bro, the cretaceous and the maelstrom were actually very great villians, they never needed to explain their origins or talk a bunch or even have scenes where they spout out their plans, no snarky insults to the main heroes, no cackling or sinister laughing, just simply predatorial instincts and quiet lurking, they are some of those very few villains who did not fuck around at all, you don't need them to tell you how evil they are, just them doing what they did proved all why they should be feared even more, the unsettling music, the quiet staring and the fact that they appear to always be around when you least suspect it, they may have been limited to water but that never stopped them from being able to track you down anywhere. What I also loved about them is how they gave more reason as to why manny, side and diego should stay away from the water as much as possible, it isn't safe and if you even stepped a tow in the drink then those monsters will do everything in their power to get at yah.... at any cost, for it isn't power or respect they most desire, it is food... food pushes them on and scariest of all is that there are theories that say they may still be alive in the ice age franchise to even the fifth movie, the fact that they could be anywhere in the world is frightening, they're still out there, lurking, hunting... waiting, and you know as long as they breathe, the waters will always be a dangerous place.

0:13 this scene always scared me as a kid, the way that both of them peaked out, sorta planning of what to do, buying their time, and waiting for the entire place to flood with water
Their first scene, with the music box stings, sudden stab when one of them stares at the center and whatnot, truly feels like something straight out of a slasher movie.
I first remember seeing these guys in theaters with my dad when I was a kid, and when I saw one of them move their eyes while still frozen in ice, I swear to god, somebody screamed! It made me jump a little and I’m just sitting there going, “JESUS!”

@Djez Stuurman I know about that. Maelstrom Jurassic is a pliosaur, or a Globidens a mosasaur. & me, Cretaceous Mesozoic, I’m a Ichthyosaur, or a Metriorhychus, a marine crocodile from the late Jurassic Period.
I thought it was very creative of the screenwriters and producers to have prehistoric sea creatures like these two to be in the movie and as villains. It’s like they’re seeking revenge on the animals that were able to thrive and survive in the climate that froze them. It was their time roam the earth like they once did.
I just felt that global warming is an apocalyptic type of event. It has worst things happening. Then there was hope to escape and you were like, yay, but then they show you those beasts. And you feel like it's hopeless again. Monsters that nobody knows how to deal with come back. What can we do now? They're in their element, they scream “I'm a killer”. (Then there was Scratched hopelessly trying to get his acorn.)

Cretaceous and Maelstrom are partners, despite the fact that they’re not the same species, since Cretaceous is an (inaccurate) Ichthyosaurus, and Maelstrom is a (inaccurate) Pliosaurus.
These two were comparable to the Carnotaurs in Disney’s Dinosaur: Neither say one word of dialogue, they just hunt and creep you the hell out by constantly creating a sense of unease/dread. Also, that scene where they eat Stu off-screen is so disturbing because you are left to imagine how he died, you’re only shown his empty shell and hear him scream once, which implies very graphic and painful way to die (likely by being torn out of his shell and savagely eaten). As much as I prefer Ice Ages 1, 3, and 4 (Yes, even Continental Drift, mainly because Gutt is my favorite Ice Age villian) over The Meltdown, I can’t deny that these two were the best part of the film, with Ellie being the second best thing about Ice Age 2.
@LordAlanDepthless Thalassophobia (from Ancient Greek θάλασσα (thálassa) 'sea' and φόβος (phóbos) 'fear')is the persistent and intense fear of deep bodies of water, such as the ocean, seas, or lakes. Though related, thalassophobia should not be confused with aquaphobia, which is classified as the fear of water itself. Thalassophobia can include fears of being in deep bodies of water, the vastness of the sea, sea waves, aquatic animals, and great distance from land.
Even till this day, they are truly eerie. The eyes, the music, the way they stare, their movements, their smile, etc. I remember when I was a kid I was terrified of them. I was so scared, that I stopped getting in pools for some time because in the back of my mind all I could think about was them.
Things I didn’t know/got wrong about Maelstrom and Cretaceous Maelstrom’s name is Maelstrom Cretaceous’ name is Cretaceous Thinking Maelstrom was a Dunkleosteus Thinking Cretaceous was a Sarcosuchus Thinking they both had more screentime
Cretaceous and maelstrom are my favorite ice age villains! They shouldve been more fight scenes involving them!! And by the way they shouldve made them able to talk. Like for example in the scene where they both keep ramming manny in the stomach (which would've hurt alot) they shouldve said "take that you hairy elaphant"!
I disagree. The fact they did not utter a single word made them more intimidating and cryptic. It would ruin the terror that came off their characters. Sometimes a good villian is not one that you know about, its the ones that you know nothing about. The fact they did not talk just adds more mystery.

As a kid, I use to get nightmares of these two.
Nice to know these guys official names all these years later
Cretaceous looks like a cross between a crocodile and a fish 🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟
@Cretaceous Mesozoic and Maelstrom looks like a iguana and a shark 🦈 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦎🦎🦎🦎🦎🦎🦎🦎🦎🦎🦎
Cretaceous is actually an Metriorhynchus
@@ryandujumbomammutuseafrica9674 & Maelstrom Jurassic is a Pliosaurus, but with thick armour like skin like Dunkleosteus
It was the music for me
That had me shakin when I was a kid😱😱😱
AWESOME VILLAINS!!!
I used to be interested with them as a kid
Katara and Sokka should be grateful it wasn’t these two they found in the ice.
These guys are the reason i have thalassophobia.
What’s thalassophobia
@LordAlanDepthless Thalassophobia (from Ancient Greek θάλασσα (thálassa) 'sea' and φόβος (phóbos) 'fear')is the persistent and intense fear of deep bodies of water, such as the ocean, seas, or lakes. Though related, thalassophobia should not be confused with aquaphobia, which is classified as the fear of water itself. Thalassophobia can include fears of being in deep bodies of water, the vastness of the sea, sea waves, aquatic animals, and great distance from land.
Idk abt y’all but these guys were my hyperfixations
I haven't watched this movie in years, i probably should watch it again.
Even till this day, they are truly eerie. The eyes, the music, the way they stare, their movements, their smile, etc. I remember when I was a kid I was terrified of them. I was so scared, that I stopped getting in pools for some time because in the back of my mind all I could think about was them.
Foreshadowing to the third movie about dinos still being alive
Jesus that eye turn still sends shivers down my spine along with with their specific theme
Just knowing you couldn't reason with them somehow I feel like makes them three times as scary
This is probably where my aquatic monster obsession started
Things I didn’t know/got wrong about Maelstrom and Cretaceous
Maelstrom’s name is Maelstrom
Cretaceous’ name is Cretaceous
Thinking Maelstrom was a Dunkleosteus
Thinking Cretaceous was a Sarcosuchus
Thinking they both had more screentime
Maelstrom was a mosasaurus and cretaceous is a metriorhynchus
@@antjaguar9 Again, wrong
@@damienbastings wrong about what?
@@antjaguar9 Cretaceous' species. You got Maelstrom right, he's suppose to be a Pliosaur which is similar enough
Maelstrom the pliosaurus
Cretaceous the ichthyosaurus
Cretaceous and Maelstrom ? Those are wicked sick names
I loved these guys as a kid
They were my favorite villains
As a kid I loved them lol
Cretaceous and maelstrom are my favorite ice age villains! They shouldve been more fight scenes involving them!! And by the way they shouldve made them able to talk. Like for example in the scene where they both keep ramming manny in the stomach (which would've hurt alot) they shouldve said "take that you hairy elaphant"!
I disagree. The fact they did not utter a single word made them more intimidating and cryptic. It would ruin the terror that came off their characters. Sometimes a good villian is not one that you know about, its the ones that you know nothing about.
The fact they did not talk just adds more mystery.
Maelstrom: take that you elephant
Cretaceous: what is the matter out of air heh- *ouch*
1:13 this right here after they dive in they could have say something
@@lordheck3170 you have a grave mind in your username is you're telling the truth but they could have least said one thing to know something that is not english to add more to the mystery
@@lordheck3170 Well, we can talk now
