I was shocked when I checked the price of the DashSkin today (9/24/24) that the price is still the same as it was when I purchased mine over 4 years ago. Still shows the price to be $134.95!
I got a Dashskin for the wife's 07 Tahoe. It was so cracked you could lift large pieces up so I taped it all up before putting on the skin. Wow the thing looks brand new now.
I just replace both my rear window motors and now need to replace the front driver side switches as the mirror control and the driver window switch has gone out. Saw this and and was really surprised. My dash looks like a puzzle it's cracked so many places. Some like yours around the airbag. Talked to dealer about 2 years back, and they told me same as you mention...$1,000 bucks to replace. Now I have a fix, thanks. After this, will work on roof, rust and pitting on those trough's.
I used one of these. It's was ok for $75 but I definitely recommend lots of good silicone and pressure until it's thoroughly cured. Also, the fabric ones are cool if you go have them recovered in leather or suede.
I swear your narrative skills remind me of the Legendary Painter Bob Ross. Overall your video was informative and well detailed. Great job bro and thank you for this. I'm definitely will get mine this week.
Thank you for the background music, so many vids ads orchestrated for a 19 year old hip hop metalhead or something. Nice job on the vid and explanation. Getting ready to go out and do mine. For weights I made up a batch of 1 gal sandbags, live by the desert, sand is free. Your dash looked way better than mine, I also use gorilla tape, plus the big loose pieces I removed and used hardware cloth and epoxy to strengthen it.
I just bought one of these for our 2010 Tahoe. I got the extra silicone to seal the cracks before installing it. I think I may do what you did and get some gorilla tape for that extra hold. Next on the list is an AFM disabler/delete vecause I didn't know it at the time but, the 07 to 14 GM trucks have a AFM problem where the rollers can fail and grind up the cam
I think you will be pleased with the dash cover. Unfortunately I did have to replace my engine at about 60,000 miles. It was either pay the mechanic $2500 to tear it apart and fix it or $3500 for a rebuilt engine with 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. Had about 160,000 miles on it when I sold it with no problems out of the rebuilt engine. My 2002 Avalanche has 260,000 miles in the original engine with just some oil leak at the rear main
That's what I did for my 2004 Avalanche (my dash was totally destroyed after a wind shield installer leaned into it). I "butterfly" bandaged it in about 15 places with 1/2" strips of black Gorilla tape, then siliconed the cracks. I also broke out the grill at the front vents which was the main source of noise (little sticks ticking and creaking). When the top was siliconed on, I used balls of paper towels to wedge it into the corner, then two bath towels plus about 10 bricks to weigh it down. The color is a perfect match. It looks perfect.
We have a 2007 Tahoe. Similar issue. actually GM replaced it once in 2011 for free but it is doing the same thing again. My issue with this product is how it has a noticeable ridge on the edges by the vents. I will probably find another GM one and replace to keep the original look and make sure to use some more pads/double tape below to support it better. That is why it cracks
Thank you for the video. 2 years later. I have the same truck you have and 2 years ago I got sick of the rattling noise from the cracks in the dash. I ended up paying 800 US dollars at the dealership to change. I wish I saw your video then Did you have a problem withe evap system? A week ago I dropped a thousand to change it.
I was wondering how happy you are with this today? Im dealing with the same issue in my Dodge Ram and with so many repair options this one appears to be the best. Love to hear your thoughts on this a year later.
I was very pleased with the performance. No squeaks, color stayed good, and if you didn’t know it was on there you would not notice it. I wish I would have done it a lot sooner than I did.
It doesn’t look that bad in person but if you didn’t know that it was an overlay, you might not notice it and just think it was made that way. I can take that versus the big cracks that rattled!
I put one of these on my 2007 Tahoe and the part that goes over the airbag drives me crazy as far as looks go. Other then that, I love this dash skin. Looks 10 times better then all of the holes and cracks.
I put a full skin last year and it looks great, but because factory dash defrost is engineered for efficiency, the extra skin is just enough to affect it and defrosting the windshield doesn't work well now. I wished now that I bought the half skin as I didn't really need the full skin.
I’m curious if the dash sensor being buried a little is affected? Actually I don’t even know what that sensor does to be honest, lol. Thanks for doing this video. Every single Chevy pick up built from 2007 on has the airbag corner crack- this is an elegant solution!

Super Video Instuctions. Clear and to the piont with a couple mistakes that I will take not of such as lowering the steering wheel and dry fit prior to adhesive install. Overall, you did a fantastic job making this video. BIG THANKS!!
Exactly. A bit of topic I wanted to thank you for your service and especially service with The Tomcats. Fear the Bones, Anytime Baby! Jolly Rogers VF-84 & VF-103. ☠️
Here's the thing.. I have one of these, but what happened was the dash underneath only broke up and cracked up further, causing the dash to only rattle and strike the cover making a truly irritating rattling noise, drove me crazy. Looks good, but you can still hear the dash rattling. Just replace the dash. Cost me 250 bucks for the new dash, 300 for the installation.
Not OEM I found it used. Check around at local scrapyards I'm in Fort Worth TX, the place I found has pickup only and you have to get LUCKY, these things are rare to find, uncracked, especially in southern states where it's hotter. Good luck!
Thank you for this! We passed our 2011 Avalanche onto our son. His dash is cracked in almost the same spot. Do you know what we can do to help the back from slats from leaking?
I didn’t have much problem with leakage in mine. I think the key would be to find out where the water is getting in and concentrate on what is wrong in that area.
I have this and put it on about the same time as you did. My second one. To be honest, it still bothers me because the original was a leatherette feel and look to it. Mine creaks, but I think it might just be because of the cold. I'm thinking seriously of getting the original replacement just because of the "it's bugging me" factor.
I hear you. I hate not using OEM parts, but I couldn’t justify the money and time to replace the dash. I think this is a good solution for not much cost and time invested. I think using a liberal amount of silicone helps with not having squeaks and creaks.
Mine held up well. If I were you, I would probably get some high temperature silicone like for a wood stove or engine block to use due to the potential for the high temperatures.
Wow, such cheap material they use. They really don’t want a vehicle to last much longer than the warranty. I have the crack to the air bag but that monster hole you have by the wheel scares me that my dash could get worse. That’s crazy if you ever need to pop the front dash off you won’t be able to, because that covers it. I noticed some of my tabs that hold it down broke off anyways.
I liked your video, also the peaceful music. Please give me the supplier details, I also need a dash cover for my 2012 Hybrid Tahoe. Manuel Guayaquil, Ecuador South America
Cause gm cheaper out on the part…they claimed bankruptcy in 09… so I’m sure they were using the cheapest supplier when this body came out in 07…. All they had to do was request ea dash be a bit more thicker , but no…..the 99-06 dashes hold up better than this pos dash
Every vehicle with this same dash had this issues even after a year old. GM went downhill after the bailout. Dont even get me going on the issues with my c7.
Good question. It attaches to the existing dash. So I assume they would come off together. If not, it is silicone that holds it on so you may be able to pry it off, but you would probably have to put a new one on when you are finished.
I did not have any issues with it. I sold the avalanche to an older couple and I just talked to them a few weeks ago and they said it is doing good. Been installed for about 3 years
It was when I sold it, which was about a year after I fixed it. I think it is important to make sure your existing dash is REALLY clean prior to applying the silicone to make sure you get a good bond
My dash did rattle but I think it was from the cracked dash. When I installed the dash skin it stopped. I waited way too long to do this. It made a big difference in the appearance and stopped the rattle I had. If your rattle is from the cracked dash then this should help. Be sure to put the tape over the crack and put extra silicone around the cracked area to make sure you get a bond with the dash skin.
I got it from @DashSkin. Current price is about $160 as of March 27, 2022. Here is the link for a dash that does not have a speaker. dashskin.com/2007-2012-gm-truck-molded-abs-dash-skin-cap-cover-overlay
I apologize for the late reply. Here is the link to the website: dashskin.com/ I was shocked to see that the price is still the same as when I purchased mine over 4 years ago in 2020 at $134.95 as of today (September 24, 2024)
I think just using a carpet dash cover would work just fine. use velcro to secure it to the dash that way it can be easily removed if you need to do any work that requires the dash to be removed.
I'm currently using the carpet dash cover with velcro, I will say the cab get so hot when the vehicle sitting the velcro won't stay secure for long where the tacky part meets the dash & will cause the cover slide a lil & become un aligned, you can still here some dash noises, but I like the carpet look just fine. I use a lint roller to clean it.
I tried that and they ship it folded so it has a big crease or two in it and then of course if you do get it on you look like an Uber driver from some Middle Eastern country. The velor or cloth ones just look tacky. I got the plastic one from danskin but man what a hassle putting it in and hoping it stays there with this crappy silicone they give you.
That's way to new to already be brittle. It seems like everything is being produced as cheaply as possible and designed to last just until the warranty expires. Qoth parts marketed to be cost prohibited to replace ir repair.
They make a dashskin for 2008. Lots of videos out there showing how to repair dash cracks but the dashskin is the way to go. The other repairs don’t last long. I’ve been fixing car interiors for over 20 years
Typical I get this kit and the tube of silicone is so stiff I can't even squeeze it out so I end up getting this crap all over the place and of course it pops a hole on the side of it so I get it all over my hands and I'm using about a dozen Clorox pop-up wipes to clean this thing up trying to get it in by myself. If I had known I would have gone and bought another squeeze bottle of silicone and done it. Tells me these things have been sitting on the shelf for a long time unsold at the silicone that they throw in there it's damn near hard. Good luck trying to get a bead and all the necessary spots then when you do get it set in there it won't sit nice and snug and they give you these stupid pieces of foam to stick on the sides to hold down the end of it and along the front and of course you can't put them in there and close the door without having the window down. As luck would have it it was raining! So I'm juggling these little pieces of foam that press down on the ends between the door and the dash and trying to get the key out and of course the door locks keep popping. Then trying to find something heavy enough to hold it down everywhere without destroying the surface of the brand new cover good luck with that! These videos always make it look so easy.
You seem like a nice guy so I don’t want to be too harsh but from my perspective, I feel like you should just get a toyota Tundra or a Nissan Titan instead cuz I’ve never once heard of this problem come up in any old or new Japanese trucks 😭 but on the other hand if this is just a hobby of yours or something then by all means keep doing ur thing! Definitely makes for a very interesting and helpful video if I ever find myself with this issue :)
Not a hobby just something that I had to take care of to make my truck aesthetically pleasing again. This was an economical way to do that. I had this truck about a year or 2 when this issue popped up.
he speaks so calm. but he drives like a MANIAC ! no wonder he wanted to see if it make noises while driving. its like 12 G;s of force it may fly off and hurt this old man. please just drive like an old man and it will stay on. maybe he is an ex F 15 pilot or something poor truck you drive the hell out of this thing. please slow down pilot.
Ha! I don’t drive that way. I said in the video that it is due to speeding up the video. I baby my vehicles. My other avalanche has over 250,000 miles on it with no major repairs. I have to admit that I did try to purposefully hit some bumps in that ride to see if I could hear the new dash making any noise.
IT'S NOT JUST YOU PARKING YOUR CAR AND HOOONNNKKK LOCKING IT. IT'S EVERYONE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD INDOOR AND OUT HAVING TO HEAR IT AND BE WOKEN BY IT. PLEASE ...LOCK YOUR VEHICLE QUIETLY NO HONK. The dash cracks in the same spots on these vehicles. GMC should’ve really owned this issue.
Agreed!
What causes this? I just bought my avalanche a week ago and it has the same crack by the air bag.

How do you get this off when you need to get in there to work on something?
Good question. It attaches to the existing dash. So I assume they would come off together. If not, it is silicone that holds it on so you may be able to pry it off, but you would probably have to put a new one on when you are finished.

The sound is the cracking. I just replaced the dash.
After a year has it now turned into a bunch of rattles or is the dash nice and quiet?
Pretty much like when I installed it when I sold it.
It says in the instructions don't use alcohol
I must have missed that but I had no issues with mine
How much it coast and from were can l get it please help me
I got it from @DashSkin. Current price is about $160 as of March 27, 2022. Here is the link for a dash that does not have a speaker. dashskin.com/2007-2012-gm-truck-molded-abs-dash-skin-cap-cover-overlay
@@acountrylifestyle1137 (Thank you
Where do you order these skins from. Would like to know.
I got it from dashskin.com
🙋🏼♂️
Where can I get the silicone from?
You can order it at the same time you order the dash skin
Can you send me the link to purchase the dash skin?
I apologize for the late reply.
Here is the link to the website: dashskin.com/
I was shocked to see that the price is still the same as when I purchased mine over 4 years ago in 2020 at $134.95 as of today (September 24, 2024)
I wouldn't call covering a cracked dash "fixing it".
It may not be as good as replacing the dash, but for the money it is a good fix for a problem area
I think just using a carpet dash cover would work just fine. use velcro to secure it to the dash that way it can be easily removed if you need to do any work that requires the dash to be removed.
That is one way to remedy the situation. I wanted a more original look
Any chance of the dash skin cracking?
I don’t know about that. I sold that avalanche but it didn’t crack during the time I had it
DashSkin has a lifetime warranty against cracking and warping.
❤❤
Thanks
How is it holding up
Held up well! No problems with it.
That's way to new to already be brittle. It seems like everything is being produced as cheaply as possible and designed to last just until the warranty expires. Qoth parts marketed to be cost prohibited to replace ir repair.
Agree
Would it work on a 2008 ?
It should. Check with the manufacturer to make sure
They make a dashskin for 2008. Lots of videos out there showing how to repair dash cracks but the dashskin is the way to go. The other repairs don’t last long. I’ve been fixing car interiors for over 20 years
👌
👍
How will you replace that $15.00 Ambient Light Sensor? 😂
I didn’t replace it and I didn’t notice any problems with it.
@@acountrylifestyle1137 Mine has the dash cover and if it goes bad you have to remove the whole thing just to get to it.
Sorry that you had issues installing yours. Sounds like it snowballed on you.
What kind of silicone can you use?
My Toyota 4runner had a cracking dash that the factory recalled. So dont be a snob about car types.
Lexus had horrible issues with dashboard. Recalls. ...
RATHER HAVE A CRACKED DASH THAN A JAP MOBILE!
Yea, because Toyota/ Lexus dash panels didn't crack... they just melted (my mom had one replaced twice).
he speaks so calm. but he drives like a MANIAC ! no wonder he wanted to see if it make noises while driving. its like 12 G;s of force it may fly off and hurt this old man. please just drive like an old man and it will stay on. maybe he is an ex F 15 pilot or something poor truck you drive the hell out of this thing. please slow down pilot.
IT'S EVERYONE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
INDOOR AND OUT HAVING TO HEAR IT AND BE WOKEN BY IT.
PLEASE ...LOCK YOUR VEHICLE QUIETLY NO HONK.
HOW: PRESS LOCK AND UNLOCK ON FOB 2-4 SECONDS
THIS SHOULD TURN HONK OFF
CHECK WITH YOUR DEALER SERVICE AS SOME CARS
MIGHT BE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT.
THANK YOU.
I hear you! I live in the country as you can tell by the cornfields that I drive past. I don’t think the corn, soybeans, cows, chickens, and pigs pay it any mind. If they start complaining then I will stop.
GM dashes were cheap plastic that era.
I agree
@@acountrylifestyle1137 It was the era when GM was broke so they made vehicles as cheap as possible.
Just replacement not really fixing for less than 150
It actually did fix the rattles from the cracks
@@acountrylifestyle1137 but its not like you actually showed how to fix the crack you just replaced the part
The dash cracks in the same spots on these vehicles. GMC should’ve really owned this issue.
Agreed!
