    Hi Marc, I am torn between the Cordona Prestige and the Babila ... what are your thoughts? Will the flow control make that much of a difference in taste and control. Also the Babila does espresso macchiato (the Prestige could probably do it with a custom setting). Milk temp between the two? Pros and Cons of the two? thanks!

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Hi Sam, Thanks for the question. If you switch between espresso beverages and regular larger cups of coffee the flow control on the Babila does make a difference. On the flip side the Cadorna Prestige does highly programmable Americanos. At the end of the day the Americano may equal or surpass the quality of a flow controlled longer coffee made on the Babila but that depends on your personal taste preferences. I have used the Babila as my daily driver in the studio for ~2 years. I do like it. But, I love the UI of the Prestige. Also Prestige can flip the order of milk and espresso prep by beverage. For a proper espresso macchiato you want the espresso made first followed by the milk. The Prestige can do that if you start with a flat white, cortado or cafe au lait and customize as you mention. Customizing is super easy to do and you can save 4 versions of any customized drink although you cannot rename it. Water reservoir is slightly larger in the the Prestige as is the milk carafe. The Babila has a quick automatic steam cleaning of the carafe after doing a milk drink. Just push the milk spout over and steam is sent through the handle and into the drip tray. The Prestige does a quick clean as well but it a short burst of hot water through frothing components in the carafe. IMO The Cadorna Prestige has a lot to offer. The UI and flipped milk prep are big features. Hope that helps!

    I HAVE THE GAGGIA ACADEMIA. I bought it in 2012, and it's still going strong. I've done a few repairs to it over the years, but it's been a great machine. And we use the heck out of it. Probably the best $1600 I ever spent. If these machines are as durable as that machine, they'll have a winner.

      Hi Marcel, Thanks for sharing your long-term experience with the Gaggia Accademia. It's a fine machine and was my daily driver for a few years. Guessing you've made 1000's maybe tens of thousands of drinks in 8 years of use. With a nearly identical internal brewing I'm confident the Cadorna machines will be just a s durable! And the UI is a huge upgrade for Gaggia.

    I'm looking to buy a super automatic machine. Looking at the drinks available between the milk & prestige I see it's mainly the XL options for macchiato & cappuccino you get with the prestige. Are these just larger sizes of the regular drinks? I usually drink from a large travel mug, I think about 20 oz

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi ml5, Yes, they are larger sizes of the regular drinks. The XL options max out at about 14oz using ~3oz of coffee and 11oz of frothed milk. Depending on your preferences, you could go with the XL versions or make 2 regular sizes into a single cup.
      Hope that helps!

    I’m trying to decide between a Gaggia Cadorno Milk and a Breville Impress Touch. Which would you recommend? I think the Gaggia makes better espresso but that’s just me.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi jm, The Gaggia Cadorna is much simpler to use as it's an automatic bean to cup machine. Press a button and the machine does it all. The Breville is technically considered a semi-automatic machine. You grind into a portafilter and then move it to the group and brew. More user involvement with that one. If you know what you're doing the Breville is capable of producing better espresso - but it takes some knowledge and effort to get there and produce consistent results.

    Hi Marc, I am ready to order my first espresso machine and I am torn between the Cadorna Milk and Magenta Prestige. The primary difference for me is creating separate user profiles in the Cadorna and getting the built in carafe on the Magenta Prestige. My wife and I have wildly different preferences for coffee taste. I am aware I can have both with the Cadorna Prestige; however, I would like to stay within a budget of around $1,000. Comparing the Barista Plus to the Prestige, would you get better froth by manually steaming milk? How well does the Prestige's automatic milk froth compare?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi DV, Thanks for the question. If one has the skill (or the patience to practice/learn) the Barista Plus with manual frothing gives one the capability of producing latte art quality froth. Froth from the Prestige and Milk models is very good. Two keys on those models are convenience of one-touch barista quality milk drinks with no skill/effort required and flipping the order of espresso and milk prep to best suit the drink being made.

    Hi Marc, I love your reviews and insights. Trying to determine the best machine for me. I just bought the academia, it’s great. However in reviewing the prestige cordona I’m wondering if it’s hotter? The custom profiles and more drinks (including Americano) are swaying me. Also I can see customizing by ounces would be easy for our cups. Hot hot coffee is super important to us. Love your thoughts, thx.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike, Thanks for the kind comment. As I mentioned the Cadorna, which I'm currently using daily for delicious Americanos is one of the hotter machines I've used. Depending on your local variables you can expect temps of ~185-192F measured directly out of the spouts. In cup temps will be lower. Machines brew internally at ~200F at max temp setting and there's some cooling as it makes its way from brewing to the spouts and more cooling in the cup. One tactic for hotter coffee is to pre-heat your cup before brewing. For those who want it super hot 20-30 seconds in the microwave after brewing will get you there.

    Hi Marc. Great review. We have had a Valesca for several years and a Syncrony Logic before that. Both have worked great. The Valesca has been bullet-proof. We always use the filter and descale as required using the Gaggia descaling solution. Lately the incidents of losing prime and water leaks have become more frequent. It always recovers, but fooling with the machine takes time. Is the Cordona the replacement for the Valesca? Seems like it and some parts are even recognizable. Is six or seven years about when we should look for a replacement? Thanks.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey John, Thanks for the kind comment, question and report on your Syncrony Logic and Velasca! Yes, the Cadorna is an improved version of the Velasca with nicer UI and more drink options. 6-7 years could be a reasonable replacement time frame but depends more on number of drinks made, how diligent you're been with maintenance and how willing you are to fool with the machine. If you're north of 15,000 brew cycles I'm inclined to call it a good run and go for an upgrade. But even at that use level most issues are DIY repairable if you're handy and willing. If you got the machine from us our Tech Support can help with that. If you choose to replace the Cadorna is a good choice. Not sure what your budget is or desired features but I'll mention the updated Gaggia Accademia. It's Gaggia's top machine. Makes the best espresso and Americanos I've ever had from an automatic bean to cup. Also has a whole new range of milk drinks available - it can even vary milk froth density on a per drink basis. @@Wholelattelovepage Thanks for your response, Marc. Yes, we bought all of our machines from you folks over about 15 years, and I regularly order the descaling solution and filters. Is there a way to tell how many brewing cycles have been run? The real reason to upgrade is the putzy factor. My wife works as a provider at Mayo Clinic and needs a good cup of coffee (or two or three) before she heads to the hospital at 5:30 a.m. I don't want her to have to fool with the Velasca when she is trying to get out the door, nor do I want her getting me up to fix it. I also don't want her to deal with the occasional overnight water leak all over the counter and floor. Her coffee experience as she leaves for a very stressful and long (12 hour) workday should be uneventful and enjoyable.
      What about the Magenta? We really never do milk drinks. Only really good coffee. I would do Americanos if we had a machine that would do them (Velasca will do them, but manually as I understand it). Magenta has a lower price, holds more water, and has a larger dreg box and drip tray (than the Velasca). Only concern I have is refilling the water and bean hopper. The Velasca sits under the cabinets on our counter top. Currently has about 8" of clearance. We filled the Syncrony Logic by removing and replacing the tank. Maybe that would work on the Magenta? And, how would the Velasca do in our RV? It would have to be emptied of water and secured safely, but are they up to the vibration and movement as we go down the road?
      I am researching at this point, but I do know we love our super automatic Gaggias and have come to rely on them every day. If it makes sense to upgrade, we will do it. I will check out the Accademia, but they are pricey. Kind of like Escalade vs. Silverado. I have owned three Escalades and they are terrific. Now I drive a Silverado because I just don't need the bling and the pickup is more useful and just as comfortable (and costs less.)

    In regards to a former question, I asked about cleaning and I am more concerned about the descaling cleaning as I have not gotten a display
    from the machine to perform this yet and I have had this for about 18 months. The manual says that it will signal when this is to be done so should I wait?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stacey, So long as you initially setup the machine properly by testing your water with the included water hardness test strip and entering the test results in the machine it should alert you to descale when it's needed. If you have very soft water and also use a water filter in the reservoir it's possible it may never need descaling or be in the 1000's of brew cycles before it's needed.

    I have a question in regard to the maintenance and cleaning of the Prestige Milk. Is there any issue for using hot water and the spray option when doing the weekly rinsing of the brew unit?
    Just not sure if the hot water and extra pressure of using the spray would cause any issues with that part of the maintenance.
    Also, I have had my Prestige for over a year and have not had the unit display any cleaning as of yet. Should I be worried about this or just go ahead and initiate some cleaning anyway??

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stacey, I would avoid using the spray option and use room temperature water to rinse the brew unit when out of the machine. If you're too aggressive with spray and water temperature you may remove lubrication from the moving parts of the brew unit.
      I would go ahead and do the cleaning monthly using the gaggia cleaning tablets as described on page 28 of the manual. Here's a link to the manual if needed: support.wholelattelove.com/hc/en-us/article_attachments/1500002384522/Cadorna-Prestige-Manual.pdf

Just checked the counter and I'm at about 2,500 total drinks on the machine. ~600 of those were straight espresso. Apprently my favorite is the Americano at 1,077T on the the Cadorna does pre-wet the coffee prior to full pressure brewing - it's always on. Just not controllable as it is on the Velasca. I am wondering if these machines follow the "golden rule" of espresso extraction (once grind size for the particular bean is dialled in): 1:2/2.5 extraction and extraction time of 20-30 seconds?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Darryl, You are welcome and thanks for the comment and question. Due to their design they do not follow golden rule extraction timing. Max coffee dose in the Cadorna is ~11g. If making a double espresso on the Cadorna 2 grind cycles happen automatically. Total the times for the 2 extractions and it'll be in the ball park of golden rule.

    Both machines normally work without attaching the milk tube / the carafe?
    Can you tell if it's possible to do froth milk with non-dairy milks? (ie almond, oat, coconut, rice, etc)

    How do the Milk and Prestige handle cleaning the milk pathway?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi sb, Thanks for the question. It's the same on both the Milk and Prestige models. Both have Quick Clean and Deep Clean functions. After making a milk drink you are given the option on-screen to run the Quick Clean function. You can ignore that and screen returns to normal if you'll be making another milk drink. The Quick Clean only take a few seconds to run and rinses the frothing components with hot water. On the Milk model you are advised to put the milk pickup tube in a glass of water for the Quick Clean. On the Prestige models that is not required. For the Deep Clean remove the carafe or milk supply, rinse, add water and small amount of milk cleaning solution. Re-attach the carafe or milk supply press a button and the cycle runs automatically. Detergent, water and steam are run through the frothing components. for a minute or so. Then remove milk supply, rinse and fill with clean water. Re-attach, press button and water and steam rinse the frothing components for a minute or so. Whole process takes under 5 minutes and requires your attention 2 times. Hope that helps!

    I just made my first cappuccino on the Cadorna milk. I did a quick clean, instructions say to put the tube in water but the function doesn't suck up water to quick clean the tube. What's the point of putting the tube in water if it won't rinse it out? I opted to use the milk froth function to rinse out the tube. Aside from this I'm loving my Cadorna milk

      Hi Elena, I know we've talked before when you were deciding on a machine. So thanks for coming back with the feedback! Happy to hear you are loving your machine. I think the manual may be a bit vague. Using the Quick Clean the machine puts hot water through the frothing component. If you do the Deep Clean it will suck up water through the tube. For the deep clean you can/should use a milk system cleaner added to water in carafe like Urnex Rinza: www.wholelattelove.com/products/urnex-rinza-milk-frother-cleaner

    Is there a list available for liquid volume ranges (in oz or ml) per each drink for the Codorna Prestige? Do the espresso/milk drinks have 1-4 oz range for the espresso itself? And what are the milk ranges for those drinks? From the video, it looks like the Americano ranges are 1-4oz for espresso with 1-4oz water, is that correct? I'd love to see another grinder video. I'm lost in the decision of flat or conical burrs. How does the Ceado e37s and the e37k differ besides burr shape? And why does the conical grinders not come in a titanium burr version? So many questions...

      Hi Heron, If using for espresso grinding go with flat burrs. There has been some debate in past re. flat vs. conical. But a huge majority of high-end espresso grinders are using flat burrs. Even at the lower-end of grinding manufacturers who were using conical have switched to flat.

Semi-automatic machines are capable of better quality but producing it requires some skill, effort and knowledge on the part of the user. I'm having a hard time getting good flat whites out of this. I played with several settings but I'm no coffee expert so I can't figure out what to play with (though I've certainly tried many different things so far). What would you suggest for a flat white (I add a bit of maple syrup for some sweetness), I'm using Lavazza Super Crema for now. thanks! I had it at double shot 1.18oz espresso, grind setting 2, bean strength 5. I think it might be too bitter I have a lingering after taste

      @Wholelattelovepage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi JC, Let me see if I can help. This may sound counter intuitive but I would increase the espresso volume to over 2oz. and drop the strength. At a strength setting of 5 you are making the 1.18oz of espresso from ~23g of ground coffee! That's essentially a triple shot. Try a 3 for strength and increasing the espresso volume. I'd stick with your current grind setting. Hope that helps!

      Hi Yk, Sorry to hear your Accademia failed. Sounds like you really enjoyed it! The programmable automatic control of milk density in 3 levels is a key and very rare feature. Sorry the Cadorna Prestige does not have that feature. Still available on the Accademia. A few more expensive Jura machines can manually adjust between steamed and frothed milk. A couple of really high-end $$ Jura machines like the Giga 6 do it automatically with programmable amounts of each type in a single drink.

    Hi Marc, I'm torn between the Jura E8 Touch and Cadorna Prestige. How would you rate the difference in espresso quality, milk frothing quality plus temperature and very important as well: the daily/weekly/monthly cleaning effort required of the milk system.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi MB, Here's a link to side by side spec comparison with current pricing for those machines: www.wholelattelove.com/pages/compare?products=MjMxMDgwMjIxMDg3MCw0NTY4Mzk4MDM3MDQ2
      My thoughts...
      Espresso quality: I've used both machines a lot. Currently using a Cadorna Prestige as daily driver here in the studio and I've had a Jura Micro 90 as daily driver at home for more than a year. The Micro 90 uses essentially the same brew system as the E8. I have no personal preference on the espresso quality. I've used the same beans in both machines and get similar results.
      Milk frothing: Temperatures of milk are similar on both. Depending on your source milk temp out of the spout you'll get temps of 125F/52C - 140/60C. That's what all super-autos are tuned to produce as milk is at its sweetest at those temps. One thing The E8 has is the ability to change from steamed milk with little to no air added to a frothed milk with air added using the lever on the frothing device.
      Milk system cleaning: Here's a link to the E8 manual describing milk system cleaning: us.jura.com/-/media/global/pdf/manuals-na/Home/E8/E8-v18/download_manual_e8_e80_na.pdf?la=en&hash=5372676AF568FC3D78474ECE87DE3AB9C2F49235&em_force=true

      Hi George, Thanks for watching and for your question. I've used both the Babila and Cadorna Prestige for extended periods as my daily driver in the studio. Currently using the Cadorna and loving it. IMO it's a more modern machine with far more drink options and more capable and beautiful user interface. It does things the Babila cannot like flip the milk prep order depending on the drink being made, true flat white and one of my favorites a one-touch Americano. To get those capabilities on competing machines costs a lot more. IMO the Babila is oriented more to those seeking more barista level control of the espresso brewing afforded by the flow control on the spouts. Also has the manual steam wand for weekend baristas who want to froth to latte art quality or for those who prefer a hotter (too hot IMO) milk froth. The Babila is a taller machine so do check your clearances and keep in mind beans and water go in the top of the Babila. Hope that helps!

I’m the only one in the house that uses the Classic and a Prestige would get much more use. I was looking at the Profitec 600 machine but this might be a better option for our house. Hi MG, Thanks for the question. The Classic is capable of better espresso than a super-auto. But as you're likely aware that takes some knowledge, skill and effort. I have a similar situation in my home. I'm the only one who uses a semi-auto on a regular basis. Of course others drink and enjoy what I make for them. If I'm not around the wife and college age daughter only use the super-auto. I use a Cadorna Prestige as well for a couple Americanos every morning and the wife does straight coffee while the kid likes the lattes. There is a sacrifice of potential quality. But the consistency and convenience go way up!

It's one of my favorites and was my daily driver in the studio for a number of years. It's a very solid machine. I love it for the flow control. After that I ran a Babila for a couple of years. Essentially the same machine as the Accademia. After this video I switched out the Babila for a Cadorna Prestige. It does do a noticeably hotter milk. I believe that's in response to people wanting that. Personally I prefer my milk on the cooler side. More apparent sweetness in cooler milk. But, I do know many want it hotter. Well trained baristas don't like going hot when manually steaming due to loss of sweetness. But customer demands will influence manufacturers over time. It's my opinion hotter drink demands come from those (especially in US market) who've had many years of straight piping hot coffee and cream and then been introduced to specialty beverages like latte, cappuccino, etc. They expect those drinks to be as hot as the straight coffee they're so accustomed to. If a bit hotter is what you prefer you should have it. With your Accademia you can always get there using the manual wand. Of course you give up the push button convenience. But maybe consider something like the Cadorna if you want to keep that. Cheers!

    Hi Marc. Thanks for the videos. I'm looking at either the Cadorna Prestige or the Milk. Things that sway me toward the Prestige: additional milk drinks (I mostly drink coffee/ americano, but am the occasional flat white/ cortado drinker). What sways me toward the Cadorna Milk: the matte black colour scheme. I haven't seen these machines in person, only online, but I like the colour of the Milk over the Prestige. Do you have any thoughts on designs? How they hold up over time? For example scratches etc. Also, if I was to go with the Cadorna Milk, would I be able to program certain drinks so that they turn out like a Flat White or Cortado would on the Prestige? Would there be any other major differences between the two that would sway me either way? Thanks again.

      Hi John, Thanks for the questions. At their heart the machines are nearly identical so espresso/coffee quality is the same. Big difference in milk systems and number of milk drinks. Attachable self rinsing carafe vs. milk reservoir with tube. Milk maintenance higher and ease of use lower on the Milk model. On the Milk model the cafe au lait could be programmed to something closer to a cortado. As to flat white the Prestige does double grind cycle for a real double espresso. On the Milk model you could make a single shot then program a cafe au lait to make a similar drink. On finishes... The Milk is typical plastic on the front while the Prestige has a more robust finish with a clear coat over the plastic so potentially more durable. In person, the clear coat type finish looks higher-end than the plain plastic of the Milk model. Either finish could scratch if abused. Other subtle difference is a metal surface on the cup warming tray above/behind the display of the Prestige while that area is plastic on the Milk. Hope that helps!

    I'm tossing up between the cardona prestige and anima prestige.
    I'm mainly a cappuccino drinker and main priority is just convenience which both seems to offer. What do you think?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi NS, Thanks for the question. Both machines are convenient. If you will only ever drink cappuccino then the Anima Prestige is the way to go on value basis. If you might do other drinks the Cadorna has a lot of features to like: Much nicer user interface, flips milk/espresso prep order depending on the drink being made, true Americano, better control of drink parameters and excellent flat white. Hope that helps!

    I have Gaggia Platinum Vision, it was nice but I suffered too much form Cockroaches, they love these beans to cup machines, i have been forced to de-assemble it to its smaller part to clean and sanitise it, once tested again, i left it until full dry and kept it at the store forever, never used it again, and shifted to manual machine, i am using Breville infuser and Breville Smart grinder pro.
    Will this Cadorna series still have the Cockroaches invasion problem like all other “beans to cup” machines?

      Hi KAA, Well... I know the roaches are attracted to warm places and maybe the electronics. If me I'd do my best get rid of the roaches. If bad infestation they're likely to go after similar devices so can't say they'd be less likely to invade a Cadorna.

      @@Wholelattelovepage they only invaded the coffee machine, once cleaned and kept it dry, they disappeared for good. I wish that automatic coffee machines designers re-consider its current design that allows for this disaster.
      Practically, the current standard design has lots of wet/damp areas full of coffee and it is full of air vents inviting them.

    Hi Marc, can the Cordona milk and the prestige froth milk for latte art ?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi AN, Thanks for the question. Not really. Their froth tends to be just a bit airier than the super fine froth created by manual frothing. I've pulled it off with automatically frothed milk by pouring the froth between a couple of pitchers before pouring into espresso. That helps break up the bubbles a bit and creates a uniform texture.

    Hi Marc, thanks for the great reviews.
    I'm very close to decision & looks like the Cadorna Prestige is my pick too, but my last 2 questions are:
    1. is the espresso by Cadorna would taste the same as from a semi-automatic machine like Bezera or Rocket espresso machines around $2000 as well?
    2. Can Cadorna make a real microfoam like or at least close to the semi-automatic machines? and if it is close, is the foam from Cadorna can compete or at par with Accademia or Babila?
    3. Extra question, since Gaggia is a Philips company, how do you compare the Cadorna vs Philips 5400 or Saeco Pico Baristo Carafe (I found the 5400 screen & AUI are the nicest so far)?
    Thanks in advance & hope to get the decision this weekend so I can order the espresso machine this weekend as well :-))

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi JG, You are welcome for the reviews and thanks for the questions!
      1. Semi-automatic machines are capable of producing a higher quality espresso. They can use much larger coffee doses and give the user more control of extraction variables. Getting the best from a semi-auto requires skill and knowledge. Super-autos provide consistent convenience.
      2. Manual frothing can produce a finer microfoam than automatically frothed milk. Again, that requires some level of skill of the person frothing. The Cadorna's froth is relatively fine but not latte art quality fine and froth density out of the machine is not adjustable. The Acaademia and Babila both have a manual wand in addition to the automatic milk carafe. Their manual wands can froth to latte art quality.
      3. I have not used the Phillips or Saeco machines so cannot offer an opinion on them. Of the 3 comapnies Gaggia is the only one which makes all their products in Italy.
      Hope tht helps!

      @@0ptimalbeat At the end, I got the Philips 5400, it had more drinks than Cadorna & with newer look & AUI & easier to clean the milk holder & brewing system
      I'm very happy with the 5400 so far (have it for 3 months) with good espresso & cappuccino/latte drinks
      My son got the lelit and the difference between the foam is huge, where Lelit get a real creamy microfoam while no supper-automatic machine can make...none
      Also the espresso is even to a specialty cafe shop, while the supper-automatic is good espresso but would never reach the same level

      14g seems very light for a double as I use 18g. You may be having issues with your 3 way solenoid valve . Check to see if water is dispensing out the valve when you finish your shot. Back flushing is necessary to keep your valve clean and working properly.

      Hi James, First, Thanks to @Anthony for chiming in. As he mentioned it may be related to 3-way solenoid valve but smaller dose in a larger basket can cause that or combo of smaller dose and partial obstructions adding up to wetter pucks. Have you been keeping the shower screen clean in the group head? Backflushing with a product like Cafiza? Descaling (if needed on schedule? It may be a bunch of little things adding up. Check the shower screen and do regular backflushing to keep the 3-way solenoid circuit clean. If you continue to have issue please call our tech support at 585-924-7170 and they'd be happy to advise.
