I know I'm watching this in 2022, but it's crazy how out of date the section on Internet videos is, it's like a time capsule from a completely different era.
It's really weird how I can't listen to anyone (say the Scottish guys) remembering old TV shows on this show without immediately thinking of Barry Shitpeas - "There was this show like..."
I also love the way they put ABBA, played by what sounds like a band of mexican troubadors, over images of someone getting asphixiated by clingfilm... whoever selects the music for this program is a comic genius
What really sums up Brooker's humour is the cynical monologue at the end with the deerhunter theme edited under the words. I get the feeling he that he needs this show to vent his own anger at the world and esp tv.
Ooooooh that's weird. I randomly decided to watch some old 24 clips. Then had my nostalgia fest and decided to watch Screenwipe and thought I'll watch some of series 3. And clicked on this one. Which features 24 :-) TH-cam algorithms are in sync with my brain!
Lindybeige and Charlie Brooker are my two favourite people. Curse you, Brooker, for forcing me to choose with your vulgar dismissal of what I'm sure would have been a fascinating dance routine/magic act/whatever!
when he talks about video games making you cry, I'd say that some games immerse you so heavily into characters that some of the best can make you feel deep empathy for the characters. If anything i feel closer to the player character whose actions i'm taking than a character on a screen i'm watching passively
yep. I cried at the end of Walking Dead(the Telltale Adventure) Season One & Two. At the end of Season One, when the game crossed over to "Clementine" and you had to either shoot "Lee" or not, I did. And, the end of Season Two, I let "Kenny" die. Oh yeah, I cried at the end of "The Last Of Us" too.
I've often thought the ratings system seems incredibly flimsy the way it is done, surely in this day and age they're is a much more accurate way to know who is watching what (there probably is since this was 13 years ago)
1 byte = 1 number between 0-255. You could, in theory, use Binary Coded Decimal to get 2 numbers to each byte, but this was never done. A phone number in the format 0XXXX XXX XXX would take up 11 bytes including leading 0, 10 without.
Love looking back on youtube now, 4 million people? In modern terms thats fuck all. Its all so primitive as well, hard to believe this was just a few years ago.
Gia thingy is married to Brian Cox the bloke who stands atop hills waving his bum at the camera while dumbing down cosmology, so no wonder she is so bored with life she just sits at home agrandising anonymous and inconsequential video blogs.
I've never in my life met anyone who is part of a ratings register household. Have to be pretty bored in life to sign up to that. Unless he didn't have a childhood Kermode is talking shit.
10:55 Except that since this was made there have been several emotional games that have made me (and many others cry). Walking Dead, Life is Strange and Journey to name a few.
"video games aren't trying to make ppl cry" buncha games that have come out since this aired would beg to differ. at least he's giving them some credit, which is more than can be said for his contemporaries at the time
Remember this episode is from 2007, thats like a century in gaming terms. I doubt highly Charlie would concede even that now, what with emotive games like Heavy Rain, Spec Ops the Line or as you say the Walking Dead - especially the end!
Bits in games that have brought me to tears Aerith in FInal Fantasy 7 John Marston's last stand in Red Dead Redemption Alyx and Eli Vance in Half Life 2 Episode 2 The funeral in Lost Odyssey Several moments in Mass Effect 3 (Liz Sroka deserves a fucking oscar for Tali'Zorah) Losing Agro in Shadow of the Colossus Games absolutely have the capacity to make you cry if they want to, it's just not often that they do.
I know I'm watching this in 2022, but it's crazy how out of date the section on Internet videos is, it's like a time capsule from a completely different era.

I helped out with the game and video game TV show footage for this episode, didn't get credited, but they did credit me in the gameswipe episode.
Hello You!
Nice!
Charlie Brooker + Boards of Canada. CAN'T GET ENOUGH
Can't believe how old this looks now.
I am so happy that they play Boards Of Canada!
I love the effort they put into the fake Radio Times, full of blink and you'll miss it jokes.
"...There is no God, but there is a Jeremy Clarkson."
Hilarious!
The end of MGS3 got me, If Big boss can cry, I can cry too
I’d now add the end of rdr2 to that list
Ooooooh that's weird. I randomly decided to watch some old 24 clips. Then had my nostalgia fest and decided to watch Screenwipe and thought I'll watch some of series 3. And clicked on this one. Which features 24 :-) TH-cam algorithms are in sync with my brain!
14:00 Boards of Canada - ROYGBIV
27:16 holy fuck that's Lindybiege!
whowantsabighug It is indeed, how astonishing.
Thats exactly what i thought, is it actually him?
I love the way Scots say 'bastard'...
***** Haha yes! I remember Frankie Boyle saying that fairly often on Mock the Week... - melts - !
Lindybeige and Charlie Brooker are my two favourite people. Curse you, Brooker, for forcing me to choose with your vulgar dismissal of what I'm sure would have been a fascinating dance routine/magic act/whatever!
@5:35 Concept of Black Mirror episode S03E06 ("Hated in the nation") revealed!
My favourite game is identifying the soundtrack to this show.
10.000 phonebooks :O Wow, I hope I'll live to see the day!
God shook my mind by the hand...
Brilliant.
I remember this
when he talks about video games making you cry, I'd say that some games immerse you so heavily into characters that some of the best can make you feel deep empathy for the characters. If anything i feel closer to the player character whose actions i'm taking than a character on a screen i'm watching passively
FF7
5:34 foreshadowing of the premise of Black Mirror series 3 episode 6?
Omg again!
thats _exactly_ what I though
Its crazy to see the advances in vidogames since this came out
This reveals so much about Charlie's brain and black mirro
The end of Bioshock 2 nearly got me as well, when your daughter watching you die and she sobs "You are my conscience father...I need you to guide me"
And I play minecraft while listening to this so I'm not missing out XD
Look at ZeFrank now, he is soo good
I'd readily read that kid's book about the OCD wizard.
“Stories that I’ve WROTE.” Oh dear.
Spec ops the line, that game affected how i look on games on a whole and i like brooker, finished it with PTSD
sorry Charlie, i am watching you instead of playing games right now because somebody has to bloody code them :D
11:50 - Shows what you know, Brooker. I'm watching this on my Xbox. ;)
no video game will ever be so moving it makes the player cry?
spec ops: the line was so moving it nearly made me cut myself
Its funny that back in the day 4 millions views was alot whereas now its just a disappointing wednesday
I find the comments about youtube hilarious in contrast to how online media took off as an industry XD
I cried while playing the Mass Effect trilogy
9:56 People think it's a happy game, it's NOT a happy game, it's a FUCKING nightmare world and the worst thing is it's real and we live in it.
4 million is still a decent amount of TV viewers; it's all dependant on the channel.
Ha! I did have that haircut when I was nine.
Anyone know which version of "a view to a kill" that was?
12:57 BOARDS OF CANADAAAAAAA
epic tune
"No video-game is ever gonna be so moving it will make the player cry!"
*cough* Undertale *cough*
And Undertale was, by far, not the first.
Spec Ops The Line. And no one can ever take that away from me.
Several moments in Life Is Strange
Oh, nice one Larry! :D I was wondering what your avatar was doing hovering below this video!
11:00, those people have CLEARLY never paid attention to the poem Charr wrote Ereba in mass effect 3. OH THE TEARS!!!! D':
Gears of War 2 got me when Dom had to shoot his wife, and the third one when he killed himself. Bloody games *sniffle*
I want to know how that woman at the end kept a straight face. Awesome.
I've often thought the ratings system seems incredibly flimsy the way it is done, surely in this day and age they're is a much more accurate way to know who is watching what (there probably is since this was 13 years ago)
Play through the mass effect trilogy and tell me you didnt bawl your eyes out.
Or "hello!", as people used to say.
The TH-cam part is so dated😂
This is from 2007 you cretin.
well no shit
crazymo0o He means it's become dated since then. It doesn't make him a cretin.
pickledegg1989 How do you know what he means ?
***** Fuck man. its not dated, its old, I don't need an explanation for something that is blatantly obvious.
Was that Ed Miliband with the handgun at 1:04?
AC/DC at 1.40... thats all i wanted to say (other than charlie brooker is a beast)
no it's harold from harold and kumar
Yeah Burnistoun dudes.
09:03 - He's never played them, and "hopefully never will again"
THEN HOW DO YOU FEEL QUALIFIED TO COMMENT ON IT?!
How does the Telephone book unit system actually work... is 1 byte = 1 phone number?
1 byte = 1 number between 0-255. You could, in theory, use Binary Coded Decimal to get 2 numbers to each byte, but this was never done. A phone number in the format 0XXXX XXX XXX would take up 11 bytes including leading 0, 10 without.
Lol, a spitting image
20:54 how many shades of grey?
Hahaha
luv rab florence
luv roygbiv
luv david firth
luv prey (2006)
simple as
5:34 Did somebody say “Hated in the Nation”
5:29 is a Black Mirror pllot
Well this was in 2007, xbox tv was not as common, shows what you know, Chaz...wait your name is Chaz ahahaha.
It's like Jeremmy Clarkson but for tv
25:30 I remember Fortune, only because I remember that kid. I think he got.the money he wanted.
Love looking back on youtube now, 4 million people? In modern terms thats fuck all. Its all so primitive as well, hard to believe this was just a few years ago.
I cried when I played Final Fantasy VII and Aeris died...
oh fuck off
Theres a pacman app/extension for chrome called pacmania.
its like crack.
Gia thingy is married to Brian Cox the bloke who stands atop hills waving his bum at the camera while dumbing down cosmology, so no wonder she is so bored with life she just sits at home agrandising anonymous and inconsequential video blogs.
Maybe he used to be an actor before entering parliament. ;)
I've never in my life met anyone who is part of a ratings register household. Have to be pretty bored in life to sign up to that. Unless he didn't have a childhood Kermode is talking shit.
"I love documenting stuff." So you have OCD then.
how does htting the jackpot on deal or no deal make it statistically less likely that the next person will hit it?
***** and how they can stop it if someone picks the number and continues to the end? derrrr
***** well there is that
Law of averages?
24 is such total horseshit
No it was kumar.
Joke's on you Charlie, I'm playing Skyrim at the same time as watching this.
12:20 Karl Pilkington??
10:55 Except that since this was made there have been several emotional games that have made me (and many others cry). Walking Dead, Life is Strange and Journey to name a few.
Not sure if those games were released in 2007, mind!
doc hendrix I know. I did say "since this was made".
Code: Marla oh yeah, my bad!
no games make you cry...........walking dead
"video games aren't trying to make ppl cry"
buncha games that have come out since this aired would beg to differ. at least he's giving them some credit, which is more than can be said for his contemporaries at the time
14:56
Remember this episode is from 2007, thats like a century in gaming terms. I doubt highly Charlie would concede even that now, what with emotive games like Heavy Rain, Spec Ops the Line or as you say the Walking Dead - especially the end!
Bandersnatch...
Bits in games that have brought me to tears
Aerith in FInal Fantasy 7
John Marston's last stand in Red Dead Redemption
Alyx and Eli Vance in Half Life 2 Episode 2
The funeral in Lost Odyssey
Several moments in Mass Effect 3 (Liz Sroka deserves a fucking oscar for Tali'Zorah)
Losing Agro in Shadow of the Colossus
Games absolutely have the capacity to make you cry if they want to, it's just not often that they do.
Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty could make anyone cry.
16:00 dubstep?
19:35, They're totally missing the Simon Amstell effect. I didn't care when it was on, I'd be watching it.
It's not that bad.
This totally came out before walking dead game
Anyone who doesn't think that video games can make you cry has clearly never played undertale.
10:55 "People say no videogame will ever make the player cry". Well The Last of Us came close. And I rarely cry.
Don't open that door!
So I guess she must find the universe and all it's mysteries boring. I don't know, but it seems like Gia is a boring person.
If anyone has played lost odyssey, then you will know the part about video games not making you cry is a load of crap lol
It's well documented that Yahtzee was influenced by Charlie Brooker
Games don't make people cry. type in watch soap die and see the water works. That poor girl.
I think you may have not understood the games properly.
Ze Frank is not really any funnier than a picture of Ze Frank. He's interesting, but not funny. I wanted you to know that.
Yeah, it's a shame he didn't counter the argument with some RPG examples.
