- Remi Adeleke is a former Navy SEAL, having served in Naval Special Warfare and with SEAL Team 3 from 2002 to 2016. He is now a filmmaker and actor and has starred in "Transformers: The Last Knight" and "6 Underground." He is the author of "Transformed: A Navy SEAL's Unlikely Journey from the Throne of Africa, to the Streets of the Bronx, to Defying All Odds."
Adeleke breaks down the realism of SEAL Team scenes in movies and TV, from training to special operations, intelligence gathering and data collection, rescue operations, and direct combat. Movies Adeleke rates include "The Rock" (1996), "Tears of the Sun" (2003), "Captain Phillips" (2013), "Act of Valor" (2012), and "Navy SEALs" (1990). He comments on training scenes in "Lone Survivor" (2013) and "GI Jane" (1997). Adeleke also breaks down real-life raids and rescues in "Zero Dark Thirty" (2012), and "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi" (2016).

Nah they're two different things. Shallow water blackout happens because of a couple different factors when the water pressure changes as you get closer to the surface and the CO2 builds up in your system and you pass out. Drowning is what happens after.
Regarding the intelligence of SEALs... there is one guy, Dr Jonny Kim, who was a SEAL, retired and got his MD, then became an astronaut. And he's not even 40 yet.

I genuinely believe that Zero Dark Thirty has the most realistic depiction on a close quarters night operation I've ever seen. The quietness, the non-verbal communication, the sound design, the tactics. Absolutely phenomenal movie, go watch it if you haven't already
If you watched the BTS of ZDT, you'd kind of understand why it has the most accurate portrayal of SEAL missions.

Shot placement is king. Unless you hit the CNS and the target falls limp like a marionette with the strings cut, it's a good idea to administer at least a 500 grain "dosage" of projectiles (i.e. 8 rounds of 62 gr 5.56 duty ammo) to ensure a physiological stop.

LMAO...if you are here Leon, you are probably in the know, but just in case you are not, there is a channel called 'Active Self Protection'. The host shows different self defense situations, most involving handguns. These are recent, real world shootings. Some of it is US, some from Brazil... He shows the full clip, then goes back over it in a logical manner, giving his opinion of the actions, situation, and lessons learned. There was one video where a woman and mother places 3 40 S&W on center mass, at maybe one meter, it was close. ASP slowed the video, and you can see the bad guy get off 2 shots, but missing as he takes 3. He falls, she seeks 'concealment' next to a vehicle, but that guy did not die and he could have still been in the fight.
I remember seeing a Documentary about the U.S Marines who were fighting in Fallujah Iraq back in 2004 The Marines said the Insurgents had almost super human strength they would keep coming at them even after being shot multiple times... come to find out they were all high using drugs like Adrenaline etc.

People need to make a very clear distinction between military forces and politicians. The military sign up to defend their country, go where they are sent, and execute orders. They don't choose where they go or what conflicts they get involved in - politicians do that.
So, if you don't like the way that one country meddles in the affairs of another, blame the politicians who made the calculated decision to go meddling. Blaming the military is the equivalent of shooting the messenger.

I knew two Black SEALs personally. One I met during my time in the Navy, he was in SEAL Team 2, Little Creek. I met during my very last deployment with USS Stump DD 978, it was a UNITAS. I think he's still active so I won't mention his name. The other who I know has retired is Chief Richard Allgood. He's a few years older than me, his brother is one of my best friends. We all grew up together on the same street. Makes me proud to see brothas doing the damn thing! Good on ya! When he says he'd done a lot of those direct action missions, you can tell. His seems to change a little bit during the Zero Dark Thirty scene. It's almost like he's there mentally. Major hats off to this guy. He also seems like a stand-up dude, and his personality seems fun. I like that he factors in the Hollywood/entertainment factor when breaking these scenes down as well.

When I was a Marine, it was normal for leaders to get the input of their experienced people in deciding how to do things. I was enlisted for nine years and commissioned for eleven. When I was an officer, my first step when we got a tasking was to gather my staff NCOs and ask them how they thought we should proceed - I didn't always take their advice but I always asked for it.

@Bobby Knuckles in the first week of Navy boot camp everyone jumps into a pool and attempts to swim a short course. Everyone is rated a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd class swimmer. Everyone must pass this classification, and the instructors will teach you to swim well enough to complete the swim.
@Bobby Knuckles I didn't remember which week , but yes I know you only have to be a 3rd class swimmer to pass. When we lined up on the big diving board, we jumped in ( and the front of the pack swam very competitively ) swam a course marked by orange flags or maybe cones. Some things change over time, like we didn't do the abandon ship drill, when I was at GLRB.
Swim qual in Marine Recon is brutal especially if you float like a rock. You need to be a strong swimmer. This guy had more determination than swim experience.
Navy SEALs are some of the best guys that I have met. I trained every single day for almost 2 years for BUDs with a retired Navy SEAL and on-and-off with a Navy SEAL who was on active duty. I always was involved in contact sports when I was a kid: street and ice hockey, football, and wrestling. After college, I found my calling in the armed forces. Unfortunately, I was unable to go through BUDs because the requirements changed several months prior to me leaving. I had a felony charge, on my record, that prevented me from joining. Despite not being convicted and having that charge dropped, it was not enough. The two Navy SEALs worked really hard for me to go. They knew that I wanted it. They saw something in me that they did not see in the other men who were in our group. It was very emotional. I, often, wonder about what could have been. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to train with two of the greatest men that I have ever known. They taught me valuable lessons that I carry to this day.

Special operations types get what I've heard called "stress inoculation" in their selection and training. They put these guys through a controlled hell so that when they're in actual hell, they can still function. SEALs and Hell Week is one example. Ranger School is another. I've heard a LOT of stories about guys in Ranger School hallucinating because they're denied sleep and calories for long periods of time.
A friend of mine showed me a picture of himself just after he'd passed and became a Ranger. Dude looked like hammered shit. He honestly almost looked like a Holocaust survivor because he'd lost so much weight and been through so much stress.
Hilarious but also a connotation of like "Seals are badass, that's just how it is". Like for me I took away the idea that even if a Seal was severely injured they're so trained they would focus past that.

At 12:40 you can see the sadness in his eyes, his voice even cracks a bit recalling young children wearing suicide vests. This guy is a legit badass to the max, but he’s a real human being as well. Mad respect.

@@scallen3841 Not just Americans. I'm a British veteran and we, too, were targeted by suicide bombers in Afghanistan.
They were pretty much always either vulnerable kids (often orphans with nobody else to turn to, who had been groomed by the Taliban, trusted them, and were then strapped into vests they couldn't take off and had no control over as they were remotely detonated), or adults who were terminally ill (the Taliban would get them high "so they didn't feel it" when they detonated the vest & give their family money, so many felt it was the only way they could leave their family with any security).
I know far too many people with PTSD from having to make decisions about shooting innocent kids in order to save marketplaces full of families. The Taliban are beyond evil and the US should be deeply ashamed that they chose to negotiate with them and hand back power to them. They denigrated the memories of everyone who lost their lives trying to make Afghanistan better. Yes, withdrawal was needed, but it could have been handled so much better.
Its encouraging to hear someone from my borough, The Bronx, became a Navy Seal. Anything is possible with the right mindset no matter where you come from. Respect.
All SEALs come from the same place.

I appreciate your sentiment however, no anything is not possible. This message to children is part of how we ended up in this mess. Telling kids they can be/do anything they want to be is a lie that creates narcissistic brats that think they are special when they aren’t. I am 5-7 and have been overweight my whole life. If my parents told me I could be in the NBA that would be a lie and would have set me up for disappointment and failure. I did a NSF fundraising swim in January. Each swimmer was assigned a fallen SEALs picture card to swim for. Mine was Matthew. It was quite an honor to participate in an event like that.

I would know, it's not that hidden.
An assassin wouldn´t stand a chance against these dudes in a war setting. But while they´re on a barbeque having a booze they´re the ones with trouble on their hands. Context matters, assassins and SEALs are both effective killers but none are invincible. Deceptive tactics works against anyone who is relaxed enough not to notice what´s going on. But as soon as the SEAL realizes the danger the initiative switches, a skilled assassin would never let him see it coming though.

Thank You for your service, I spent a little combat time in Vietnam from Jan 1967 to Aug 1970. Except for time on home leave, r&r, & a few 2 & 3 day short down time periods, it was either boredom or cover, move, shoot, cover. Ahhh, the memories.

Fun fact, tears of the sun was a true story based on the Canadian unit JTF2 who did that mission in Africa. The Canadian Government did not allow Hollywood to say they were JTF2 because of security reasons.

Yea, alot of people sleep on Tears of The Sun. I've had the privilege to watch movies with spec ops guys I met through the VA (surprisingly I've only met 1 Seal since I've been home though but a few army SF guys, Rangers & a Force Recon Guy) and they all agree Tears of the Sun is underrated as a realistic tactics movie.
I read the guy's book and when I started reading the chapter, I was doubting his honesty. The man was arrested for soliciting minors and he claims the Canadian government set him up because he knew too much. I feel like the guy made it all up or at least some of it. He also blame the American sniper who was supposedly attached to his unit for that mission for revealing the informations on a plane to a script writer. Pretty sure none of it has been verified.

Mental endurance and a strong psyche is what the training is about.
Anyone can build a strong physical stature and have a good physique. But not everyone have what it takes in mentality and brains to become a seal.
There was a point when I could sense the pain he felt from remembering traumatic events. Much respect
I recall the tennis great Ivan Lendl was interviewed about his approach to the game & he said that it was 30% physical & 70% mental. From this Navy SEALs insight it must also ring true for them too from surviving that mind crushing training to facing great danger.
When he's discussing the Zero Dark Thirty scene, the way he spoke about the vests on women and children sounded exactly like my father who was in Vietnam. He generally spoke favorably of his experience there, the location, the people, being as Seabee (Naval Construction Battalion) he was there before almost anyone else and was there longer than most to build the bases, the roads, the docks. The only time he ever spoke about killing someone was one day when he was drinking after 25 years sober (following the death of his wife) and it was a 7 year old boy who had come to the base many times before with food, but this one time he walked up to the base with two live grenades in hand and my father killed him. Moments like that, you can hear the change in people that have experienced it.

I was a administration rate assigned on submarines. I went to and graduated from Navy Dive School, I had one combat deployment as part of joint operations. I’ve saved and taken lives and I’m still nothing compared to SEALs those guys are real life superhero’s.

Tears of the Sun is one of my favorite war movies of all time, up there with BlackHawk Down and HackSaw Ridge. Nice to see I had good taste for a reason
I need to watch Hacksaw Ridge...the other two I've watched 3 times...cried like a freakin baby on all times.
Tears of the sun is an amazing piece of work, and its also damn hard to watch.

Given the kind of missions these guys go on, they have to go faster, harder, longer than everyone else they encounter. The classes select for strength of will and physical capability to endure. It's better for everyone to get unsuited people to quit as soon as possible so you can focus on people who can meet the standards.

I’ve been stationed in San Diego and I was on guard duty once and a few times I saw some BUDS classes running their hell week. On Monday there was maybe 10 teams of 6 guys with the Zodiacs on top of their heads, come Friday there was only 3 teams left. It looks absolutely brutal and big ups to anyone who passes BUDS, even some of the most physically fit guys just don’t get through it

AFSOC PJs go thru "superman school" I believe it has the highest attrition rate of any MOS. The p[ipeline is almost 2 years long. My boy's class started w 106 people- 7 got thru it. In order to get thru it my boy's full time job for about 9 months prior to showing up for INDOC was spent training in mental and physical fitness including doing ultra marathons.
@Steven Bruno From what I learned, and did research on (because I was going to go into the Air Force to become a PJ), BUDs is very similar to how the Air Force trains their Spec Ops units as well. I almost guarantee that the Air Force Spec Ops (especially PJs) had to have inspiration in what they did to prep their guys (no women have made it all the way through training for Parascue, it's very tough training) with some tips from the Navy SEALS training because it is very similar in what they do. As someone who has an uncle who was PJ for 11 years before he retired from active duty and opened his own PI business in upstate New York, I saw from a distance what it took and how hard it was for him. Especially when he would tell me certain things about missions. He is a certified badass.
