  • Welcome to the 40th Episode of Photography 180...Thank you all so much for your support so far. This week's episode is all about getting better color balance in your images using correction gels and in-camera white balance adjustments.
When combining Off-Camera flash with ambient or constant light, chances are you may end up with varying temperatures which could lead to poor colors throughout your images. To combat this, we need to consider using in-camera white balance adjustments to match our camera to the ambient light temperature. From there, if we decide to use off-camera flash, we must use color-correction gels to balance the flash to match both the camera and ambient temperature. In this example, since the constant light was set to 4000k and our flash is daylight balanced (~5600k), we need to use some degree of CTO (Color Temperature Orange) gel to match the daylight-balanced light to the LED light.
    Here’s why:
Daylight-balanced lights are typically around 5600 (+/- 200k) which is much cooler (bluer) compared to 4000K.
To make your daylight-balanced light match the warmer ambient light at 4000K, you would need to warm up the color temperature of your light source.
A 1/4 CTO gel is a good starting point for this scenario to bring the daylight light (5600K) closer to the 4000K range. Depending on the exact ambient light temperature and the specific look you're aiming for, you might need to experiment with 1/2 CTO or other variations for fine-tuning.
