    Really like the relaxed style of this video, combined with the good weather and the interesting subject matter. Looking at the history of the railways on the island it's sad to see how much they've been cut back. Can't help feeling that they should have kept a link to Newport and Cowes given how populous these areas are.

      I am going there soon and there is new plans for the Island line to extend south to Ventnor and back to Newport & East Cowes but not Cowes there is now talks for some new 2019 stock to go over once built and will still have the same feel but electricated but that would be for the Ryde - East Cowes branch and not the ryde - ventnor branch

    I live five mins walk from Shanklin station. Oddly enough, the train is faster and cheaper to ride than the bus, especially if you want to go to Ryde.
    There is talk of extending the line through to Newport again, as well as potentially Wroxall or even Ventnor! Our MP raised this request in parliament recently. Most of the land the tracks ran on has been sold and developed, so there is some negotiations to be done if this will come to pass.
    Even better if we can get steam trains on the lines, that will bring the tourists!!
    Here's hoping..

    Very interesting video. Could you explain the costs involved of running the railway between Shanklin & Ventnor please? They've obviously got to maintain the track but did they rent the land (is this a major ongoing cost for a railway?); I'm trying to understand how it was cheaper to buy a fleet of buses (or maybe only one bus) to enable the line to be closed between Shanklin & Ventnor.
    Likewise why would converting the entire line to a tramway be cost effective, especially since trams need Overhead Line Equipment to be installed (unworkable bearing in mind the tunnel(s)).

    • @nsuro80
      @nsuro80 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beeching wanted to close the whole line but compromised after protests. The section from Shanklin to Ventnor however, was not spared as the cost of upkeep of the St Boniface tunnel was wrongly used as an excuse to close it (Southern Water had to upkeep the tunnel anyway for their own use). Ventnor has never recovered from losing it's railway.
      Tramways have been suggested as a way of resurrecting the lines to Newport and Cowes rather than replacing the existing railway.

    • @michaelhearn3052
      @michaelhearn3052 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nsuro80 Not strictly true. The budget set to electrify the line was set at £500k. This was only enough to electrify down to Shanklin to include all civil works, conductor rails, materials, the ex LUL tube trains (Modified) and three 33kV/650V DC substations plus their 33kV OHL connections. To electrify down to Ventnor would need an additional substation plus connections. Additionally BR was aware from its passenger figures and ticket sales, that the main footfall was at Shanklin and not Ventnor, as the former was where most of the Hotels and B&Bs were. (yes, I accept that there were also some, Hotels and B&Bs at Ventnor) This IIRC was the argument that BR put forward in its negotiations with the IoW council at the time. The latter wanted BR to fund the electrification down to Ventnor, i.e. keep the line open, and was of the opinion that it did not want to burden its ratepayers with additional costs, the bulk of which were pensioners anyway. BR were of the opinion that the Council could provide some funding towards it. Irrespective of the arguments the line terminated at Shanklin. I would add that the B&B owners and hoteliers in Ventnor did see a reduction in their bookings as a result of the lines closure. Had the situation been the other way around i.e. more passengers alighting at Ventnor, then a solution would have been found. However, the IoW scheme was attached onto the main £16 million Bournemouth electrification scheme, at the time, and did not have the best brains planning it. TAlking to NR engineers at the time who had to work on the line, electrically it was a nightmare, as there was no BR owned 33kV CBs a their subs; all switching had to be done on the SEB 33kV OHL Network.

    It will be a sad day when the faithful 1938 stock are withdrawn from the island line. They have done well for their 81 years of service.
    I remember travelling on them from The Angel station at when I was a child. I also remember the one time I rode on one on the Isle of Wight line.
    I also remember them also being used on the Bakerloo line using them a couple of times.
    Perhaps some of the stock could be preserved on the Epping to Ongar heritage railway.
    Perhaps London transport could run some on the circle/metropolitain line as a heritage line like they do with the Route master buses.

    The 1938 stock has served the Island Line well but they really are on their last legs (or wheels) now. The planned rebuilt D78 stock/D-Trains will be a perfect replacement for the time-expired 1938 stock and at least with the planned reintroduction of a passing loop at Brading it will allow for an even 30-minute train service to connect at Ryde Pier Head with the passenger ferries from Portsmouth. And the modernisation of Ryde Pier is well overdue as a scruffy and rusty Victorian pier with scruffy-looking trains isn't really a good advert for those travelling to the Isle of Wight for the first time. Interesting as Southern Vectis has a modern bus fleet fitted with low floors, free Wi-Fi and USB sockets yet the Island Line train fleet dates from when The Beano first came out and when Adolf Hitler decided to invade Poland.

    Why don’t they extend a branch off to go to Newport? If you could get a train from the ferry to Newport wouldn’t that be better?

    • @michaelhearn3052
      @michaelhearn3052 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was a decision by Newport CC not to have the railway in a heritage form back in the town after closure. As a consequence of that there are the annual levels of summer road congestion that occur, in Newport and Cowes.
