Very insightful. Also not comparing yourself to classmates, Insta posters, and teachers also knocks out all of the toxic thoughts and helps you improve your art in healthy mentality. Use those connections to build yourself and others up and give yourself CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. I always look up concept art from industry rate artists like Disney, Pixar, even past works from Warner Brothers, Blizzard, and Don Bluth because I know that’s where I want to be skill-wise.
This is so good! One of the best pieces of advice/statements I got when I was hired to work in Broadcast Graphics, was: "I hired you because you have great design, and you're style is clearly seen in your work. I can teach you the programs you don't know (Cinema 4D at the time) but I can't teach good design." Learning the basics of art, color, layout, design theory etc. is key, the programs/tools are secondary.
I moved from NJ to L.A. and lived on Barham Blvd. With 5 yrs of college and 2 degrees in art. Had 5 years working experience. Wanted to give animation a shot. Some would say I had pretty good success, but never worked for “Disney” per se. I worked as a character development artist for Iwao Takamota at Hanna-Barbera. And I worked for Phil Mendez and Michael Humphries as a background painter apprentice developing key visuals for a feature film. At the same time I worked with Floyd Norman and Ron Dias. Pretty good jobs for 1/2 year work, and great experience. At that time, I knew how lucky I was, and considered myself as very fortunate to be actually working with the best of the best. I left the animation business due to the journeyman nature, going from job to job I felt I wouldn’t be successful enough without consistent work. So I took the skills I learned and top drawer portfolio and moved on, and I’ve always been employed in the creative arts some way. My “Disney” training proved tremendously valuable. I wonder what happened to all those guys I worked with. Do you know? I know Iwao passed years ago. Ron Dias too, I think. I saw Michael Humphries name in the Lion King background credits. It’s you now who carries the torch. Enjoy following you here and on Instagram. Best wishes!
Hi Laura! I was wondering if you maybe one day wanna do a tutorial on how to draw bodies and anatomy? It would be an amazing help, because your tutorials are always so helpful! Thank you for making this content❤️
This is good advice for most careers, not just animation. Being able to objectively assess your own skills and compare them to the job you want to do is so hard, but so helpful. Apply to a job already knowing that you are skilled enough for it, instead of hoping that the hiring manager will see some inner spark or whatever.
Thank you so much for the tip! Making animations and artwork that meet industry standards makes SO much sense and being as realistic as possible with your work is very helpful.
Thank you so much for this 💜 I’m currently in college, learning and practicing the foundations of art: angles, proportions, and perspective and I’m training my eye better for those things. I want to do better but I want to still hope I can eventually be good enough for a job 🙏🏻
Thank you for this! When I was a little kid I always wanted to work for Disney! I had an art teacher in College who did the background scenery for Lilo and Stitch. He was teaching a charcoal class that I attended. I was sitting in the room after class drawing waiting for my ride home. I was drawing a lioness from a clipping of a magazine. He came over and looked at it and told me I was ready for Disney. I was excited to hear this but personally I didn’t think I was ready. Still learning. Especially in color because I was only using back and white. Now I started drawing in color and digitally! I’m not comparing myself to anyone or anything but I know where I’m struggling with and I would like to perfect those areas before even considering being “ready”.
Not comparing myself to my classmates is SOOO hard sometimes. I did that constantly in my previous class and I always felt bad, and then my school posted one of my pieces on their instagram! I was blown away! They only did that for two of us. It made me feel so validated, but I also realized there might be something to my work I wasnt seeing because I was too busy looking at everyone else. Haha
Thank you for this video, Laura! I'll be heading to California this week to get my portfolio reviewed. Lol I know I'm not ready yet, but I can't wait to see what I can do to improve and to get to that point.
Thank you so much! This is one of the reasons I love your chanel because of this type of videos, I think that this little tips help everyone who´s interested in animation industry, for me is hard to find information about it because is a small industry. Also I´m super excited with your vlog in lightbox! And where did that dog you follow in Greece went? (sorry for any english mistake)
Congrats on the wedding!! I would love to work as a storyboard artist at Disney and Pixar, however I know my skill set isn't their yet which is why I am learning everything I can and improving my drawing skills. Your videos help guide me in the right direction and what to look for in my own portfolio. Great video and tell Mabel I say hi.
Second to comment on a Laura Price video!!! Amazing advice too thanks!!!!!! I shall implement these and also advice people on my channel too hopefully! Thankyou
Hi Laura! Can you do a video about developing a personal style? I struggle with all my drawings looking like they were done by different people, especially between different subject matters like characters vs scenery
Thank you for all your videos around the animation industry. As a cartoonist with mostly a background in zines/comics, your videos have been very useful for me to get a realistic idea of how to rework my art as I am about to move to Los Angeles to pursue getting into the industry. Hope to cross paths- regardless thank you again for being thoughtful with your advice.
It was so nice to meet you today! My daughter was feeling super shy (remember those high school days??) and was somewhat mortified that I was doing a lot of the talking for her, but she was so happy to meet you. The environment art she bought from you with her commissions $$ is already on her wall in her bedroom. Thank you again, and Congrats on the wedding! Yay!!! Rory said she is SO bummed she doesn’t get to meet the puppy tomorrow, but she has to paint that senior parking spot! :p Have a great weekend!
Snuff (according to what I found) means “to put out/cut out” usually a flame like on a candlestick so- “Art is up to the snuff (the cut)” is chill and makes sense
My dream is to become a character designer for Disney and you really help me a lot and your such a great inspiration for me! I wish u all the best with your job and everything els ❤️🥳
Love this vid. You're such a help and I just want to appreciate the effort you put into these vids. Shows us that you truly care. Honestly my future dream of being a character designer would've been impossible without you ♥️♥️♥️
Awesome video! You're so incredibly helpful and nice :) I'm a bit curious. When creating a physical portfolio, what kind of paper do you use to print out your art? Is there a specific company you rely on?
By the looks of it, I don't think Mabel was taking your portfolio advice very seriously. We're looking forward to seeing your wedding pictures & video! 😉😃
I'm confident that I'm at a decent enough skill level to get a job at an animation studio as an artist: any artist job, really. I would be happy working anywhere, even an indie studio, it doesn't have to be Disney/Dreamworks but.....even though I'm confident in my abilities, I have stilled failed miserably at getting a full time artist job. I want to give up tbh but making art is like....the one thing I can do right and felt like I was meant to do. I lack experience obv because no one has given me the opportunity .__. It's been 4 years since I graduated art college and I have had no luck and I want to give up but for some reason I think I'll luck out, even though at this point and with this little progress that doesn't seem likely. I know it sounds sad but sometimes I feel like some people are just never meant to amount to anything and I'm just one of those people. And everyone's first reaction is to tell me to change my attitude, to think positively. I mean, I try? sometimes? But its hard to do w/ crippling depression...
Hey Laura! Thank you so much for all the amazing advice you're always giving us :) I watched a video where you talked about not needing to go to art school to work in animation, and I completely agree (I'm doing that myself, actually hahaha). And something I've struggled with is choosing what to study. I mean, I know I have to study the fundamentals and build up from there, but I'm having some trouble in finding out when I'm ready to study a new subject and what that subject should be. I looked at the detailed programme of multiple art schools for some light, but I guess that made me more confuse. Do you have any advice? :) Thx so much again!
thank you so much for this video and congrats on getting married!! your insight and advice is always so helpful and valuable! I just had one question, would this same advice be applicable to interns/students looking for internships in these fields? I’m curious, since most internships are a learning/growing opportunity for people, so would we need to be at that professional level to get hired for one?
I think what I struggle with, as I currently apply for jobs, is knowing if I have any business bothering applying for certain positions. I have been told “apply anyway, apply for things you are not qualified for, and THEY will tell you you are or are not”. BUT idk I feel like while I understand that, I’m almost afraid of GETTING a job I apply for and unintentionally somehow being misleading and then going in and being completely lost or not knowing some common practice, and then either getting FIRED or just being a seen as a complete unprofessional/unqualified employee. I’m probably more afraid of that than just NEVER getting a job. Applying for jobs feels kind of paralyzing at the moment.
If you get hired for a job that you're not actually good enough to do, frankly that's their problem, not yours! The onus is on them to make sure they hire the right person. After all, THEY have to pay YOU. Getting thrown in over your head is a really fast way to learn. :)
I don't really understand this thing about style. I mean we all have our own styles sure but surely there's only so many styles of art out there we can create. And surely recreating a style is a good thing in animation considering it all needs to look consistent. But obviously there a difference between using a style and stealing an artwork by copying it.
You know how you get hired ? Luck and timing , if youre in the right moment at the right time you'll get hired! Doesnt matter if you have the best portfolio or not , of course you need certain level of skills, but its not true that because you have a good ass portfolio you'll get hired , the world doesn't bow to your wishes. If they dont need people at the time you wont get the job. And its like any other job
Any tip for starting your first job? Because all the jobs I see requieres 3 years of experience and I have to look jobs like junior artists but I don't found in any studio. Regards from Spain!
From what I've heard the best thing to do is just apply anyway. If your portfolio is strong it should speak for itself and if you get an interview you can hopefully convince them why they'd want you as part of their team. Just go for it!
what if you feel like your skill level is higher than those in the industry currently? I feel like my skill level is a lot higher than say, Rebecca Sugar. is this a barrier? or would things be easier for me?
I dont know if you answered this question but I'm going to ask you anyway. A few months ago i think you said that were going to pursue the art of animation at Disney. Were you accepted in that catagory and what projects did you work on?
So, if I follow what you are saying, for people just starting out, they need to be as good, or better, then veterans with decades of experience? How exactly do you make this miracle happen?

thank you! no, I don't believe they're ageist when it comes to hiring artists. they want the best of the best. their hiring is based on portfolios. the majority of people I work with are much older than me, in their 50s-60s, and some artists I know were first hired in their 40s. I can't speak for Pixar, but this is what I've experienced at Disney. and thank you!
Finally some realistic advice and not just "don't compare your art to others at all!"! Thank you! ❤
Very insightful. Also not comparing yourself to classmates, Insta posters, and teachers also knocks out all of the toxic thoughts and helps you improve your art in healthy mentality.

Exactly. Practice
Such a simple advice to which many of us doesn't pay attention.
Congratulations on your marriage!! Do you think Disney, Pixar, and other animation industry leaders are ageist when it comes to hiring creative talent? Or possibly, are non-Millennials not woke with team trends and diversity as we know hiring is subjective, and who you like, as much as whether someone can produce. I would appreciate your honest reply. I’ve worked in creative for 42 years, various industries, had successes and knocks... where do you think hiring really stands today. FYI, I love your work.
