    Personally I wanted to thank you for this update video of the CalTrain Electrification; I've begged the other fanrailer's if they'd post any updates. But, you're the only channel to post an update. So, again thank you!

    A really appreciate the feedback...these Caltrain video updates look like they are becoming more important since for some time now, CalTrain's CALMOD site has been down for what ever reason which means no official updates from the Joint Powers Board (Caltrain) on construction. There has been some posting on the regular Caltrain site but most is outdated.

      Other than the e-mails they send out detailing what construction is happening, but those are almost the same every time I get one...not a lot of details in those emails.

    HI Frank....more grade separations are in the planning stages and the new EMUs have dual loading capability but obviously that feature will not be used until all the stations are upgraded with high platforms. That will not happen for some time I think.

    When the train stopped at Millbrae, it switched to the L5

    This is totally unexpected. You have my permission. Tell me more about the Bay Area Bountiful series and when and where this particular episode will air.

    CalTrain is a beautiful system. The two things i wish they would have done was grade elimination and high platforms.

      It appeared to model on a cross between light rail and French/Euro HSR - look at the northern and central California light rail (as shown in Captain Marvel) - the signaling has more in common with more in commonwith road - not rail.

    Yes, thank you for posting:). It really helps us keep the faith with things taking so long. I have a question if you have a minute. I saw at the Hillsdale, Millbrae, and SSF stations there is a single elevated section with ramps on the platform I do not see this at most other stations. I don’t think it can be just for wheelchairs? Is it something to do with baby bullet service? Is it for the new electric trains with their multiple door heights? I’m stumped. Thanks!

    Hello David, would you consider granting permission for use of a snippet of this very cool video as part of a public TV story on Caltrain electrification for our November episode of "Bay Area Bountiful" with on-screen credit?

    Lorail, yes to your question. Hardware supply issues and Covid have been the reasons from what I have heard.

    Watching this a worker for GO Transit. Caltrain is similar in many ways. I think the only thing we have is a few substations built but that's it. Caltrain seems much further along in its electrification project compared to GO. While I will miss the diesels, they are incredibly slow compared to electric trains. Diesels aren't really efficient at all with the constant stopping and starting either. Not to mention they are super loud and unpleasant for operating crews and passengers (well, except a select few of us that like the noise). It is cool every once and a while but being in a locomotive and trying to conduct and communicate, it is annoying having your eardrums blasted open in throttle 8. Not as fun as you might imagine. Lol

      David, do you mean "catenary" in your 2nd sentence? I was noting there isn't catenary at the time of your shooting. Invisible catenary? Who new?

  • @jfletch09
    @jfletch09 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is it just me or does south San Francisco station look like it’s catenary is build to sit over 3 tracks (north bound, south bound, and one to the east of the north bound) at the platform instead of 2? While I’m excited for electrification, I think it’s short sighted not to prioritize building additional passing trackage on the peninsula in advance of CAHSR. A mile segment of unused quad trackage already exists south of Redwood City station. Hopefully they’ll figure out an efficient use for that.

    Almost appears they left the old telegraph poles up (removed the crossarms though), strange!

    Why does the train ring so often? Doesn't it disturb the people around? Why are there maybe two or three red lights on the signals? I find signals on American railwayss unnecessarily difficult. The U.S. should take an example from OSShD (OSJD) signals.

      rs. the bell is a satey device . many places thay cant blow whistles . in the 1800s when a steam engine came into town drifting quietly horses got spooked and so did people . hencne the bell also insurance regulations . many cases we do have cab signals and something called positive train control.

    Isn't electrification too much behind schedule?

    • @hadlock
      @hadlock ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, was supposed to start revenue service in dec 2021. the foundations for the electrical overhead wires (about 50% of the entire project) in many months did not build any, and at one point they "forgot" to order rebar and ran out for months. The trains were delayed for two reasons 1) train engineers from europe could not come to the US due to covid quarrintine at the time and 2) many many covid outbreaks at the final assembly plant in utah. Caltrain now has two trainsets in their custody and an electrified section of track that they can do testing on. The original director of the caltrain electrification project was fired in 2021 and replaced. He is/was the same guy in charge of overseeing the sf central subway which is also wildly overdue

    The JPB can take that electrification and stick it, once Caltrain goes electric I won't even consider them to be a true railroad. Long live the F40's and gallery cars

      They should have been electric when steam traction went away.

      I the State of California was smart, we'd be talking to the Class 1's about using their right-of-way for new high tension transmission lines, with the caveat that the railroads have to electrify their lines in the state...that's what I'd be pursuing as either Governor or head of the state power grid.

    • @daniellewis1789
      @daniellewis1789 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zaklex3165 Unfortunately electrifying the freight railroads, while helpful, won't create congestion free passenger routes. Passenger trains will still be stuck behind slower freights, since even if you hooked a 200+ mph locomotive to a freight train the cars can't go that fast, and that slows the whole corridor down.
      Building electrified high capacity freight corridors should be a national priority too, but that's separate from the high speed passenger rail priority.

      By that logic literally no other railway except heritage railways and Metra would be considered a true railroad.
      Grow up.
