I used to love seeing the number 1 in supercross when I was a kid, I always thought it was so cool that you got your own special number if you won a championship lol
Thanks for the support! I appreciate the thought, I will work on it, but I'm loving making vids right now and sadly my health isn't letting me get out much at the moment, so this has been really helpful for keeping me busy. Once I've got more stuff going on, the content will probably slow down a bit.

I dunno about any curse, but I feel like it's a bit braggadocious to keep riding with the number 1 after your first title. Have one year showing off and then get down to business with your normal number. That's what I say anyway.

Pecco was dead set against running the #1 and Ducati forced him to use the #1 🤦🏻♂️
Mir tried to slip it into his number plate in between his numbers.
Unless there are any surprises, lorenzo did the best personal brand with the nr 1 plate imo
Make a video on every drama in the 2015 season

Fun video.
Doohan was just too good for the no. 1 curse and the Ducati Desmo is too good for the same (not mocking Pecco in any way 😅)

Bro should make this video 4 years ago but decided to do it today 😂 are you just woke up from coma? Bagnaia wore it 3 seasons already 😂
I just started the channel lol. I know I'm late to the party on this one but it seemed like a fun thing to talk about
Bagnia be like: 🧍♂️
