My mind feels expanded-- like a great ted talk should do! A depth of intelligence and culture in marine mammals that I didn't fully appreciate, and a form of pollution I wasn't aware of (at least not the full impact of it). I didn't know that I could possibly think any higher of these creatures, but now I do.
Oh my god, if sound can travel like that throughout the ocean, just imagine all the noise the ships are making and the effect they're having on the marine inhabitants.
It was nice to hear of an industry that is actually attempting to not damage the environment. Conservation is not always a costly prospect, even saving money in some cases.
It would be cool if you used the low freq. signature to say "Here's a message" and once you swim towards it after a while you get to hear the rest of it
Are you kidding me? A presentation 100% about audio and his presentation was 100% visual until halfway through. TED needs an advisor for guys like this. You may feel strongly about your subject, but are you giving it the best shot? TED can change the world, but it wouldn't hurt to ask how these presentations could be improved. Come to think of it, that's good advice for schools.
They're intelligent animals who have empathy and intelligence just like we do, and it's been suggested that they feel more intensely than we do and it's utterly inhumane not to give them the respect they deserve to exist as living beings. If we didn't, it would be cruel. And we're so obsessed with finding intelligent life besides our own species and here in our own backyard, we have whales. Why shouldn't we be protective or intrigued?
Note: Dolphins converging their whistles to their new friend's is something human beings do - we all converge to the language, body language, accent, etc., that our new friends possess.
9:30 freaked me out for half a second. Where's that coming from?? WHAT KIND OF DEMON IS MAKING THAT SOUND OUTSIDE MY WINDOW. Oh wait, it's from the video.
I know I'm three years late- but let me answer like this. The world evolved - or was created, whatever your opinion- to the way that it is for a reason. Every species that lives on Earth today has a reason to be here. Let me give you one great example that's happening today - Honey Bee's are becoming endangered. With fewer honey bees, even if we may consider them pests, there will be fewer creatures that pollinate flowers (and no bee's to make honey). (Continued)
Higher temps don't mean everything dies necessarily, the cretaceous era was much hotter then now and not only was life abundant it was also much larger in scale(dinosaurs). The problem you're talking about is the insecurity caused by a lack of biodiversity. Sure humans are making the world less biodiverse but my point is whales are low down on the list of critical "ecosystem services". Many other species that get no attention from people are much more important ecologically to us.
@baronmorris I phrased my comment as a question, to be more informed. I'm not a cretin if I'm just trying to find a reason. A cretin would be someone who is fine with it, I'm not.
Why do we love whales so much? I do agree on saving whales if it saves fuel and resources, but what is it about whales that makes us so protective of them. They surely won't benefit our future survival if they are around, all they can be used for is food, and they are no where near the most efficient way to produce food. I do understand if we can use their biology scientifically, but we can get samples and store the samples for longer then the length of the species survival.

the moving of the shipping lanes made me happy. it's good to hear some good new's at the end of a talk.
love the add at the end.

empathy. respect. humility. kindness.
peace. ;-)
GO MAERSK :) excellently informative and positive talk!
wow, one of my favorite ted talks
@hcortens I agree, what I meant was outside of TED there are many that don't.

Excellent vid
He's my project supervisor for next year - hopefully on similar research :D
nice talk, his sound effect appealed to me too

@Flyborg Well, imagine they were hovering animals and would cruise around cities every once in a while, peering through your window...

My dad worked with the IMO. Oil companies aren't pure evil.

actually many animals copy sounds.
ocean mammals and birds mostly but search youtube for talking dogs and cats, there are plenty videos of that.

@chiwiitube :) Nope, he's not American like me. He's Canadian, like you.
It seems to me that we as a species will always struggle against ourselves to fix our wrong doings to other species and our planet. I hope I'm wrong.
Whistles.
I feel horrible that I'm about to say this but this guy sounds like a stereotypical know-it-all scientist from South Park XD
So this guy studies dolphin sounds and has no recordings of them?
@mecaecco Yeah, now that I know that, I see why people want to keep them. I do to.
These are very sensitive creatures.
We humans have been very stupit about our nature and we are fucked now...
wouldn't it be funny if the dolphins are imitating us to make fun of us?
@ScienceIsKnowledge you just got trolled....

@bfboobie I wouldn't consider it common sense...I would consider it general knowledge.
@pdblouin33 You're an american right? :p
@ScienceIsKnowledge : are you eight? :oP LoL ;o)
@apocaRUFF
