Series always looked fluid n smooth with it's animation, the 60fps is a nice touch of detail on it. What if this could be done on games like Genesis Aladdin, Rocket Knight Adventures (that game has tons of whacky animations), maybe donkey kong country.
@@chazlewis8114 it isnt! kinda fucks up with the animations, just feels artificial plus you need to be actually be playing it on a sprouting potato for you to need frame gen on something that ran on a neogeo
Nope, the series was always 30fps. The games go crazy with all kinds of explosions and effects happening at the same time, so they must have figured there was no way they could attain 60fps on the Neo Geo.
frame gen does not add input lag, it changes how you percieve movement in the content, the latency should be the same as your base framerate, in this case = 1000/30 = 33.33ms, it can add a couple of ms here and there, but in the majority of scenarios framegen always is going to have the latency of the base framerate, the term you are looking for is latency. In this case it's the same, in contrast, input lag it's highly dependant on your monitor and hardware, it's the time it takes to your button presses to be reflected on the screen. I forgot to mention, also it depends in which step of the pipeline the frame gen is implemented, it can add a LOT of latency in some scenarios, sorry for the botched initial explanation.
Frame generation works by interpolating between two "real" frames. So, rather than always seeing the latest frame delivered by the game, you're seeing an interpolation between the previous and current frames. That means you'll be getting input lag that's proportional to the game's real framerate. The lower the real framerate is, the more input latency you're adding. I very much could feel the input lag when playing the game like this, and it's the biggest reason why I'll stick to the game's normal 30fps output when I play it next.
I disagree with it being "the way it was meant to be played" when it's pretty apparent it was a technical limitation. The same team made similar games (like GunForce 2) that was 60fps. The Neo Geo hardware just couldn't keep up with the style of game they wanted to make.
Yeah, and if they made the game for more powerful hardware or if they remastered the game today, they would probably opt for 60fps. 30fps is extremely unusual for this kind of game. It's like saying it would be unholy to play Shadow of the Colossus at a higher framerate than 20fps because that's how it ran most of the time on the PS2, even though, just like Metal Slug on the Neo Geo, it's very clearly a limitation due to the hardware and they most likely would have gone higher if they could. I can understand preferring 30fps because this frame generation approach has some major drawbacks, and I agree with that as the increase in input latency isn't acceptable for me, but saying Metal Slug should only ever be played at 30fps is madness to me.
Hard to explain why this looks really bad, but this looks unplayable, for me at least. Also is that an AI Fio in the thumbnail? It's 2025... If not, I feel bad for the artist.

You can do the exact thing I did here with the games you mentioned. You could also use it for 60fps games to make them 120fps.
Love it 😭🔥
looks like when people interpolate peoples animations to be at 60fps
weird stuff
Yeah, it's weird but it doesn't really feel like an improvement to me.

Like what i'm seeing! Looks like a entirely different game.
Thanks for a new video. ❤❤❤
It wasn't 60 before? :O

@@fluffyquack so this should work with CRTs
naaah get those 30 fps back thats how the game is meant to be played

Running framegen on a 30 fps game is so annoying. The visuals look amazing, but the input lag ruins the experience. Great gameplay btw 👍

Interesting!
Ever heard of emulation?
I used an emulator for this, so that might answer your question.
