  • An enlightening and provocative presentation is given by Valter Longo updating audience on the benefits of fasting for life-extension.
Dr. Valter Longo is the Edna M. Jones Professor of Gerontology and Biological Sciences, and Director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California - Davis School of Gerontology, Los Angeles. Dr. Longo’s studies focus on the fundamental mechanisms of aging in simple organisms, mice and humans. The Longo laboratory has identified several genetic pathways that regulate aging in simple organisms and reduce the incidence of multiple diseases in mice and humans. His laboratory also described both dietary and genetic interventions that protect cells and improve the treatment and prevention of cancer and other diseases in mammals. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1997 and his postdoctoral training in the Neurobiology of Aging and Alzheimer’s Diseases at USC. He started his independent career in 2000 at the University of Southern California, School of Gerontology.

I used to think, every time I got a bad head cold or influenza, my appetite would disappear for days. I could drink water but even thinking about food just made me nauseous. Now I know why. My body knows exactly what it was doing. All this time my mother would tell me to just "eat something, even a little bit" and I could feel my body saying no. It all makes sense now.

@@DC-ik1tk it could possibly be both. Starve a cold and a fever, as fasting is healing and rejuvenating for the body. However, hunger is an indication of when the body most wants food, just like thirst is an indication of when the body most needs hydration.

      @SCharlesS ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@tanrat7 except that in the modern, 1st work. hunger is usually an indication of addiction since most people are eating something every couple hours - and the food they eat is driving hunger. those protein bards are NOT helping hunger subside. and their hunger comes up after 4 hours of not eating. And even if they got to 12 hours and felt hungry their body is most likely not actually hungry if they had been feeding it constantly prior to that. in fact, if you can get past 24 hours or more your hunger feeling will subside thanks to the Leptin hormone.

His work is the final death knell to conventional medicine as we've known it. He's basically proved that we can completely revamp all the systems that accelerate aging and age-related diseases. Essentially regardless of what your disease from here on out, the first SCIENTIFIC thing to do is to fast. From a common cold all the way to cancer. Man, its a great time to be alive!

Found it interesting as it was actually backed up by sound medical research. I have adopted much of his advice given in his two books published on the subject. ‘ the 5:2 and the fast 800.
I haven’t got the strength to do without food for extended periods, so the intermittent fasting works well for me.
I have lost some weight although wasn’t particularly overweight in the first place.
I find the improvement come in the way of more energy, concentration and generally feeling more upbeat. I’m sure others could add many more positives to the list.
Lately I’ve been adding in some OMAD or one meal a day. This also has similar results.

I am of your religion but when we break our fast, the carb-laden food counterattacks and kills all of the benefits of fasting. Our Prophet MOHAMMED (SWT) was extremely healthy and don't believe he ever gorged on fried food and plethora of dishes when he broke his fast. Just a food (pun intended) for thought. :)) salaam Brother.

I don't need to be sold any further. (note) I'm now doing one meal a day twice a week. Not eating any more than when I have two meals. The difference is astonishing. My blood work shows virtually every marker significantly improved. When my weight goal is achieved I'm gonna do a longer fast. Mainly for the autophagy which they say will help clean up the loose skin I've gotten from weight loss. But the 16/8 meal plan I plan to stick with till I die. Nothing but benefits from my point of view.

Because my thyroid was removed in 1971 I am forced to go further to regenerate a thyroid, and have to date put in over 8000 hours of two week long dryfasting sessions, and am now off thyroid replacements. It took dedicated dryfasting for me to realize what bad condition my body was in beyond simply the thyroid issue.
I am now in day 21 of this dryfast, maximizing autophagy to allow the body to remove whatever does not serve it and restore fluidity to the great lymphatic system. The Nobel Prize in 2016 was awarded for studies into autophagy.

It's nice to know that it gets easier as days pass, as toxins are removed from the body. Keto is a version of FMD but I am not a fan since it can be misused where people skip good vegetables such as carrots due to the fiber. Dr. Longo is not a fan of IF from what I have understood believes in eating regularly but then to do long-extended fasts throughout the year to have the best bang for your buck. in other words, eating healthy and starting with breakfast with two to three meals a day and then extended fasts a few times a year depending on what you can do. me personally with about 10 lbs to lose. i am doing OMAD at least 5x a week, 3-day fasts every 3 months and then one big extended once a year -5-6 days.

Would be interesting to do a study with people from 2 groups -- one group of people that are accustomed to fasting and a separate group that haven't done much fasting before the experiment. Reasoning would be whether stress hormones play a factor in effectiveness of starting to fast until the conclusion of the experiment. People accustomed to fasting probably wouldn't as worried about their next meal and dealing with hunger pangs and so anxiety about something they've never tried before would be less and could result in significantly different results between the two groups. Some people fast as part of their religious beliefs and have been doing it since an early age so it isn't so new to them.

Reading his book now and find linking FMD with curing various diseases in his book and this presentation are unique and pioneering. With more further research and clinical trials, it will no doubt play an important part in helping human beings to extend life and age healthy in the years to come.

Very nice video. I just came off a 5 day water only fast and I feel amazing. I lost 10 pounds in 5 days, probably 2 pounds of water weight since I’m netting 8 pounds. I’m going to try FMD next.

What are your tips? What do you do with a hunger? Do you distract yourself? I think the first one to two days is already very hard for me.
