Sounds like the rod bearing is shot. That happens on the CR500s as well. The little caged roller bearing where the piston pin and the rod meet... when it's time to do a top-end the cage roller bearing sometimes just decides to crap out and it will make that ticking and rattling noise. But a side note, it could just be a bunch of random loose nuts and bolts too. them things shake like Jack hammers ya know?
And as far as people using the stock pipe I've seen it before people do the craziest stuff. Honestly really wouldn't surprise me. Thankfully it's a 2 stroke and they're not that reactive to pipe changes a lot of people think you need to do crazy jetting changes with a new pipe and you don't. At least not for me. I have an FMF gnarly on my CR250 I left the jetting alone and my plug is still a chocolatey Brown. And that's with the stock jetting. I'm not saying the pipe doesn't change the characteristic of the power because it does my bike clearly has more low-end then it did before but it's also sacrificing top end to get it. but still not sacrificing a lot at all. It probably will drastically change the power curve but not really drastically change the jetting. That's all I'm saying I can only go by what FMF recommended to me and they literally recommended me my stock jetting. But then again I do live at sea level and maybe that has a factor as well. I imagine when you live at or near sea level the jetting probably doesn't fluctuate all that often so my statement is definitely open for criticism but this is just what I have discovered on my own and from other mechanics near me. I do all my own work and I can only speak for myself at the end of the day.

Hes confused with the 500 quadzilla. That was the banshee killer. The 250 wouldnt stand a chance.
Stock for stock the lt250r motor makes more power and will indeed beat a banshee like i said stock vs stock........................
oh and it is the lt500r that was called the banshee killer and the lt250 88-92 power valve motor is the one i'm talking about not the early 85-86....
I had an 1987lt250r . My friend had a 1994 banshee, it was piped. My quadracer was piped, reeds, pwk carb. First 4 gears the quadracer would eat the banshee.. after that the banshee would pull on past me and keep walking away. But in a short drag race I always won, the suzuki was also much better in the woods, or anyway where low end power counted.
I think it needs a new crank and new top end (piston rings/rehone cylinder)

It's funny how all of the "experts" come crawling out of the wood work to tell you what you need to do, and how you need to do it on all of your videos.. It has to be a bit annoying sometimes!!
Have fun guys, looks like a cool project quad.. Learning comes with time and experience. If these experts have all of the answers, and think they can do better, then they should make their own channel..

Sounds like the conrod might have a bit of up and down play. It's gonna shit itself very soon so I would split the cases and change it now before it ruins the whole engine

Hey I entered in your bike of the month last month with my 87 lt250r, just a few things, I highly doubt that's actually a 300cc big bore given the condition of the rest of the quad and also the fact it still has a stock carb and then the fact that it's still on a stock pipe and silencer, I dont think somebody would spend money on a big bore and not upgrade the exhaust when used fmfs are available for 100-150 bucks all the time, also if it really was a big bore it would most likely be a trinity 295. Take the top end apart I'd like to if it really is, you should probably do the top end because that's definitely piston slap your hearing, normally on a good motor you just here a whooshing from the balance shaft. Your rear shock is also blown. It probably needs a arm bearings given the condition of the a arms and probably rear linkage and swingarm bearings.
I should add on here as well doing a big bore isnt easy on these, on a stock cylinder you can get up to a 69.7mm piston if I remember right but then your only at 265 cc, getting an actually big bore done will put you well over 1000 bucks, you need to remove the old sleeve machine the cylinder, install the new sleeve, machine the cases to accept the larger sleeve, then you've have to port the new sleeve to the desired specs for the application, you'll need either a piston from something else like a trx big bore that has the correct dimensions or get a custom wossner piston made, on top of that already you need to remachine the head to match the squish to the larger piston and last youd need to order custom gaskets from cometic. Its alot of work and money to pull off on one these quads. I'll be doing one on mine but be a 296-318cc if I stay stock stroke.
A Big bore with a stock pipe and silencer ? She sounded pretty noisy in the top end. It's nice looking for sure.

Man $1200 hard finding deals like that today. Love the LT 250r underestimated by many people idk why. Lite powerful fast machine i had a 85 and 86 was clocked doing 100mph down the road. Had fully built race engine geared up but still impressive.

The first year for the lt250r was 1985 it was the first high performance 2 stroke racing atv then in 86 Honda built to this day the best racing atv the mighty trx250r those old lt250s are garbage good luck with it best move it down the road man

First off if hes buying a quad for a grand it will most likely need work two that bike ain't worth 1000 maybe 800 or less

Noisy engine DOES not mean it needs a piston I dont kno where your getting that, as many bikes you have owned you kno good n well that it needs the cases split and new rod bearings and then new piston and rings

The bolt that mounts the top end to the frame is straight missing! Could have alot to do with it sounded bad in the topend
The tic over is high because the crankshaft bearings are probably the original ones , it's a shed!🤷🏼♂️

I still love that my blaster (banshee’s lil brother) can keep up with my brothers quad racer and his yfz 450 on the road. And whip his ass in the tight trails or in a sand/gravel pit. Put you might wanna try to get your hands on a tecate 4. My dad had a tecate 3 and a empty tecate 4 frame so he motor swapped them and the tecate 3 was the fastest between, 250r, and the tri-z. And he eats 500s and 350s
No way your blaster is beating any of those quads in any situation. I like blasters for what they are but still
@@lafountainmountain3244 I have a 3mill airsal set up. My motor makes more than those 250s. And I have yfz a arms and shocks and a rear elka. It's as wide as a yfz with 2+ a arms. It's a nasty woods quad

I had a quad racer that would smoke a STOCK banshee. It was modified of course. Now a modified Banshee , would beat me in a drag race but not necessarily on the track.
Hahaha this is funny my brother and his friend they have ltr250 big bore, and a 521 cub banshee and the quad racer wins every time

I just bought a stock banshee with Toomey pipes and I think I need to rejet it because sometimes it bogs or it has a hard time cutting on. I usually stand the bike on it’s two back wheels until the carburetor leaks out and it kicks over on the first kick every time. I just don’t know what jets to put it the carburetor. I stayed in Columbia Sc, density altitude is between 2800-2200 ft and the temperature is between 90-80 degrees. Oh yeah I also clean the carburetor and it is still bogging and hard start. Do you have any idea on what I should do?
@@bronxnm if you can tell me the jet size I can give an ideal on what area you need to be in. But with what you said I would think a 27.5or30 pilot jet and maybe between a 270&290 main jet. But I can say for sure. Do you still have the TORS on mine was really boggy when I bought it the first thing I did was get rid of the TORS and all was good. Hope this helps if you have anymore qeustion just ask good luck
Main jet is 290
Pilot jet is 25
Float needle was on the 3rd groove, but I changed it to the 4th groove to have it tune for the k&n filter and the t5 pipe. I also found out that the left carburetor float wasn’t at its normal spec so I bent the tab to get it to 21mm. My gas and oil ratio is 32:1 using red line two stroke racing oil. Oh yea the TORS is disconnected too
@@bronxnm I would try a 280 and I would think 25 would be to lean I would try a 27.5 and bring it back to the 3rd groove on the needle, adjust the idle screw all the way out make slide drop all the way then adjust idle screw in until you feel the slides move and then once they start moving go 2.5 turns in then adjust the slides to the center of the glass eyes up top. Then turn the air/fuel screws all the way in and then turn 1.5 turns out and then start it and you should be able to fine tune from there. There is some good video on how to synchronize carbs on

85-92 the quadracer was made.
Owned a 85 and 86 my 86 was ported pipes head milled geared go 100mph.
That one u found is a deal but have to get a good pipe for it the stock is very restrictive.

There was a KX 500 for sale in Dubuque for quite some time this past summer down near the courthouse.
loading it is the hard part, unloading all you gotta do is push it out, it has suspension for a reason. but its nice to be careful with them sometimes

Ouch has some serious top end rattle pull that too and check it may just need rings
You have the much start lever too far forward on your foot, especially for kicking an old quad over. If it kicks back hard you're breaking your ankle! The lever should be more towards the back of the arch of your foot, so if it does kick back it'll put all that energy into your whole leg instead of just your ankle.
Was new plastics at some point before someone cut the front fenders off

86 ATC 250r or CR500. Or maico 500! I’m always watching
I have found that people who lie or dont know about the year also lie about the bore size. Not saying this is the case here but double check before you order a top end kit. I have made that mistake and now have a piston in my shop that I dont fit any bikes that I own.

Hey just a heads up, i bought a yamaha blaster about a year ago and was told it leaked oil out of the shifter seal. Turns out, I took the stator cover off, and there was a fairly large hole in the crankcase right behind the front sprocket. I had to get it welded shut.
Definitely not a Banshee killer, even on it’s best day.
Good deal Joe. I guess it's just people in Wisconsin that don't fix all the problems on bike and quads before they sell them. It's to your benefit but it would be nice to buy something you didn't have to work on.

I had a 92 and it would pull the wheels off the ground all the way to 4th gear when i shifted it.also too if you want to go to 4 lug hubs in the back,the ltz400 ones will fit on there.

The Suzuki 250 isnt a quadzilla or a banshee killer just a pile of shit. Everyone Ive known said nothing but problems with those dam things. Stick with the 85-86 250r atc or trx250 or the banshee. And that noise isnt good. Prlly doesnt have big bore kit either. Dont buy wheelers cause they have new plastics and look nice. U can do that and it's cheaper than motor work
