Thank you for such a beautiful video of winter scenes in Shetland with enchanting musical background. I really enjoyed listening to the Shetland dialect. I have strong connections to the Islands and many relatives living there. Shetland is in my soul. ❤
Recently I visited Orkney Islands. It was more impressive that I ever could imagine. The peace, the light, the wind, the solitude, the cliffs, everything was amazing. My next destination is Shetland, I hope to love it as much as Orkney
I so wish I could move my Children, Grandchildren and myself to Shetland. I lived on the Oregon coast for years. But Shetland is the only place I know that can hold a candle to that place.
My Grandmother is from Shetland and I'm wanting to come in Feb of 2022. Covid willing. As a young boy, she would talk to me about the winter there. How beautiful it is. It has been a dream of one to get there and now at 40somthing I will. Cant wait to meet you all.
I’m focusing all my energy on moving to this beautiful place. My soul can’t be at peace till I’m there. Applying for teaching jobs there until I’m successful 🤞
Sounds a nice invitation...I start walking next week up from Newcastle. So when further up north will study the ferries. I walk with a Walkingtrailer, so say hello if you see me!!!
The Shetlands are on the same latitude as my native city of Saint Petersburg, Russia. They are many hundreds kilometres from it. Nevertheless, my heart is there. Thanks a lot for the chance to see this beauties. Greetings and love from Russia!
My great grandmother came from Shetland. Her family emigrated to Karamea in New Zealand in 1874 when she was about twenty years old. Her name was Mary Johnson. She was born in Brindister, Aithsting. Maybe one day I will get to visit Shetland. Have a good day everyone. PS I hear there are not too many murders there! Love that tv programme.
My G/G/Grandma, Annie Bruce Matthewson, born 1857, also came (from Unst) to NZ in 1875 - possibly on the ship Jessie Readman. Family lore has it that she travelled with her future husband, Welshman Thomas Richard Wheeler Harrhy. They married not long after their arrival at Port Chalmers, another fishing village, where they spent the rest of their lives. As one might expect, fishing was in their blood. Their sons would also become fishermen. Their innate hardiness coupled with all that fish in their diet may have contributed to their longevity. Both died at home in their mid-90s - no mean achievement in the 1950s and within four hours of each other. This close parting made the local newspapers. Again, according to family the old man died of a broken heart. "Oh, who would inhabit This bleak world alone?" (The Last Rose Of Summer)
I spent 7 years there in the early eighties. A part of my soul still yearns. It is still home in some way. My hills and the Westside and the toon, Lerwick are still part of me. Have to limit my trips back in case I decide to return.
I've just been transported to a majestic land. Breathtaking. To see that dome of stars overhead and the waves pounding the cliffs, the play of light now crystalline then misty - truly a remarkable corner of the world. Doubt I will ever be able to visit so your videos will be watched many times. Thank you. And since it is Christmas best holiday wishes to all in the Shetland Islands. May 2021 be kinder to all of us. Greetings from NYC.
I made this trip several times back in the 1950's whilst serving 18 months on UNST, at R.A.F. SAXA VORD in Haroldswick. The ferries were a little different then, S.S. St.CLAIR & S.S. St.NINIAN. Often thought of doing a civie visit. they were good days, many happy memories.
Thanks for the memory. Was in Shetland from 1978 to 1979 (Scalloway to Unst to Spiggie). I lived in Banks Cottage near Haroldswick in 1978. I remember the roads were always being rebuilt after the heavy trucks tore up the road to Saxa Vord!! And, of course, Haroldswick has the most northern Post Office.
That's lovely to hear Nancy :) If we can help with that, you're more than welcome! Lots more info at www.shetland.org and in our Facebook group if you wish to seriously plan that move: facebook.com/groups/livingworkingshetland/
First heard about this place while reading about celtic tribes, and well, Islands are the most interesting places and got to read about the Land of man and then discovered Shetland, i must say that Shetland is the most interesting medieval archipallego for me rn.
PS. Also a naturalist Simon[forget his surname but the Shetlanders might know who I am talking about] was on Shetland this year although it could have been shown in the recent past.
In late December, how many hours of day light does shetland get? I guess 5 1/2 to 6, which is not much. Can anyone confirm? We get about 6.5 to just over 7 or so in Edinburgh.
@@alancrowe6417 Thanks. A family member who has visited Orkney suggested 4 hours of dim light in Mid Winter, when over cast and cloudy. So you need to be very fair skinned (White) to cope up North. Thanks
This is so cool I could watch it all night.

No such place as The Shetlands the ‘s’ is on the Islands… from a Shetlander! 🤦🏻♀️

I feel that too Richard, i'm hoping to be back up soon and for good this time.
Earlier this year, BBC Scotland which I can get down in Suffolk, showed a program called Storm Born which showed some shots of Shetland.
Yes I love that nature show as well!
Its so nice to think that i live on a island, that is full of nature and life...
Stunning footage! I can imagine the long hours of darkness is tough. It is for me here in the New England part of the U.S.

I'm watching this from the horrible summers here in the US Midwest. Hot, humid, stale stagnant air. I don't know how much more of this I can take!
What a cool little video. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful Video, hopefully experience Shetland myself one day
Beautiful look forward to a visit

I spent my childhood there on south of Island, I miss it lots and want to bring my daughter there for a holiday!
Same, I lived in Virkie. When i left i promised myself i'd move back and stay. 2021 is looking good for it lol.

Beautiful! Would love to visit, but I don’t think I will survive the cold. ❄️🥶Warm greetings from Namibia 🇳🇦
It isn't that cold, at least not as cold as the same latitude in, say, Norway. The Gulf Stream keeps the islands relatively warm.
I'm booked to visit in May but I'm so tempted to jump in my camper on Boxing Day, head north and book a boat over there.
That's great Tom! We look forward to welcoming you, and if we can help with your planning, let us know - www.shetland.org :)
Merry Christmas, beautiful place. Being there I would miss the forest, though.

We get about 6.5 to just over 7 or so in Edinburgh.
Some days when it's cloudy and overcast it barely gets light at all, we make up for it in summer when we get 20 hours of daylight.

For me in midwinter the sun rises at 8:30 or so and sets at like 3:30-4
Do the wonderful folks of Shetland feel OK about Americans visiting in search of inner peace? We would want to blend in and not cause notice.
I love storms, do you get very powerful storms where you are ?
