I think this scene is honestly a depiction of a deeper spiritual connection than most Catholics would care to admit. When inner frustrations against the workings of the universe take hold, we try to divert it to the littlest things...the people we think annoy us to our limits, the amount of time we supposedly lack, and the ruling of authority which adds weight upon weight. Sometimes, if festered long enough, the fear we harbor at lashing out in front of others turns into fear of expressing yourself or trusting them at all. President B may not hold an ultimate judgement of his beliefs at this moment, but it is a crucial moment for him to ask "why?" and "what am I supposed to do now?".

Why I love this scene so much is because it’s probably one of the best depictions of a devout man having a true crisis of faith.
I’m not religious, but this dialogue is so good because you can relate to how Bartlett is feeling in this moment. To devote your whole life to something, and because of one mistake you see the threads begin to unravel. Was it worth it? Was I ever worthy or was I just using this thing as an armor to shield myself from the truth?
This is why Aaron Sorkin is one of the greatest modern day writers.

The only problem with this scene is that it is incomplete. There is another scene later where the President is alone in the Oval Office, where the phrase "give me numbers" comes into play. You can't focus on this scene's downward spiral without showing the start of the rise.
Of course, to show that scene, you need to see another. Eventually, it comes to the point that you need to see the entire episode as a whole in order to get the full effect. Definitely one of my favorite episodes!

It was for this episode that the producers submitted his name for Emmy consideration that season. While he was nominated as Lead Actor, it's a travesty that he didn't win. A friend of mine was an extra in this episode; she was one of the reporters at the subsequent press conference. She said it would have been a grueling and tedious experience, except that Martin Sheen would come over and talk with them while new camera shots were being set up, etc. And they were all blown away when he sat down and had lunch with them, telling many anecdotes but also asking questions about >their< lives.

I recently lost a close family member to COVID-19, he died today in the morning. After I prayed to god that he helped him beat the disease, and I feel exactly like Martin Sheen in this scene. I feel so much anger and disrespect for asking and pleading to God to help him survive, and he just took him away from us and his son.

I am so sorry. I've stood in a church and screamed at the almighty for the loss of friends and family. I truly hope it gets better for you. I know I still have that anger.

And if God took away every misery , every pain, then tell me - how would be become stronger in ourselves, never having dealt with that pain in the first place, how would we know the difference between good and evil, God having taken away all evil. We would be empty automatons, knowing nothing of our selves and mans capability.

    1. Pause this video.

    4. Play both at the same time.
