Awesome stuff. This aligns nicely with a request of all my workers: always fold over the end of the tape roll to create a “courtesy tab” so the next guy doesn’t fight to find the end of the roll. Well done!
worked for hours on a project and could never figure it out and then thought to look for video and watched you and BINGO! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I APPRECIATE YOU!
Thank you. I had a really tricky repair job on my waterproof jacket which involved using double sided tape before stitching and it was driving me mad. Thanks to your tip I was able to finish that part of the job in minutes. I can now wear my repaired and reproofed jacket for another few years. Carol UK
I was just bitching at my roll of double-stick tape this morning and vowed to find a better way. Ironically I found this just a few hours later. Thanks for both the tip and the recommendation for which tape to buy as I've been searching for a better one than I've been using. Appreciate it greatly.
First time I saw you do that in one of your early videos and it was like a light bulb lit up in my head. One of the great ones, I blame you for all the money I've spent on double-sided tape since then, lol. Great tip! Keep em comin!
Great tip. Looking forward to the time and frustration savings by doing it. I am so guilty of cutting beforehand. Now what I need is a good tip to *remove* the tape from the board. To me that is the hardest.
It took me literally years of using double sided tape the hard way before o figured this method out. You, my friend, are a steely eyed middle man for posing this. EVERYONE should be doing it this way.
I’ve been using double sided since the first time you showed this. I now have at lease two rolls going all the time (and I curse myself every time I forget and cut the backing. Thank you sir!
I have been fighting with this tape in the shop for so long. Thank you! I saw a Japanese woodworker on yt using a boxed roll of tape. The tape is perforated every cm for easy rip and the backing comes off super easy. He can use it with one hand quickly. I would love some of that tape. Anyway thank you for the tip. I will stop cutting people's tails and also stop wondering why they left the tape such a mess!
The more of your content I watch, the more I ask myself why I'm not using 2xSide tape more. Great video, man. I think your tape brand ought to consider sponsoring you.
Neat little tip - I like it. Though I must confess that I tend to use double sided tape a lot less since I was shown the cheaper alternative of using masking or painter’s tape and super glue - I’m guessing you’ve seen it? There must be hundreds of videos of that on TH-cam but I first saw this from Ben on Crimson guitars, who uses tons and tons of cheap masking tape instead of double sided tape. With that you don’t have to try to remove any backing tape, as you’re just putting a small amount of CA glue between the reverse sides of 2 layers of masking tape (after you’ve mounted the tape on the pieces to be temporarily joined). It’s strong enough to hold a piece of wood down while you plane it, and makes it super easy to work with tiny little work pieces where clamping is awkward. However most of the time it’s just faster than even going to grab a clamp!
I saw your original video, so this is updated reminder. I use CNC often and need strong grip tape, with easy peel off after carve. So really needs to be stronger than paper, so cutable, rather than tearable needed
Try XFasten Double Sided Tape on Amazon. It is very strong, been using it for years. Comes in .25" - 5" and is inexpensive compare to other DLB side tapes. I tried to leave a link, but YT will not let me.
How incredibly and immediately useful. I've been using the stick, poke, cuss method for decades. Duh. Because of the frustration with tape, I would try almost anything to avoid using it. Thanks.
I tried the way you mention but always found the bit left on the rool would be crinkled. I'm sure there is a nack to it, but I don't use it often enough I guess. On a side note, I saw a Japanese tape that had the sticky portion slightly narrower than the paper portion, so it was so much easier to just peel back. Not sure why this hasn't caught on? perhaps it's more difficult to manufacturer?
It's because how tape is generally made. It's typically manufactured in wide rolls, anywhere between 4 and 12 feet, then cut into narrower rolls. When they cut the rolls to size, there's no way to leave a smaller overhang.
I use the same tape and love it. I have tried leaving a tail of the backing but then I end up having to tear off an inch+- or so of the tape itself that has started to lift up since the last time I used it and that bit has lost most of its stickiness. Of course nothing for tape, including duucktape, seems to stick very well to the backing like to hold the tail down. How do you keep yours from unrolling and loosing its stickiness?
I use it enough that it's never a problem. But you can just keep a rubber band handy. Or you can use electric tape and go around the roll once so it sticks to itself.
A simple trick, but I've never thought of using it. I will definitely be giving it a try though. The two most difficult backings to peel off are label printers and lamination pouches. If you had tips for those I'll subscribe for sure! Actually, you have already earned a subscription, and I have learned some very useful trips and tricks in the three or four of your videos I have watched so far this evening.
Spectape is a great double sided tape, usually not to bad removing the top paper, now we all experienced that 🤬 carpet tape, now there’s a challenge 99% of the time.. as usual Awesome tips, thanks.
Been using this tape dating back to the 80’s. Name may be different but the same stuff. I go through 15-20 rolls a year and buy from Taylor tools now but before peachtree. Before internet I don’t remember.
Great tip. Being anal retentive about cutting tapes straight and square, I always face this problem and it really annoys me, wastes time and, sometimes, tape too. This is a good way out of it. Thanks!
And also...APPLY THE TAPE IN THE DIRECTION OF FORCE. For instance, if you are sticking down some thin stock to the work bench in order to plane the stock along the grain, apply your tape ALONG THE GRAIN. Don't apply the tape cross-grain. The strength of sticky tape is its resistance to SHEAR force. Apply the tape in the same direction that you intend to apply force to the workpiece.
Probably one of the most useful tips I've learned in my 18 years of woodworking. 🙂
Yep
Awesome stuff. This aligns nicely with a request of all my workers: always fold over the end of the tape roll to create a “courtesy tab” so the next guy doesn’t fight to find the end of the roll. Well done!
I love the fact that your videos are short, concise, and to the point .Who has 20 minutes to watch a 3 minute video? Good tips and well communicated.
worked for hours on a project and could never figure it out and then thought to look for video and watched you and BINGO! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I APPRECIATE YOU!
Saw this once. Forgot how you did it. Went back today. It works! Thank you.
Same.

Great tip to keep the backing longer than the tape itself. Works well with aluminized tape you’d use in ducting too.
Saw you do this awhile back and I'm a convert. I used to hate sticking thin boards to a planer sled and now it's a trivial task.
Great tip thanks.
When taking backing of with knife etc, its much easier if you point the Sharp edge backwards. Scraping it of instead.
Try it 🙂
First time I saw you do that in one of your early videos and it was like a light bulb lit up in my head. One of the great ones, I blame you for all the money I've spent on double-sided tape since then, lol. Great tip! Keep em comin!
Glad you created a short version of this. It's breathtakingly useful!
Great tip. Looking forward to the time and frustration savings by doing it. I am so guilty of cutting beforehand.

Brilliant tip, I've always found it a pain in the arse trying to get the backing off it.
I’ve been using double sided since the first time you showed this. I now have at lease two rolls going all the time (and I curse myself every time I forget and cut the backing. Thank you sir!
Where do you buy this tape?
I’m just doing a bit of scotch double sided tape to help keep some non adhesive shelf liner from moving and this was super helpful

This is one of the most helpful videos in the planet
Stupid simple but I never thought of it before! Old dog just learned a new trick... Thank you!!
I've been doing it the hard way forever...thanks for the awesome tip!
What a quality, simple little tip. Love this channel!
Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks. This one is valuable - well worth the price we had to pay for it.

Something so easy to do but I wouldn’t of thought of that Great idea thank you so much and thanks for sharing
Good video. I’ve done that for years and works great. But do you have a trick for removing the tape when done?
I saw your original video, so this is updated reminder. I use CNC often and need strong grip tape, with easy peel off after carve. So really needs to be stronger than paper, so cutable, rather than tearable needed

Awesome help! This was the best tip!
You should let the tape companies know the are not giving good instructions!
I really appreciate these quick and extremely useful videos. Thanks.
It works! Even on half inch wide tape thank you!
Yo Dude keep it flowing genius of a tip simple don't have to be tidy with tape just your workpiece priceless
I have a piece of blue stick tack I keep near the bench for pulling the backing off of double sided tape. I used to use another piece of tape...
Thanks, gonna be using this tip for sure!
This is life changing, right after dog-earring my gaff tape.
That aspect of using that tape has always put me off using it, but now....... Thank you 😊
Very useful, simple tip. Thanks for sharing it.
Wow now that’s a great tip, thank you…. That will make my life so much easier in my workshop 👍👍👍👍
Wow! Thanks!
I did not expect to so look forward to using double sided tape.

@@JCWren of course. Makes sense! 👍
Thank you! Great vid, straight to the point.
You need to be on the maker's channel! Thanks for the great tips.
How do you get the tail in the first place?
I use the same tape and love it. Simple but effective trick!
I noticed how you always had that tag end in your videos. I tried it out and it's been working great for me. Thanks
My only problem with this hack is that the tape I use has to be cut with a blade, it can't be torn. But the idea of the extra backing is great.
great tip. thanks
Amazin, a YT video that was actually helpful and devoid of annoying rambling . 👍👍👍
I have seen you do this before and started doing it. Great tip!
learnt something new, you got my up vote 👍
Thank you sir. This is extremely helpful.
Brilliant!! So simple, but so effective. 👍
And to think I had given up on this tape! Thank you so much!
Great tip!
Awesome, dude! Thanks! 😃
And yeah... I fought too much with double sided tape in my life. 😬
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
SO BLOODY SIMPLE Many thanks
Useful tip. I was one of those guys until now.
You solved it. Thank you!
So i have touched the tape i use 10 times with my fingers. This is usefull in some cases in others it compromises the strengh of the tape alot.
Tried it... works great!!!
What about taking the tape off and not leave a sticky residue?
Thank you so much that will be helpful
Ha! Every day’s a schoolday , , , , , brilliantly simple 👍
That was my biggest problem with double sided tape is fighting to get the cover off it was a nightmare now I know what to do thanks a lot.
Oh my god this is genius!
I knew there must be a better way to do this. Thanks a lot.
You, are a God! Thanks mate
Good tip, checked out your video’s and subbed. Thanks
Thank you so much.. getting frustrated sometimes to just peeling off the upper layer 😂
Very useful tip. Thank you.

Gee whiz!
So simple when you think about it, but a great idea 💡
Good tip. My scissors are so gummed from cutting tape, I can hardly operate them. Lol.
Same as what I do for tin tape on ductwork…nice tip
Once you know it, it sounds so logical, thanks 😊
Thank you! :)
This does not work well with typical carpet tape. It is really difficult to tear without destroying it.
What did you expect from a "stop doing this" type of video ?
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing

The preotective tape doesn't separate from the sticky side for me. What then? 😅
Thanks.
Great tip. Being anal retentive about cutting tapes straight and square, I always face this problem and it really annoys me, wastes time and, sometimes, tape too.
This is a good way out of it. Thanks!
Outright genius
This is great!

The ad that came up when I clicked your video was for scissors. 😂
Genius!
But what a good idea!
Brilliant, why didn't I think of that? DOH!
Gold!!!
NICE,
Why didn't i think of that????
THANKS 😀
This is exactly what I came to find - but how do I get it started? I can't get that stuff off to save my life from a heavy duty roll. LOL!
Frickin' genius
