Rest in peace, Gerd. You were the greatest and most decisive goalscorer in football history and that's not debatable.

Honestly I don't even think this video does gerd muller justice. It just repeats the same line about how he was just a goalscorer, but he was much much more than just a goalscorer.
Muller is definitely one of the most underrated and demonized players of all time.
He should easily have the best first touch in the penalty box of all time, really good with his back against the goal as well. He could literally get past 2-3 players in the box in like half a second and then take a damn quick strong shot with good accuracy with either foot, something I don't think anyone else in the history of the sport could do. With his back to the goal ability and his high football IQ he was a top class pivot, and he also heavily participated in linkup play and playmaking. His headers were also crazy good for someone of his size, should be one of the top 10 headers of all time, maybe even top 5.
Yes, he was arguably the best poacher of all time, but he was also much much much more than 'just a poacher'
In terms of peak ability I think he's right below the pele maradona messi and brazilian ronaldo. His only 'weakness' was that he didn't have much ability to bring the ball forward and make proper dribbling runs from deep and because of his height you couldn't really just boot the ball forward and expect him to get the ball while hustling with defenders. But even then the gap between him and those four in terms of peak ability is pretty small imo.
All things considered I think he's definitely at the very least a top 4 player of all time, maybe even 2nd best after pele. He didn't just score lots of goals, he scored lots of really important goals as well. 14 goals in 13 games at the world cup, including two goals at the 1970 WC semis, the crucial goal against poland to get germany to the WC finals in 1974 and ofc the winning goal against holland to win the 1974 WC. Besides that he also scored 4 goals in the 1972 euros semis and finals.
And that's not even mentioning his insane scoring stats and his record breaking year of 85 goals. Messi broke the record in 2012 but muller still had a far better goal per game ratio

in terms of peak ability, he's also below cruyff, romario, george best, baggio etc who were all technically skilled ballers. gerd muller was arguably the greatest goalscorer ever, but didn't have dribbling ability and technical ability like the others mentioned

In my opinion one of the greatest centre forwards in history along with Romário, brazilian Ronaldo and Marco Van Basten

Quoting myself on another Gerd Muller video: "As well as being an amazing player for scoring goals with crazy regularity, I believe he is the only person to have scored in a World Cup final, a European Championship final and a European Cup final. Someone correct that if it is wrong (the closest I found was Zidane, who also won them all but didn't score in the Euro 2000 final)", that comment was made 8 months ago and I'm still pretty sure there isn't anyone else. I believe he is also the only person with more than 50 caps who has scored more international goals than he has played international games.

      You should be correct.
I' m glad you mentioned this!
Müller also has the best goal/game ratio in UCL matches of all players ever (34 goals in 35 appearaces). This is even better than the stats of di Stéfano or Puskas. Not even to mention CR7 or Messi.
In german cup, Müller scored unbelievable 1.25 goals per game. In contrast, Messi for example has a goal-ratio of sth. about 0.7 goals/game in copa del rey.
Mülker also managed to score a total of 14 wc-goals in only 10 or so games. The only person that comes to my mind to haver a better ratio in wc games is Juste Fontaine .

Gerd Müller was the best scorer of all time and a superb Human. If he had taken the offer of Barcelona, his international notice would have been much bigger. He said he can`t eat more then 1 Schnitzel a day and stayed in Munich. Bayern Munich wouldn t be where they are now. So sad to see him sick and leave the world this way.
Recently no Team would be able to pay what he was really worth. GOAT.... Even Messi says so.....

11:57 I don't think the ball bounced off Muller's foot. The ball was hit hard and low into the penalty area with Muller running in at full pace. Muller couldn't take the ball in his stride and it was at too awkard an angle to hit first time. So he did the unexpected, knocked the ball a step behind himself with the Dutch defenders racing in on goal and gave himself the space to turn and shoot.

Admittedly I could have chosen my words better, I meant that as in he put the ball in that direction, but yeah the way I worded it makes it sound like a Lukaku touch…

Precisely. The commentary on this goal is I think the only error in an otherwise excellent narrative. Muller meant to do exactly what the video shows he did to score this goal, and it was just another of his masterpieces. What a scoring technician! Only the great Jimmy Greaves comes close.

RIP Gerd, very underrated and excellent goalscorer. Jimmy Greaves was also underrated in England and was dropped despite scoring prolifically at club level. Unique strikers.

Although he lived in an era when transfers abroad were rare, it would have been amazing to see 'der bomber' playing in another league. He would have lit up the English or Spanish leagues
