Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could th-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.
I love the start of this video it goes from a disclaimer saying I'm a highly trained professional to the next moment in the scene in which he's talking to a bird.. Hahaha nicely done and you are a pro at what you do with all the experience that you have gathered Awesome video beautiful out there
Great vid. I want to thank you for breaking down the river and teaching us how to find fish. Definitely taught me more than anyone else. I was just wading the Potomac chasing smallies this week. Good, but still sketchy. I'm definitely going to get a PFD for next time.
The potomac has been where most of my scariest fishing mistakes have occurred. They've all been weather + kayak related.... One time at Aquia creek I legitimately was considering calling the coast guard, and I am not one to call emergency services unless I'm about to die. 3-5ft swells and a 20mph sustained head wind with gusts up to 40-60mph that day. Had to pedal over 1 mile back to the launch with the wind coming from about 1 o'clock the entire time. I felt like I was sailing the seas in an old wooden ship during a hurricane... every single swell I went over I crashed down and had a massive splash flood over me lol.
do you ever link with local viewers? I'm not far from fairfax and, like you, will take risks for fish - I took my radar 115 on the occoquan during a blizzard for crappie lol I usually find a long stick to probe in front before I step - probe around a bit because you might hit a tall boulder and an inch or two in either direction could be 10' deep ps those guppy heads... shhhh lol
Dude i’ve been subscribed to you for 4 years now and iv loved watching you i grew up without a father figure to teach me how to fish and you taught me everything i know thank you so much❤ and i’d love for you to come fish with me in mississippi
a few yrs back i was fishing the schuylkill river by manyunk and little did i know it apparently was storming like no other somewhere out western PA and while i was wading the river rose about a foot within 10mins. the undercurrent was getting so intense i almost couldnt walk back out the river.... mind you i was only about 25-30 ft from the bank. very scary!
i actually watched unfortunately as an older gentlemen tried to stand on side of the phoenixville pa "lock 60" schuylkill river dam and i guess lost his footing and fell right in to the base of the dam.... all that water rushing over the damn just kept him sucked to the bottom almost like a big washing machine that he just couldnt beat. he didnt make it. very sad. so yes i totally agree, undercurrents can be in places you'd least expect it. sometimes its not the most obvious spot that could have serious current
Dude one rod, I used to work just above that dam at Riverbend park. Big smallies above the dam, and lots of dangerous holes, not safe for wading, but I have never seen anybody wading below the dam. LOL seriously!
For me, The best way to fish those spill way dam is to use a 2.75" tube with a 1/8 oz jig head inside and cast it right against the water fall and slowly hop it.
Ive caught some big smallies where you fished today on underspin and jerkbaits. Otherwise pennyfield and Violettes lock is where i normally go for nice size smallies and snakehead in the canal side tightlines 😊
Just got back into fishing because I have a lot more free time, been having a hell of a summer at some local ponds in PG county. Would be willing to show you some of my favorite spots if you got some time!
Beautiful fish with an epic adventure. Have you thought about fishing the mid columbia river? It's stuffed with these guys. The googan squad seems to shun this area. Self guided is easy. Good people, great food, epic fishing... for bass.
I was night fishing a few years ago and knew there was a really good spot but I had to cross the river, not that bad of a plan but fresh spring melt and heavy rain made the current way stronger than normal I lost my footing and got waders full of water and a cold bath that night
My most dangerous fishing trip was offshore ocean fishing chasing tuna over night. Major storms rolled in and 20 foot waves tossing the little boat around. Thought I was going to die.
Just got done fishing the Juinata river, about a mile up stream. Its tough walking over the slimy rocks, but worth catching all the smallmouth, white perch, etc.
Glad to see an experienced and basically pro fisherman such as yourself uses a swivel to quickly change baits like I do. Honestly, I thought it was taboo.
Capt.Lee: I have guided from Canada, Lake Michigan, Kentucky Lake, Largemouth Bass in Florida and Captain/deckhand in the Gulf of Mexico for 30 years so I am an actual pro.( Not a wannabe just after views. You are right about the snap swivel. The only time I use one is on a wire leader for Muskies and Northern Pike. Using the swivel at the lure is taboo. I have never fished a place that dangerous to walk around in. Never had to. I pretty much catch great quality fish every time and every where I have gone.
@@Lee-yy2lrim with you and never use a clasp swivel unless like you said leader pike musky etc.. I hand tie everytime Palomar knot mostly with flouro and sometimes vary it up. I've had a huge pike in Maryland bend a 30lb rated leader clasp bc he thrashed hard to the side next to the boat after a grueling battle. I watched it swim away but the experience was still amazing. About 45" or so and for us that's huge here. Next best was a 39" from gunpowder river/loch raven res but that big un got me.
Have you ever tried a green jig head and a white twin curly tail ?! Slow to medium retrieval while bouncing it a couple times! landed a few big large mouths with them
Yessir 1 rod I promised in a few videos back imma be here for ever video now on after I stopped for a while so far I been keeping that promise beautiful fish location btw
I went up and fished Blue Ridge last week. Beautiful area. First time wading in a mountain stream. I definitely underestimated the strength of the current and how slippery those rocks were. Busted my ass and took a nice little swim in almost chest deep water but it was an awesome time haha. Great videos man.
YES. Fishing for Smallies on a River like that. We had Waders on but it was still crazy crossing the rapid river to get to the other side where our fishing spots were. Hey Dude, If you have cleats for your ice fishing boots, next time you go wading you should try putting them on your shoes or boots. You get a lot more traction and you'll feel 100% safer wading up and down the river. Good luck fishing. 👍 😊😊
@@norlanorellana788 I’ve been in NC for several years now (taking care of my mom), but I was in Laurel for the 20+ years before. I’ve caught hundreds of trout down behind Main Street…and literally thousands from Savage Mill. Catch a few for me this spring. Tight lines! 🔥
I have a great idea, do an mtb slam, but everytime you catch a fish it either has to be bigger or smaller than the last or it doesn’t count, and by bigger or smaller I mean atleast a half pound to a pound more or less. I think you’d love this. Seems like a hard challenge and I know you’re dedicated to challenges, I’ve seen videos of you out till dark from sunrise trying to catch fish. Cmon man. You can do this one 1rod, much love from massachusetts !!!
I don't know Mike. You should check out the river here. Don't call it the mighty for nothing. Dangerous shoreline jagged rocks ... But big fish everywhere. Cool vid too. Footage was awesome.😄👍
When I saw you climbing on that log pile, I looked down to my right shin automatically. I fell from a similar log pile before. It was REALLY FUN. (huge bruise got)😑
Has anyone else been in a dangerous creek/river situation before? 🎣😵
Yes. Absolutely

I fish dams on the Potomac and the Shenandoah rivers
Potomac river is sketchy, the currents are so strong
jip this one time i went fishing at the river and snaged a lure and wanted to go save it and as i saved it a huge crocodile swam past me

The Potomac river is the second most dangerous river in the United states in drownings ( the first, the Kern in California).

I plan to soon!
Mike is one of the few fishermen I know of that should include a snorkel as part of his daily kit.
LMAO 🎣😂👍
A fishing trip update with Kevin and Andrew . Funny fellas
I love how you take risks to fish spots others can not get to.
Your reactions when the fish start flipping and flopping 😂! Love it!

That is awesome! Just don’t get washed in, spillways can be treacherous especially if covered in slimy grass!
@@1Rod1ReelFishing luckily there was a guy with a fly rod to snag it. He was able to pendulum it. Couldn't quite get to the shoe due to slime.
