    The underground bits of the Northern City line give me the creeps. It's like some dystopian version of LU and it always looks abandoned. Never seems to be busy either.

    If i'm not mistaken, there is an abandoned platform 7 at norwood junction, and if you look very closely down the line to east croydon, you can see light poles with NSE colours on it.

    Most of the white train car stop boards on platforms out of Marylebone are old NSE infrastructure with a thin blue sticker covering the NSE stripe at the bottom of the sign, there are a few stations where the sticker has been peeled away and you can see the grey, red and blue logo.

    I've seen a Network SouthEast livery AND branded Class 86 in Willesden Traction Maintenance Depot in 2013, but not sure where it is now, Purley Oaks also has a tall NSE sign on the entrance and finally Selhurst Depot has a NSE container on the line coming from Norwood Junction.

    Folkestone East station has not been open for years . You pass it on the train between Folkestone central and Dover priory. It still has the logo on the Station sign on the platform and has NSE benches and lamp posts. A few stations I've been at like Tonbridge and Orpington still have the old NSE flapper board clocks but painted in blue but the red paint is still visible underneath. Also I've seen NSE painted lamp posts at Farningham Road and bromley South.

    I went through Marylebone last month (Nov 2018), and the NSE branding we see here (ticket office, etc), is still in situ. The station features some attractive “period detail” - presumably Chiltern Railways wanted to offer more than one period?

    I think they may have run trains as far as Manchester from Watford as I'm certain I remember an NSE branded train arriving at Manchester Piccadilly in 1988 in the days when you could travel slowly on a stopping service to London.

    • @wurly1
      @wurly1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There were no Network South East services that ran to Manchester, but Class 309's were transferred to work on regional railways services around Manchester and kept their NSE liveries for a time.
      There were also some rail tours that took class 309's to far flung places...

    Is the Intercity Swallow not as recognisable then??

    • @CallingAllStations
      @CallingAllStations  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree IC Swallow had an incredibly strong and well loved image, but it was more a service type whereas NSE was an entire region. BR had much less success with some of their other regional re-brands such as the lesser known Network NorthWest and some of the subsequent identities in Manchester and Liverpool.

    Those NSE diamonds on the platforms of the Waterloo & City Line served a useful purpose - they marked where the doors would be when the train stopped, so you could stand in the right place. At least, that was the case on the old 1940 stock. Seems like they don't match up so well with the 1992 stock...

    Can't they do something constructive with this abandoned bit of old LU route?
    Why don't they convert it to a tram line running from Watford Junction to Rickmansworth via WHS - utilising most of the existing track and only diverging away from it and onto a brand new route towards Rickmansworth?
    I realise this may be considered frivolous in these current hard times.. but after this (in say five years time) surely they could do something like this?
    It would connect Rickmansworth with Watford directly (something the Underground doesn't do), plus it would bring life back to much of the abandoned Croxley Green route which would be a good thing. There'd be a tram stop outside Watford FC too.
    There is probably a bus service that connects these two towns - I don't know, as I don't live in the area. This bus route could be scrapped and replaced by this new tram route. What's not to like?
    It would take more people than a bus would, and would free up the roads around there.
    I don't understand why it's just being left to rot. We have totally become a 'can't do' country - finding all manner of excuses as to why this can't be done..... cost..... NIMBYS etc etc. It's just nuts. There is infrastructure already in place......not being used!!
