To keep your salt from clumping up put 5-6 dry pinto beans in your container and they will keep the salt from sticking together. My mother taught us to do that when we were little I’m 65 now and it’s always worked for me . Just leave them in the container.
I grew up with pinto and navy beans. Pinto with Ham or Hamburger meat and white cornbread. Navy always with Ham and yellow cornbread. Sometimes we had either with biscuits instead of cornbread. After school Mom would make mashed pinto bean sandwiches with mustard. I still incorporate these meals with some additions now. I am 70.
Fixed pinto beans for our 4 th of July Bar B Q. I use a wonderful recipe from Texas that has been in the family over 50 years. It’s such a family favorite that it is asked for every time we Bar B Q!
I love Mexican food so have really enjoyed this video. I use chicken broth when cooking many dishes. My husband, who passed away almost 3 months ago, had a very sensitive digestive system, so I found cooking with chicken broth helped. I don’t cook much these days, but I am going to definitely make the pinto bean salad.
We are sorry to hear about your husband. Lets us know how the pinto bean salad works out for you. Thanks you for taking the time to watch our video. Jim
I can’t stress enough the use of an instant pot (or similar pressure cooker) to cook raw beans. Just add dry beans, water or broth 2” over the top of beans, spices and flavorings, cook 90 min high pressure. Perfect soft beans. Add frozen meat on top for a one pot meal. Saves fuel because the pot is in cruise mode using little energy most of the time.
Beans are a staple in our home. Refried is the every day norm. They are so versatile. Try the tostada (crispy tortilla) crunched up on top of the Aztec chicken soup. It’s makes for the perfect bite.
I have home canned and store bought pinto beans, as well as refried (store) and creamed(store that I use in chili). I don't know why I never thought to make my own refried beans! I now have another backup! The salad looks delicious! I would have never thought of cold pinto beans! Sounds perfect for these hot days. And you can't go wrong with beans and ham! Except you forgot the cornbread!😊😋 Thanks for sharing!
I can seasoned beans , both black and pinto. When I need some “Mexican beans” I get one of those. Super quick! The bean salad looks wonderful!!! I have a 10 # bag waiting to be taken care of, thank you!❤️ Be Blessed❤
My husband and I have never ever been a fan of any beans but baked. But since I have decided to learn pressure canning this January, we are changing our minds a bit. Looking forward to watching all your bean videos
My dad was the youngest of ten, nine surviving. They are all gone now. My grandma did a lot of canning, so did my mom. Great to be reminded of bean versatility.
All the mexicans that I grew up with put bacon grease in the bottom of the pan before they put the mashed beans back in. Hence the name reFRIED beans. For this reason, I think the beans cooked with ham hock would be acceptable to use for refried beans.
Great video! I really enjoy pinto beans. My mom not only soaked the beans (she allowed us littles to sit at the table and sort them out removing the stones and bad beans by the age of 4 & 5), but she threw in a carrot to help remove the gas even more, then once cooked threw the carrot out. Since learning to can, I’ve returned to cooking pinto beans. Oh my, these are the best ones I’ve ever tasted in 6 decades. I guess I’ll need a bigger canner, mine won’t hold many jars. 😂
This is wonderful. It is because of your advice Pam that I have canned pinto's and other varieties. I was having canned beans that smelled bad so you recommended that I use distilled water. That worked. Thank you for that! Now I have new recipes to try. You two are a blessing to this community!
Pinto beans with hammock and that pot liqueur over a slice of good cornbread is a complete meal down here where I live and over in Georgia, Tennessee, etc.... all 9ver the South lol
I will make the pinto refried beans. made the refried beans today. delicious, it made 16 bean beef and cheese enchiladas with mexican green chili enchilada sauce I got here at our local mexicanstore. tha k you
All of these recipes are new to me, so I plan to try all of them. Grew up eating lots of pinto beans, and for most of my 20's and 30's did not eat them very often. I love them now and eat them quite often. Thanks for sharing!
I make a taco salad with beans. Lettuce or salad mix, tomatoes, 1 drained can of Ranch style beans, Fritos and Catalina Dressing. The measurements of the chips and dressing are up to you. It’s not a healthy recipe but it’s filling.
Will have try adding oregono when I make refied beans. I don't buy Chicken broth to often. I use Knorrs Chicken Boullion to my beans. Will need to try the Bean salad. Looks good. I have missed some of the Bean videos. Need to catch up on them. Enjoying these market video. Thank you!
Many meals I make involve burger and beans. Opening a pint of beans to add to burger and whatever else is needed for the dish seems to always end up with leftovers--usually not enough for a meal So--I've started canning Beef 'n Beans. 1/3 to 1/2 cup of cooked burger (depending on how much burger I have), then fill a pint 3/4 full of soaked beans. Whatever spices and herbs suit my fancy of the moment, water to the correct headspace, then pressure for 75 minutes. This worked out so well that I have ventured out further into beanville. Any white beans with ground pork or sausage, cannelini beans with turkey, Anasazi or mayacoba with chicken, red beans with beef or venison...the combinations are endless. The best thing is that, with the addition of the vegetable part of the recipe, or the making of the pint into 'refried', or patties, there are no leftover dibs and dabs. I actually do like some leftovers--usually planned-overs--but I got tired of the lab in my fridge. My anti-virals don't need to include homegrown 'I wonder what that was' drugs, thank you very much! A few days ago, I canned 17 pints of Beef 'n Beans, half with the addition of smoked paprika. The protein for 17 meals, on the shelf, easy-peasy, and, since the burger was on sale, relatively cheap. Love, love beans!!
Looking forward to making the salad. Looks refreshing and cool. I keep staring at my tomatoes encouraging them to hurry and ripen! Today may be the day since it is 109 degrees right now. Thank you for sharing.
Great video. All the recipes look fantastic. I love authentic restaurant type refried beans. Bean really can be one of the great survival foods and can be made delicious so easily.
Love both recipes. I would not think of not soaking beans overnight! Only thing you do different is the chicken broth. I'm definitely trying that next week! White balsamic vinegar. I have never heard of it. Hmmm. Of course I have brown and will use that. I love the salad too! I would make that right now if I had the ingredients! Yum. Yum to everything here! I've never done refried beans from scratch like this, but can't wait to. My landlady is Mexican, so can't wait to have here try them. I bet she loves them. I've eaten enough of her cooking ti know what she likes. ❤🎉
I want so desperately to incorporate more beans in my diet simply for the economic nutrition along with ease of storage. But I'm just not a huge fan of most beans. However, that salad looked phenomenal, and i will definitely try that. Thank you!!
The easiest way to make refried beans (from my Mexican MIL) is to process the beans and any extras (onions, peppers, seasonings, etc) in a blender until they’re the consistency you want but a little watery. I also withhold a bit of whole beans. Heat oil (lard or bacon fat is really yummy) in a heavy skillet. Add the beans and then cook down to the consistency you want (extra liquid evaporates).
I like/love most beans. I can't imagine life without eating beans on a regular basis. Some beans, I don't like in one form, but I do like them in another. Example: I dislike dried black eyed peas/cow peas. However, I really like them as a snap bean or a fresh shell pea/bean. If there's a bean I dislike in its most common form, I try to find another way to prepare it. Ya never know if ya don't try!
You are so patient while your food is being tested! Wow! I am looking forward to even more! Ps I got kicked off … removed from your. Posts heads up!! Pay attention!
Thank you for the wonderful variety of pinto bean dishes. I will try all of them. I was going to make refried beans yesterday, but will buy some bulk dry pinto beans and Mexican oregano and make them. I'll check out the cheese to see if I can make that from raw milk plus the Mexican market. I'm a make from scratch person so I know what's in my food!

Im trying flaked hulled barley for breakfast instead of oats. Wondered if you could do something on that before fall perhaps. Im rinsing night before and letting them dry over night and flakiing. They flake well but not sure if im prepping them, storing them or even cooking them right for a basic oatmeal or cookie? Trying to use them for the added fiber. Oats dont fill me. Oats fiber is 5gr per serving and hulled barley is 8!!! Also organic hulled barley is half the price with Azure Standard!
Ordered. I absolutely love pintos and love your channel as well. I was especially impressed with the fact that you don't double dip! Could you please make a video on this subject? I have seen cooking videos where I am gagging because they are doing this. If I make a comment expressing my disgust, I get haters attacking me. Thank you for all you do!
How do you think those refried beans would freeze for a single person? Freeze in pucks and save in a container to take our when you need one is what I was thinking.

I love the bean sandwich! Even had them at a wedding, lol.
Love the idea of beans in a summer salad. 😊
Pintos are my favorite! They are a great protein replacement.
I make my beans in the instant pot what a time saver.
Getting ready to go to bed and saw you just posted. Living in NM we eat a lot of beans. Nice to have some new recipes. Great video

Pintos with hammocks is the only way we fix them. The southern way. I’m from Tennessee and we call them soup beans lol
Beans: (especially pinto) a staple on this homestead.😊
My sister suggested an immersion blender to mash the beans and that was genius!

Thank you
You're welcome
Thanks for the recipies.
I wonder if a few grains of rice would keep your salt from clumping? I have about 5 rice grains in my salt shakers and it works perfectly.
My mouth is watering. Thank you.
I love salt cellars. I use a dessicant packet in mine to keep out moisture.
New bean recipe always sought after. Thank you. I'd pile refried beans, bean salad and cheese onto a chip. Jim could make a creative burrito .
Yes, I am always are looking for ways to making creative burritos. Jim
My mom used to add a few grains of white rice to her salt to absorb moisture. 🌷
The rice sounds interesting. Jim
Many restaurants in New England put rice in the salt shakers to keep it from clumping.
I use the rice, too. With that size container a tea ball, small w chain removed, holds the rice beautifully.
I make a taco salad with beans. Lettuce or salad mix, tomatoes, 1 drained can of Ranch style beans, Fritos and Catalina Dressing. The measurements of the chips and dressing are up to you. It’s not a healthy recipe but it’s filling.
