Hey kids, its Uncle Ben Eller back with Weekend Wankshop 315, in which we dive deep into one of the sickest, meanest, fastest, and HARDEST Metallica riffs ever: the solo section of Frayed Ends of Sanity from ...And Justice For All! Gallops, odd time signatures, chugs, spider chords... its gots it ALL! Super challenging and fun to play, too.
    Riff breakdown starts at 2:30
Time signature explanation starts at 13:15
Today i'm using my Ibanez RG550 with Fishman Fluence Classic pickups into a Pepers Pedals Dirty Tree into a Mesa Dual Rec. This is all going into the Suhr RL/IR box, with an Ownhammer IR running.
What Metallica riffs should we break down next on a future lesson?! Let me know!

When it comes to sound quality/production the nod goes to Master of Puppets, but for me AJFA has the best metal riffs ever recorded. Funny thing is that for me the weird audio production (especially the drums) actually adds to the overall aesthetic and it just works. A true metal masterpiece!

I`d rather had this as an instrumental part and then Kirk lay a solo over a simplified version of this riff (just to keep Hetfileld`s wrist safe). This is awesome man! Can you do a breakdown of the harmony at the end of Eye of the Beholder

I think the rhythm behind the Blackened solo is my favorite.

Thanks for this lesson. One simple (well, not that simple as the guitar solo). Have you planned to upload the guitar solo for this song? Or any of the And Justice for all solos?

Where does Lars hide all his sickest drumming?

This album is what got me into guitar. I said to myself, I must learn how to chug! So I found a bass....Yeah, I eventually realized I was wrong.

Changing the playback to 2x speed and listening to the stepdad speed section is more entertaining than it probably should be.

There's a riff in 'The Struggle Within' on The Black Album, just after James shouts "GO!" that's one of the best, heaviest, things they came up with. It's just thrown in away as filler. Madness. '...And Justice for All' is Metallica's best album, no doubt. The rhythm alone could hold the entire thing together. I think they said after they made it they needed to tone it down and make life simpler. I've always wondered what life would be like if they'd kept it up into the 90s.

Well, if they had actually continued on that trajectory and practiced their instruments, they might have wound up in like pre-Dream Theater territory. Not to say they didn’t make the right call for themselves ultimately, but it would seem to me that the only plausible alternative would have been to get more and more progressive and just heavier and heavier. After a certain point though, there are rather diminishing returns in trying to just get heavier and more complicated all the time. I think they more or less knew this in ‘89-‘90, and that is why they chose to go the route they did with their next few albums. Still though, it would be fascinating to hear what they would have come up with had they continued pushing the AJFA envelope and not decided to dumb things down for the black album.

I've always loved the alternate of the main riff from Battery, that James plays under the solo.

The guitar stuff behind the solo is really sick! I learn fight fire with fire for a few months now. What i am struggling with the most? The galopp part of the rhythm guitar during the solo!

Damn!! That's some heavy shizz right there!! I'd love to see a detailed unpacking of all the melodic/harmonic lines on the Justice album & how they deal with that stuff in a live sense with only 2 guitars!!!
