If fan is actually larger, it means it can get quieter. Thats physics. Larger fans are better because they can spin slower in order to move same amount of air as smaller fans.
That's not an accident. They have a larger fan, more efficient APU, bigger heatplate and thicker heatpipes. They went right out and said that they wanted to reduce the noise and they managed to make the OLED run cooler AND quieter at the same time.
This is so good for a mid-life cycle refresh. Minor, important changes, but keeping the performance within the reach of the original so you don't split your playerbase and make it harder for devs. Seriously, though, I wish Valve's approach to hardware making (with repairability and providing great value for money) was the mantra of more electronics companies. Kudos! (also, Valve, where is your stand alone Index successor?!)
You said the new display is larger at 6.4 inches compared to the original 7 inch screen… but I forgive you because you mandated to reference my favorite dessert in a tech review.
Don't know about anybody else but I would not welcome a smaller Steam Deck part of what's so good about the steam deck is its full size sticks and its dedicated ergonomic handles. I think its size is one of its best features and is a big part of what makes it so comfortable compared to the switch or any other handheld.
Great video @Engadget but to add some clarification on the battery/Hades: Hades is actually bugged on Steam Deck. The default CPU governor pegs the CPU to max wattage, so using powertools or a TDP limit to limit the CPU power draw actually boosts the battery life on the LCD Deck from ~2.5 hours to 5 or so. I would imagine with the same tweaks, the OLED model would get close to 7 or 8. Hades is not the only game this happens on. I recommend all Deck users download powertools and set the CPU Governor to "Powersave"
