Advanced Cube Construction, a guide to Design theory and Upgrades strategy for Cube. When you first start building cubes, the focus is on individual cards, and individual colours. People usually start out by putting a bunch of cards that they own in a box and hoping for the best (albeit ensuring that there are an equal number of cards in each colour). Or they'll by constructing a "Best of Magic The Gathering" style list with all of the best cards ever printed. That's a fine way to start out, but where do we go from there?
This video will advanced concepts of designing and upgrading your cube. Please note: this video is on the advanced level, and meant for people who already familiar with cube, and likely have a basic cube of their own.
When you started your cube journey, cube was likely just about individual cards and individual colors. Your initial approach to your list may have been put together using broad brush strokes - “Blue is the Control Color”, “Red is the Aggro Color”, “Green is Ramp” - Perhaps you could show some stereotypical cards at this point, Counterspell, Goblin Guide, Llanowar Elves etc.
A great way to improve your cube is to start thinking about two color combinations. What do you want the two color combinations to do? Assuming you decide to build a typical cube where the cards are split evenly between all five colors, then the majority of the time your drafters will end up picking cards from two colors.

This is an incredible video for Cube designers. The way to look at two-colour combinations is spot on. This is a fantastic way to build on a budget as well since you're more interested in supporting an archetype than just looking for the best, and very often, most expensive cards in each colour.

That actually sounds pretty cool. A cube designed so that everything works based on tokens. No cards in the cube can be included if they don't involve tokens in some way.

    Great video, Professor!
Your Cube video - the Cube for Beginners - inspired me to build a Peasant cube. It's a complete abomination, but I keep it on my CT account for the sentimental value.
Now I'm going to be building a Cube that's actually good fun to draft. 360 cards, not pauper or peasant. It's just a Cube built around decent, budget-ish cards that I can pick up around 10-15$ at most, along with some of my more expensive cards like Tasigur and Kolaghan's Command.
    Seems like it'll be fun!

Our powered cube was thrown together and refined over the last year or so through many drafts ranging from 4-8-10 people. And it kicks ass! But we don't focus as much on certain archetypes as much as making sure every card is useful in different strategies and even late picks should help someone in that color. There is a LOT of mana fixing, and so 3 color decks tend to be played fairly often. Even a splash of a 4th or 5th color is not unheard of. It is a whopping 600 cards though...

Only really played cube once. Drafted mono red. First-picked a Goblin Guide, relying on the only other red card in the pack, Stoke the Flames, to wheel. Was feeling very proud of my signalling skills 😊. Ende up beating everyone except the Sneak Attack combo player.
(But I played a bunch of extra games against them while we were waiting for the others to finish; they quit it when the stats were starting to tip in my favour 😁.)

I think my approach to my current (Proxied) Power Cube was to chuck in as many Eternal Combos as possible and bolster them with goodstuff, synergies and removal. Countertop, Bomberman, Splinter Twin, Abzan Melira Combos, Aluren Combos, Tinker Shenanigans, Sneak and Show type things, etc. were the first to go in, then I realised I should bolster the main combos with cards that play well with the combo and also close out games.

It's very common to suggest guild synergies when designing cubes, but the downside is that you limit the deck options for your players. "Well, I've been drafting green and white, so I guess I'm doing a token deck." And maybe that's fine for your playgroup; maybe people are perfectly happy doing the Rakdos aristrocrat deck this time, and the Boros aggro deck next time, and so on. But as a Johnny, I find I enjoy drafting so much better when there's interaction across the cube, and drafting two (or three) colors doesn't always mean playing the same way.
Similarly, "strictly better" on an individual card scale (#3 in your "upgrades and cutting" section) isn't the same thing as "strictly better" for a cube. Sure, the original Counterspell is going to be strictly better than any other counterspell. But Wash Away may be more interesting in a cube that has lots of flashback, disturb, and similar graveyard abilities. Besides, "strictly better" cards limit player drafting agency. You see it in a pack, so you draft it. There's no weighing of pros and cons, no determining how you can make an interesting strategy out of it, or any of that. It's always good, so it's always a card you should pick.
Cubes should always be designed thoughtfully, no question about it. But sometimes less is more, and overthinking/overdesigning a cube can result in an inferior outcome.

I'm thinking about putting a cube together with some friends of mine. I was at a recent modern get together at the local card store and a friend had actually printed out a whole cube of star wars cards. He just put a bunch of mana cards in sleeves then printed out the star wars paper pieces and slid them in front of the mana. The cards were pretty funny if your into star wars. Han Solo has first strike. Greedo's effect is (all creatures have first strike against greedo) pretty funny

Hey professor, great video. I'm using cube tutor as a starting off point for a pauper cube. How do you feel about multicolor cycle cards for balance ex Sootwalkers/Mudbrawler Raiders... Etc each have the same power/toughnesd same 4 converted mana cost, each can't be blocked by the creatures color foils. But certainly some are more beneficial than others. Or Llanowar Knight & Galina's Knight with pro black and red respectively. Would be better than Yavimaya Barbarian & Vodalian Zombie with pro blue and green. They're part of a cycle. Is the cycle itself unbalanced with what colors do enough to justify using just some of them? I'd really like opinions from anyone that took enough time to read this.
    Thanks in advance.

Cube is fun, but I don't like changing my cube after I build it. So I built a "limited block" cube - core sets only cards. Since MtG discontinued core sets this lets my cube stay the same, while still having some very nice and powerful cards.
The only problem is that there is no multicolor cards, but the colors combine well.

For a junior level course this is not very advanced. I'm not saying that the information wasn't helpful. There just wasn't enough of it. Imagine if your English lectures were only 7 minutes. Even if you tried to condense a regular lecture and cut out any interaction between you and your students you couldn't do it in 7 minutes...

Funny that you mention "upgrading" to Dragon Hunter... I just cut him from my cube last week because I thought he was too narrow.

fyiicheckforspies Unless the cube has something going for Savanna Lion being a Cat (tribal synergy, or at least flavor with Ajani, Brimaz, etc.), then Dragon Hunter is strictly better if the cube has A. Some human or warrior theme or B. At least one dragon.
You could of course upgrade from Dragon Hunter to something else that better fits whatever your cube is doing.
(E.g. Accorder Paladin, Blade of the Sixth Pride, Daring Skyjek, Dromoka Warrior, Oreskos Swiftclaw, Spirit of the Labyrinth, Wandering Champion -- All of these are 2/1's for 1W , some with extra abilities, and some of which also happen to be cats)

Viron Darkstar Sorry but I'm not sure why you're comparing Dragon Hunter (a 2/1 for W) to a bunch of 3/1s for 1W. Maybe you're thinking of another card? I actually cut Dragon Hunter for Loam Lion.

fyiicheckforspies 1. Momentary lapse thinking the CMC was 2 for some reason. 2. Could still be fine coming out a turn later if the cube has a lot of good creatures with 3 toughness.
