    Having met this lady and not knowing anything about her I was struck by how down to earth and modest she was. What I read after left me awe inspired. I remembered the news footage and the clips I’d seen ! ….
    What an inspiration ! She is now an MP for the Lib Dems and I’d already like to see her as our next Deputy Prime Minister. It would be one of the things this country needs. A person in power who can inspire people.

    Actually when we here in my Clinic/Studio Wu-Qi Qigong think of this remarkable & engaging young woman we run up our banners of admiration, appreciation & awe. Her mindboggling accomplishments cause all my Coaches & I to stand & salute her. She alone has inspired us to actively seek effective means to include environmental awareness in our current & soon to be revised business plans. Thank you, dear Miss Savage. God speed in all your inspiring work.

    maybe one of the most important lessons of any TED-Talk... To be happy, you don't need to own the right things, you need to do the right things.

    @De4sher Yes. Our form, the hairless ape, will inevitably change, and so will our way of life.
    What I want to do is make sure that our descendants don't die off because of what we're doing now.
    Nothing is special about us objectively. Subjectively, our novelty, paintings, songs, and our ability to launch the space shuttle, instill awe, no? I can't help but feel these things should be explored as much as possible. Our descendants are the only ones who will be able to do this for quite a while.

    @florencelovme i don't disagree with your statement, but telling people to stop breading is not possible. However! Solid statistics show that increasing lifestyle quality, insulation from disease and education lower breeding tendencies.
    Birthrate Statistics (2008 estimate):
    Canada | 335,216/year
    Nigeria | 5.79 Million/year
    Other things to consider infant mortality, local customs (males as heirs), human density and life expectancy:
    Canada = 81.2 years, Nigeria= 46.9 years

    @De4sher of course evolution will still work and will always allow new species to adapt to the changing climate. The issue is saving the human species, which nature obviously has no inclination to preserve.

    THe "bound to suffer" part, in my opinion comes after we truly deplete oil. Then, we won't be able to feed as many people, therefore a huge famine will follow.
    I don't know if that can be prevented, regardless of how many investments in sustainable agriculture we make. We may be too many already.
    And as things are going, we seem literally unable to change our lifestyle on our own, so a lot of us will get slaughtered by famine and disease after the oil ends.

  • @kkrizzz

    @iainlm good for you, your life is complete....

  • @Ipoonthecasbah
    @Ipoonthecasbah 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @De4sher True, we don't have an alternative that can support this lifestyle.
    I don't see why it automatically follows that humans are bound to suffer. Couldn't we use our resourcefulness and adaptability to change our lifestyle now, before shit hits the fan? Is it only possible for this to occur after we destroy our ability to even survive reliably?
    IMO, worrying about plastics in the ocean is dumb, but other things ("green" research, industry regulation, mining/drilling) may not be.

  • @blee3ee
    @blee3ee 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Imagine the sun burn damage...

  • @De4sher
    @De4sher 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Ipoonthecasbah
    The oil is ending, and we don't really have an alternative energy source.
    At some point, our ancestors are bound to suffer greatly. The human ability most tested then, will be adaptability
    I trust human resourcefulness, but regardless, our way of life will die out within the next 100 years..
    I think therefore that worrying about it, and about plastics in the ocean, is pointless and silly... that is, if we can't find some energy source comparable with oil

    I hate to be a wet blanket, but I feel it more wise and commendable for those who thirst for adventure to build things that benefit humanity. Rowing a boat? And the end of it you've got memories and a story, maybe some pictures, but that's about it. Might as well build a castle that looks like Hogwarts out of toothpicks. meh

    interesting story. i could do without the environmental preaching. these enviro nazis all hate oil...yet extracting energy from oil was one of the single greatest advances in human history. without the energy we get from oil there is little chance of her glorious earth supporting 7 billion people or of producing the products that made her adventures possible.
    and one other note. i happen to be reading her book about the pacific voyage. she gave up her earlier life as she didn't like being dependent upon others (i.e., her husband) and wanted to a more self-sufficient life. so what does she do? She spends the next couple of years sponging off others (friends and sponsors) to support her new "independent" life.

  • @De4sher

    @Ipoonthecasbah
    if by human species you mean a species of apes which lacks body hair and communicates through language, then tough luck... it's gonna change anyway.
    if you mean our culture and way of life, then that's obviously gonna change, the way it always did.
    if you want to save yourself, i don't think you're in great danger anyway.
    is there any reason to worry about?
    is there anything to care about regarding us apes? i don't see anything that special.
    ;)

    If I wanted information about rowing a boat, i'd go to her. I listen to the scientists for environmental data.
    Same problem I have with jesus: you don't just sacrifice yourself and then claim you're a big authority on whatever field you chose.
    You want authority? do some research!
    You want to help? Help!
    Rowing a boat is neither.
    It's rest and relaxation and everyone could do it.
    She may be brave, intelligent and inspiring, however this is not relevant to environmental issues.
