What Will Happen If Planes Fly Almost to Space

- Hey air-travelers! What’s your favorite time during a flight? The take-off, the landing? Or maybe the moment your plane climbs just above the clouds? Ahh, the view is magical. But have you ever wondered what would happen if your plane starts to climb even higher? Well, it's time to get some answers.
The first thing you should know is that the higher a plane flies, the faster it goes, and the cheaper it is. Air molecules are responsible for that. And since flying higher is more relaxed, more economic and safer, wouldn’t it make more sense if an airliner flew even higher? Actually, it’s a bit more complicated than that. Let's figure out!

How to save a plane when it’s approaching supersonic speeds 7:49
#planes #aviation #brightside
SUMMARY:
- When a plane flies higher, less air is pushing down from above - therefore the air molecules spread out more, decreasing the air’s density.
- When an aircraft flies through less air molecules, it needs to adjust its speed in order to get enough air and lift itself.
- When the plane travels rapidly at higher altitudes, it consumes less fuel while taking you to your destination faster.
- All the turbulence, clouds, rain and bad weather in general, stay below the plane’s altitude, so we can enjoy a smooth, non-eventful flight.
- Pilots have more time to fix the problem and communicate with the controllers before they make an emergency landing.
- One of the main reasons a jet can’t fly higher is because there won’t be enough air flowing through its engine.
- When the air density decreases, the engine thrust does the same.
- When both the speed of sound and temperature drop in high altitudes, the true airspeed will increase. And at some point, they’ll meet. That’s what pilots call the coffin corner, and it’s as dangerous as it sounds.
- If a plane reaches that point, and it decelerates, it’ll go into a low speed stall. If it goes faster, it’ll end up in a high-speed stall. Neither of those are safe.
- Planes usually fly at around Mach 0.7 or 70% of the speed of sound. If an aircraft goes faster than that, it can cause shockwaves to form.
- If all these events happen in the coffin corner, it’ll break the aircraft into pieces.
- At certain altitudes, an aircraft has a minimum speed limit and a maximum speed limit.
- As the aircraft goes slower, the drag increases. The slower the jet goes, the more thrust it needs to be controlled.
- But the way they save a plane when it’s approaching supersonic speeds is a whole different story - and this is actually a bit more common.
- They slowly bring the thrust back a little bit, and gradually raise the air brakes. Everything is done in slow movements, because a sudden change can cause shockwaves that’ll roll the plane.

Hey there, BrightSiders! What was the most unforgettable flight you’ve ever had?
to Canada it was wow 😀😁😁
To South-Africa with Lufthansa from Munich last summer.
you will be surprised if I tell you
I don't know
My favorite was the plane to turkey :)
As a student pilot i like how this video gives lot of insights about what actually happens. Informative .
From what I gather the planes are barely flying and every little thing can cause them to fall apart or fall down. Even though by statistics planes are safe, the video has made me worry. And in vain, since almost all of the catastrophes happen during taking off and landing, not high in the skies.
Stranger Happened that’s why they are trained and know exactly what they’re doing, it’s nothing to worry about

A group of Engineering professors were invited to fly in a plane. Right after they were comfortably seated, they were informed the plane was built by their students.
All but one got off their seats and headed frantically to the exits in maniacal panic.
The one lone professor that stayed put, calmly in his seat, was asked: "Why did you stay put?"
"I have plenty of confidence in my students. Knowing them, I for a fact can assure you this plane will never even start."

Yeah... Learned about the Coffin Corner. During my 7 years at the airport, I've never heard the British Airways and Air Canada pilots never mention that at all. Not even in their little meetings. I love flying, and always wanted to be a pilot. I have a real respect for every pilot out there.
As aircraft engineering student, that literally explained 99% of my 3 years worth of aerodynamics module!!
I was studying about the coffin corner today for my atpl exam.

When he said “I wish someone would decrease my density” I felt that
Wait what ????
Actually I think you want the opposite the more dense you are the less volume for the same weight
Oh is it then ?

This is a great explanation of several key aspects of flying, much batter than I was expecting.

We mostly fly around .80 Mach in newer airliners like the 767 for economy. Some of the older jets were a bit faster. The 727-100 could go .90 Mach but it burned a lot of extra fuel to do it. We can't go much faster than .82 Mach in the 767 because it puts us uncomfortably close to our maximum speed.
Nice BRIGHT SIDE keep it up love your channel btw❤️

I see that the guys at Bright Side understood absolutely none of the physics discussed in the video they ripped off.

Also the reason why you can’t fly so high is because the pressure is stronger as you go further away from land and if u go too high your brain will explode that’s why we have headaches when we take off

On a Garuda flight to Jakarta from Bali, the aircraft stalled on its ascent. I noticed that the constant "roar" of the engines was absent (an eerie silence) then the plane went into what I assumed was a dive. After some time, the engines were restarted but not before I thought we were all doomed. On return to Bali, my friend sitting next to me asked "Is this Jakarta?" He had slept through it all. At no time were we given an explanation.

Has anyone thought of mounting & testing RamJet or SCRAMJet engines on a airliner (except for the Concord which was failure from day 1)? After working in the aircraft engine side of aerospace I would think the engineers would have thought about aircraft & engine design since it still takes 8 hours to land in Europe & about 12 hours to land in Japan just like 20 years ago. As more & more air frame components are being made from composites, the air frames are stronger then ever & should be able to with stand the stresses of high altitude & faster flight times.

I’m terrified of flying. Utterly terrified, but this actually made me feel a lot more comfortable knowing just how many safety considerations are taken that you wouldn’t even think about. And that if things go wrong there’s generally plenty of time to fix things.
Just going through something step by step can really make you feel a lot more comfortable 😅
There would be plenty of time to fix things if Pilot stops playing chess and in most of cases they don't stop playing chess.
Awesome video

It was a future plane of the past😕
It did actually have sonic booms but this was normaly over the water as not to scare the residents below and yes I’m not speaking lies the amount of documents I watch I know my thing here and there but trust me I ain’t to Concorde specialist lol 🙂 meaning they reached Mach 2 once over the ocean and it had delta wings so less drag
It's specially designed to go in that speed.. here design matters
