The HEV's suit voice is actually comforting. It makes the suit seem more "alive" than any other generic suit that you would wear in any other FPS. The warnings were always a useful touch, and its something I love about Valves attention they had to detail. Also, I love how the suit tells you different things depending on HOW you take damage (lacerations = claw swipes) and its geiger counter is always useful whenever there is radioactive sludge around. Again, attention to detail. More games should take a page out of Half Life's book.
Mitchell 117 I completely agree. You said what I was always thinking. The suit may look like just a normal suit, but it really does feel more like your companion throughout the game. To be honest, I grew attached to the HEV suit, just like Crowbar and Gravity Gun (seriously, if Valve could make you feel attached to your WEAPONS, you know they did something RIGHT!). The suit actually saved my life at times. Sometimes, I would be daydreaming, and I hear that familiar voice tell me "Vital Signs Critical", and I immediately start making sure I'm aware of my surroundings. I forgot about the Geiger Counter. I always used to wonder why there was a crackling noise every time I was standing next to radioactive waste. When I found out, I was amazed that Valve put that amount of detail in there. Its the small details that really add up to make for an immersive experience. I felt vulnerable and weak without the HEV suit on...something was missing. Once it was on, Gordon was home again. Great games like Halo and Half Life do a great job with making your interface COMMUNICATE to you, visually and even verbally. They give all the information you need to survive. Respectively, the MJOLNIR armor (Halo) and the HEV Suit (Half Life) are your partners too (they're always with you).
Cameron Cunnings Spot on. You actually nailed it. Most FPS games have your usual standard and cliche user interface (or HUD) by portraying numbers and meters on the screen to represent your health and armor, among other things. It feels cluttered and boring. Call of Duty is one example. Even though you don't have suits, it feels like the HUD is empty, not to mention that they don't have a sense of communication (I love how you said that). Another amazing game that uses a unique (and innovative) user interface is the suit you use in the Dead Space series. The suit Isaac uses has all the information he needs on his person (health meter on his suit spine, inventory emitted in a 3D interface in front of him, locator from the palm of his hand, and other stuff). The suit has a movable helmet too. It really is a part of Isaac throughout the game. Once he puts it on, I know he feels safe (or as safe as one could feel in a horror game). I think suits in video games are better than your boring HUD (where your character isnt wearing anything but somehow seeing numbers that shouldn't exist). The suits in the games we mentioned all feel alive, like a part of the characters, the wearer.
The suit technically becomes the only friend you can ever trust. It will never leave your side, it will never refuse to assist you in any way possible; it was MADE to help you.

The fact that the HEV suits apparently have ammunition storage areas and recorded lines telling the user what kind of weapon is hooked up to it makes perfect sense given Black Mesa is clandestinely sending operatives into Zen, but must have been a bit confusing for the Anomalous Materials guys.
I'd love to assume that the anomalous materials people have special weapons training for events that get a little too out of hand. The fact that Gordon, Gina, and Collette can all operate such a range of weaponry without anybody seeming to think twice about it and in fact trusts them with most tasks involving such weapons, I don't think they were too confused with the fact their hazard suits were giving them notifications about weapon system integrations. Kinda makes the anomolous materials team to be on par with military operatives if you ask me.
Black Mesa did have rather large divisions for just weapons research and development and had substantial connections with the government and military. The HEV was actually created for the military, yet they don't use it for whatever reason. Another thing to note is that the HECU use the PCV (powered combat vest), also developed by Black Mesa, which was essentially an HEV in vest form.
@@LukewarmFoxxo I'd like to assume it's cheaper to develop HEV suits for a team of scientists in an underground facility making proper use of hazardous conditions the suit can handle than it would be to produce for the whole military to march into combat with. With as much equipment the HEV suit has and how much utility it holds, and the fact it's battery operated, I'd imagine it took a pretty penny for the government to develop at least one Mark IV variant of the suit and would have likely cost far too much to equip a single army division with HEV suits than it would have been to equip them with cheaper, less effective PCVs while still holding major advantages over traditional combat armor.
