Walt: What's this stuff in the corner? Anyone else, I imagine, wouldn't have paid much attention if the head of the department didn't bring it up. Walt is the only one you couldn't easily pull one over.
I mean, in a way this did get a spiritual successor over in Hong Kong's Disney Land, Mystic Manor. Since ghosts and ancestors are highly revered over there, they couldn't do a haunted mansion, so instead, they made the manor of an old archeologist, showcasing all of his weird and mystic items he collected all over the world. A rideable Museum of the Weird in a way. Sadly, I don't think any of the ideas were actually repurposed save for the man eating plants.
The thing is a lot of the stuff he did was creepy weird. I would say that it belonged in a creep show as opposed to a museum for exotic items from all over the world. The Candle Man, for example, looked too disturbing for a Disney ride. Besides that, I imagine that they had a separate team working on Mystic Manor to try to keep away from anything having to do with the Haunted Mansion. As such, they would have kept all those ideas at a distance.
I thought it was canned for the same reason that Pirates of the Caribbean failed as a wax museum: it's easier to control crowds on moving vehicles than in a walkthrough attraction
Would be nice. Of course I can't help but think some of Rolly's work reminds me of Tim Burton in some cases (another guy the studio didn't know what to do with when he popped in).
Currently they're still working on the DL refurb of the HM. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for the new gift shop to be called the Museum of the Weird. It would be so appropriate.

That's a shame. I'm sure Rolly Crump would've loved to see that happen, though maybe Disney didn't ask first, who knows.

There’s actually a ton of shout-outs mansion in Mystic Manor.
My heart melted hearing Walt describe "how" they were going to bring in the ghosts.
"Museum of the WEEEEIIRRRD!" Love how Walt "phrases it" LOL

What this video doesn't mention is the Claude Coats take on Haunted Mansion: something darker. Personally, I'm #TeamClaudeCoats.
