  • Sometimes, there's no right, there is no wrong. But you have to choose anyway. What do you do?

You have no idea how much this video calmed me down. Thank you.

When I had a diabetic cat (rest in peace, Lucky) the helpful folks on the feline diabetes message board used to say "ECID", shorthand for "Each Cat is Different". This video is a reasonable approach to a complicated assortment of health issues, and I like the focus on the ultimate real answer for treatment, which is "whatever works for the cat".

Thank you, for taking the time to explain, how to let your cat help you decide. I liked your answer. Watch how your cat is responding to the medication. and if there's improvement, then use it.

Agreed, steroids may pose a danger but so does not eating or drinking.

Thank you for the video. And the information. My kitten is a year old and I struggle to figure out why the veterinarian put her on dexamethasone. It's the only thing that's been keeping her alive. She has upper respiratory problems and he treated her for what has been more than 3 months with dexamethasone and antibiotics. Every single time the runs out she gets sick again. It's almost like she's dependent on dexamethasone. And now it's like it's not really effective anymore. I'm starting to taper her off now, but her symptoms are getting much much worse. She has hair loss and I don't think she's going to make it.

Your cat by definition is one big immunity organism. Steroids prevents your cats immune response to a vast array of environmental threats. Do not use, unless you are prepared to lose your pet.

What do you suggest for cats where they have severe asthma and inhalers don't help? What if the cat doesn't accept inhaler, and ends up in the ER unable to breath whem without meds? Im at a loss. My cat has not fully accepted the inhaler and is on a now daily prednisolone 2.5mg that has made him act very unwell 2 times at higher doses, and he has now put on several pounds. Its hard. Would you rather get the time you can, sacrificing their future organs and wellness for like 8, years of a good life, then possibly downhill? Ive seen so many ppl say steroids gave their cats diabetes or killed them at loike 8yrs old to kidney failure. It kills me every day i have to give it to him, but please tell me, what the f do u suggest!?? "Do not use unless " like for many people, their cats would DIE far far sooner without them.

@hales I see you are frustrated as I am. I wish I could take my cat of steroids, but when I do, she gets very itchy. I've tried to do it halfway between vet's and my decision, mono protein diet and try to lower the dose of prednisone, but it simply doesn't work. Last night she has groomed herself and hissed for good two hours and after 2,5 mg she finally calmed down. I gave her another half in the morning and she ate only hypoallergenic food and she's a different cat after last night, I swear. Steroids suck, but they help. I will ask my vet if we can continue with this higher dose while she's on hypoallergenic and later lower the dose after another blood tests. I wish my cat was healed from fish oil and meat diet, but it simply doesn't work for her. If she eats only a bit of chicken kibbles, she's off barbering herself. We're all going nuts.

@@jas2429 that's so rough. I wish i had advice, but my cat unfortunately just had asthma. Its really bad , snd hes only 2 years old. Most cats in my groups seem to get symptoms later in life, but he's always been a noisy breather and occasional cough. I got him at 3 weeks with his sister.
It has culminated this past year and he had got pneumonia 2x, from untreated asthma and shows up when he starts having attacks throughout the day, every few minutes.
Initially my cats fur began to fall out, he is gray and has a beautiful smooth, shiny coat, and it looked dull and dry and patchy/uneven and like several shades lighter. Falling out in hand fulls. Sleeping all day, and restless at night, kind of neurotic acting just very flustered seeming over nothing.
He was peckish and exhausted which isnt notmal for pred. That was his first week and a half of the initial high dose snd it was devestating seeing my youngest suffer so much. I just wamt him to have good days but i have to find the perfect mix of meds/dose that works and the inhaler is the healthier alternative to longterm pred, but that requires training your cat to breath 10+ breathes into a mask against their face every day. He isnt keen on it but we are working still. I dont want to lose my cat at 8years old or lrss to kidney failure or diabetes. I hope we can get him off it. We were at 2.5 every other day, now up to daily becaude his symptoms returned. It sucks. I hope we can get it figured out

@@hales6547 I'm very sorry you're going through this. I feel like the therapy works three days for my cat and then everything slowly goes back to what we're trying to cure. I have never ever been so frustrated... The only good part is her strange fattening on the base of her tail finally went away. But, months on prednisone... I feel like I will maybe manage to cure her strange dermatitis, but I will make her sick on other organs. Huh... I sincerely hope your cat will be better. 🙏 Wish you the same luck as I wish it for my cat and myself.

@@jas2429 my kitty has finally taken to inhalers. Have those helped your kit? It's been a rough time with training and I can't afford to buy from the US so must be timed proper and ordered from Canada, but after like 3 months of work, he now takes very well to his inhaler. Still doesn't do very many breathes at kncs but he takes in his dose with lots of treats. Finally, after like 5 months of pred we will work towards a taper off
