  • Originally destined for the surgical suite, Bert's experiences in the Marine Corps changed his outlook on medicine and the realities of global problems. After working at the National Institute of Health with a focus on cancer treatments, Bert found time to study global obesity. The outcome of this research sparked the Fast-5 weight-loss tool, which has helped thousands of people overcome obesity. It's a way of eating that is consistent with a lifestyle emphasizing simplicity and value-two virtues that are conspicuously absent in America's booming weight-loss industry.
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.     I'm living my best life fasting. Exercising almost everyday and eating great food during my eating windows. EVERYTHING changed for me I lost over 100 pounds and now I'm going to run my first marathon at 49 years old!

    The food industry is not going to be happy with this lecture. We have been brain washed into believing we need to eat all day long. Our bodies don't get enough time to digest all this food. You have to find what works for you.

    As a physician (40 years) and a long history of weight related sports (rock climbing, wrestling) I agree completely. Breakfast has been a variable and I feel better and lose weight when I skip.

      To each his own. I cannot survive without breakfast. This is the time I can have affordable, healthy meals as I am at home preparing them. When I go out to work with empty or half-full stomach, I end up eating unhealthy or greasy foods because they’re the ones easily available and cheap.

    Thank you, l have been on a lchf intermittent fasting diet for 20 months and have lost 60 pounds my bp was 160/97 on metropol 50 bid now my bp is 120/70 on 25mg metroprol 25 mg bid. By the way I am 72 years young walk twice a day and can lift 50 pound feed sack. Just sharing to help others see how life changes can do.

      I’m very frustrated. When I do 16-8 fasting, I have a hard time sleeping for two reasons: I’m starving at night, and I start to have more energy. So I have to quit. How do you deal with the hunger? I’m doing all the right things but still get hungry and then can’t sleep because I’m uncomfortably hungry or I can’t sleep and then start to feel hungry around 1 or 2 am!

    Intermittent fasting has totally changed my life. Because of a smaller window of when I eat I naturally go for better calories of good food and stay away from junk food.

    One of our best TED talks. I've followed Fast=5 for six years, losing 20 pounds. Lately I've been on Fast 8 or 9; and I'm adding a few pounds. Seriously, this life style (Fast5) works.. If we can spread this idea to more and more people we will bring better health to many.

      Eating breakfast every day kept me hungry and eating all day long, never being satisfied. I lost 30 lbs in one year NOT dieting, but eating within a 5 hour window.

    started fasting very similar to this for a month now, lost more weight in that month than i have in my entire life using many diets and failing at them out of stress or depression etc, boredom especially. Fasting is amazing, i get up, feel super alert, have a black coffee and smash out all my work, and on top of this all my strength records in the gym have gone up. Secret to life for sure

    I really love the idea of the study of one. It's an almost forgotten concept in clinical care - case studies. And it's incredibly important as a clinician to understand what works and doesn't work for clients. Teaching them how to listen to their own bodies is the most essential thing we can do for them!

    And "LUNCH is the second most important meal NOT to eat"... If you want to be healthy...

      OMG! Now I know why I lost 5 pounds without dieting! I was sick for 5 days and did not eat breakfast. Still haven't and I don't want it. This doesn't surprise me because I'm well aware of cons we are bombarded with on a daily basis. Thank you for the reality of this one!

    8 months in to fasting and I am 35 lbs lighter. Now I have no problems fasting except on weekends when I am at home. My wife also joined me a few months later and same results. My family Dr. said keep doing whatever you are doing. I am doing better at work too. This is an awesome video that inspired me to do the fasting thanks Dr. Herring.

    I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in October 2017. I checked in with various video's and went on a Low Carbohydrate diet. My HbA1C levels dropped from 6.5 in October to 4.9 in March and my weight dropped from 17 stone to 16 stone. I have now been on intermittent fasting, 2 24 hour fasts per week. for the March - April and I have lost another stone, down to 15 stone. I have never felt so energised and intellectually sharp in years. And I am spontaneously doing exercise because of my increased energy levels. This is in stark contrast to a Low calorie diet where I lacked energy, had to force myself to exercise and eventually put back all the weight that I had lost. Low Carb and intermittent fasting is working for me !

    I do fast5, from 7 to 12 every morning. It is perfect! I am always full, I make healthy choices, no grains, no unhealthy snacks. Great system!

      Seid Kona I've naturally done fast5 most mornings of my life without even realizing it, lol. I just naturally never wanted breakfast, stomach almost always bothered me in the mornings or just felt sensitive to food. Listen to your body, after all...

      I have lost 20 lbs I eat from 2 to 7 and my blood pressure meds have been reduced. This is a lifestyle not a diet love it..

    So true! I had simular experience from fasting. I skipped breakfast a few times and found I wasn't hungry. I extended it to 12md and found the longer I left it the less I felt hungry

    I am only on day 9 of fast5 (food window). I started 18:6 but I’m moving to 19:5. I can’t believe how I am not hungry. I feel good. My skin looks so much better. No pain in my joints & my stomach isn’t bloated. I am hoping this sticks. I can do this.

    I just want to say that technically all of you eat breakfast unless you don't eat that day. Breakfast is just when you break your fast. You just break your fast later in the day. 😊
    I agree with everything this man said. Breaking my fast later help's me control hunger through out the day.

    When Benjamin Franklin was a young man he was in England without much money, and he began skipping meals til dinner. He felt such less brain fog all day when he did this, that he just made a habit of it. This is in his autobiography.

    This works but people should try different eating times.
    For me a 16/8 ( 8 hour eating window a day usually between 9-5 ) works better since I do get hungry
    if my eating window is any smaller.
    Since implementing intermittent fasting,I have been able to maintain an 8% body fat level with very little exercise.
    I usually do two fast paced weight lifting sessions per week of around 30 minutes and that's it.

    As a child, I never at breakfast. Then the school started serving it and I started eating it. By the age of 15 I was 5'1" and 185 lbs. I quit eating breakfast again. I had a light (very) lunch and didn't start eating again until 8PM. By age 17 I was a lean 130 pounds and I'd grown 3" in height.
    I never have had an appetite for breakfast, but I've been convinced that I have to eat 'something' and encouraged to eat 5 small meals a day. Now I'm getting fatter and fatter.
    Thinking back, EVERY TIME I've successfully lost weight, I didn't start eating anything until at the earliest 3PM. It doesn't matter what I eat, I'm hungry at night.
    I'm going to try this. Stop making myself eat when I'm not hungry. We'll see how it goes.

      Parents (and teachers) try their best, but they don’t always get it right. As a little one, you were listening to your body. Left alone, you might have continued this practice, and have been more willing to do other adjustments that could have lead to a healthier life style.
      (Think about leaving off all wheat products for a few months. May make no difference but for me, as an O Blood and probably some wheat allergy, I gained sensuality in my legs, could now walk great distances and run when I chose, which I could not as a child and up to the time.

      Ya know, I never really paid attention to lack of breakfast as a kid..but come to think of it, I was not fat as a kid while living with custodial parent....mostly didn't eat breakfast there, either. It wasn't until moving in with other parent, where breakfast was always served [and all meals served with 'better eat it, because millions of starving waifs in poor countries...'], I got fat!
      To be honest though, breakfast and food guilt trips were not the only factor at that time--there was extreme unhappiness, too.
      But eating breakfast doesn't explain why that did not continue to cause obesity a teen? That might that have been also the lack of access to junk and snack foods.
      you might be onto something...with the wait until one is actually hungry.
      I, too, have experienced wanting to eat, towards evening, no matter how many calories consumed during the day. Perhaps fasting until later in the day, could help stop this.

      It has for me, WinterStar. I eat most days within about 90min to 2 hours; small meal, 2nd smaller meal or snack. But it is also what I now choose to eat and what not to eat. I figure every morsel should count; so I now nix rice, root crops, all grains. Quality butter, Hemp oil, olive oil, lamb, low carb veg, blue berries, pineapple, mango, (apple in season) all seem to have the nutrients my body does best on. Surprisingly, the Hemp oil seems to have fixed my eczema.
      I think what one eliminates on this diet is as important as the time line.
      I no longer use food as my entertainment, I eat for nutrients to feed my body. My occasional snack is down to ice cream or chocolate, which I turn to less frequently, less than once a week.
      But listening to the body becomes easier on this plan. I pay more attention to texture, taste, nuances. Gulping as a habit may prevent one from drawing concern over what they eat.

    I've been on a very similar diet also based on my own experience. This video is great to justify what I do. I normally eat in 6 hour window but will now give the 5 hour window a go. I normally don't start eating until noon until 6 pm. I also throw in the odd 24 hour fast. I don't always eat the healthiest of foods but I feel amazing and have lost lots of weight. People think I'm on speed but I'm flying on fasting :)

      eyedeeaz My story is much the same as yours, eyedeeaz; I’ve been limiting my two meals to a 6-7 hour period; five sounds better and I, too can manage that.
      I also fast once a week (30h fast as it takes about six hours for digestion to be complete), three days at the end of each month and 5-10 days at the season changes (those months I forgo the end month three day-er).
      What a lovely man. And such great ideas. Imagine, an MD that thinks beyond his training.
      I’d also given up on TEXx talks after they banned Sheldrake and Hancock and all the nutty topics (dating, meditating in the fast lane, no more porn, why people scratch, etc.) but I shall cherry pick, for even in the dump some good things can be found.

      eyedeeaz It’s been ten weeks or so and I am losing a bit over a lb a week (more now that I can’t eat after having a tooth extracted) and it is easy-peezy. (Down to the 5 hour or less period as well; usually begin at 5pm~9-ish) Just took a little bit of endurance the first few weeks. Don’t have much to lose, have lost about 12lb and another ten-ish to go. Sometimes I am not hungry for my second meal or snacks, even. My trick is that I do not use food for my entertainment. And i don’t watch TV so no adverts to distract me.

    I actually found a lot of value in this Bert Thank you It is a wise approach to focus upon how important it is for us to have our own control and be responsible for our own monitoring of our health and well- being and I like the Wholistic approach looking at our environment as well as our bodies.

    Excellent talk! Love the humor, too. Good advice.
    I've witnessed people healing their physical ailments using all kinds of protocols, from ketogenic to vegan; even certain fasting protocols. All types could potentially do well; and all types of those protocols could fail to remedy, depending how well an individual followed protocols.
    Missing keys seemed always to be ability to stick to a protocol properly, as a routine, and overcoming dysfunctional body signals and unbalanced chemistries.
    Perhaps the "intermittent fasting" he describes, is really key, more crucial than what one eats, is the when and maybe how one eats.
    Ancient ancestors hunting and gathering, probably had to work to find foods for at least a few hours after they awoke, in order to eat. When they found food, it took time to prepare.
    We have a stomach that can hold enough calories to 'tide us out' until the next day, IF we stick to this pattern, which should allow the signalling chemistries in the body to re-set, to help us stop craving excess calories. It might even encourage us to re-engage with Life more productively and joyfully, as mood elevates when the body is no longer swamped in excess calories and their waste products.
    This s a good guideline [the daily 5-hour food window], which most people could follow fairly easily.
    Are there exceptions? Of course. But even a diabetic who needs frequent complex carb or protein snacks to keep blood sugar more even, could sneak-up on this food-window, even if not fully, could still rep benefits.
    Common sense needs to prevail over power-marketing!

    Fast 5 works for me. I started it April 2016. I adapted to it in about three weeks. When I felt hungry a few hours before the eating time window opened, just have a glass of water, get busy working on something and soon the hungry feeling went away. By Dec I had dropped 30 lbs. I found I felt better, had more energy, and clearer faster thinking.
    I also naturally craved healthier foods, and new recipes to try. Mostly I ate whatever I wanted, only mostly avoiding cookies, etc. except for once or twice per week. Once getting to about the weight I wanted to be I was less strict about it and resumed having coffee and a muffin. From Dec to April 2017 I dropped a few more lbs, Now oscillating between 143 - 145.
    I did it partly for myself and partly to prove it works and hopefully inspire my wife to try it too. After criticizing me for several months, that it wasn't healthy for me. She realized that it was good for me, and she decided to give it a try too. She adapted to it much more slowly, taking about 2.5 months to get to a 5 hour eating window. But once she found she is also averaging losing about 1 lbs./week she has stayed with it and has dropped about 40lbs. and two dress sizes. However, she says she doesn't notice any increase in mental alertness or energy level, but also no drop in energy level.
    Now I enjoy the feeling of not having my digestive system working to digest food, and frequently don't want to eat anything after 19 hours of fasting and will go longer, perhaps on that day also eating only a very small meal after fasting for more than 24 hours. Or even 36 hours. It's also fun being able to wear a belt that hasn't fit for more than five years. Or needing to add new holes to a newer belt I had been wearing because the belt no longer cinched up tight enough.
    I also recommend Dr. Bert's two books. The first, and older. book is short, only about 62 pages. It's a quick summary of how it works and why you might want adapt to this eating pattern. It's on Amazon or free in PDF format from his website.

    I have been loving the fast 5! I have lost 50 pounds and gained a lot of muscle in the past 6 months. Down to a size 2 jeans!! I eat between 12-5pm 😊

    I've lowered my HbA1c from 5.9 to 5.7 in the 4 month's since I've started intermittent fasting, I've also dropped 38 lbs in that time, all while strength training not doing insane amounts of cardio. Fasting has allowed me to drop the fat while retaining muscle mass. Combine IF with a sensible diet and workout plan and I promise you, you'll never want to go back to that idiotic eating every 2-3 hours.

    2019. I was just telling someone a few months ago, I fasted three days and suddenly my appetite wasn't running my life. That one factor has brought my weight down from 265 lbs, to 212, as of yesterday. I don't know how long it took, but I do trace it back to that event. I also note that most of my eating falls within that time window he suggests. There was always a little nagging thought as to whether I was getting enough nutrition, but at 265 it was hard to go up stairs, and my knees hurt. Probably inflammation!

    i just feel more energetic during the whole day and sleep better at night.

    OH MY!! I'm approaching my 75th Birthday. I 've been wanting to water ski again for rhe past 20 yrs. This past Sunday my son said, "Okay, Gramma Sugar, Reid (7-yr-old grandson) wants to wakeboard You've been saying you want to waterski, how do you feel?" I said, "I AM READY!!" I stretched, and got in the water to guide Reid as he worked on the way-too-big wakeboard. He was a champ. Didn't get up, but I know he will this Thursday when he tries again on a right-sized board.
    He got back in the boat and they slid! He skies out to me.
    I tried 3 times. I did not get up. But I WILL get up on Thursday when I try again.
    I cannot wait. And it felt SO good to try. I felt invigorated. Ecstatic. Now, to watch the rest of this TED talk. (Why are people laughing at the thought of a 100-yr-old waterskier???)

    Breakfast is the easiest meal of the day to skip. I skip it when I am having with friends. I like to be hungry when I eat. The food tastes better.

    It is hard to keep due to the habits of other people you live with, but when I am on my own I feel very well with only one meal per day, and I have been going through the most mentally intensive periods of my life, with plenty of exams etc. always skipping breakfast entirely, having my first meal of the day after 7 hours of being awake. Weirdly enough I though I was doing it wrong until I started seeing all this.

    Yes thanks Bert for the video - only heard you before on podcasts or read you! I tend to use fast 5 on and off, I'm a vegan but used fast 5 first when I was vegetarian. I know you have advised reducing starches on fast 5 but that is not easy for me, would you say a vegan should perhaps increase them on this protocol ? I am in this for health benefits not weight loss.
