    Why didn't you use the original Toyota rear axle?

    • @cullumstirling
      @cullumstirling 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got the axles as a package deal. They already had the gearing I wanted, with disk brakes, with a mechanical locker, and I figured for the long run at least I don't have worry about breaking any axle shafts. Ground clearance is definitely a down fall to the 14 bolt. If it wasn't for the package deal, I would have kept the stock rear.

    Toyota quit making quality trucks.

    • @BuilttoVenture
      @BuilttoVenture  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately not many folks keep their vehicles for a lifetime these days so there's no much need to build them that way anymore. There's also a factor in which all the safety requirements needed to meet certain crash test results along with emissions and MPG requirements that have played into that part.

    • @dundeeecroc
      @dundeeecroc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BuilttoVenture That's true, some people want to work on their own vehicles. I have learned that
      'more moving parts" such as computerized electronics etc tend to break down easily, and Toyota dropped the ball on having good frames made. not anymore.

    Love the build.
    How does the truck feel on road?
    Still handle well?
    Has your gas mileage changed at all?

    • @cullumstirling
      @cullumstirling 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! The truck handles really well on and off road despite the height. The extra width I believe compensates for that. I put 30k on the build and that included a lot of hard core riding in the first few (haven't got to trail ride much lately due to life). The front leaf spring bushings seem to wear out decently quick, but then again I have also read the bushings typically only last ~10k miles.
      Unfortunately the front driveline angle is impossible to get optimal, so running faster than 25 mph is not wise. Only way I can figure to get around that is to eventually do a dual T/C OR swap in a custom high pinion front axle.
      Almost forgot, I did also swap in a 14 bolt out of a 2006 2500. It had stock disk brakes and E-brake (although discovered after the fact that the stock e-brake is pretty useless).
      Gas mileage... haha adjusting for speedo / tachometer off, I'm somewhere in the range of 13-15 mpg. The tires I have are very heavy (although great) and not to mention with heavy sliders, arb bumper, winch, and camper shell, the truck is weighing in around 5600lbs :|
      Someday wishlist is: Front coil spring swap with high pinion front axle (maybe F250), dual TC, diesel swap, Aussie style topper build / setup, and put it on 37/38's.

    I'm currently collecting parts for the SAS on my T100. I've also got a D44 from a '76 K20. I'd love to talk more about your spring setup, and I'm curious to see how you modified the bumper to mount on the truck. I currently have a Northwest Trail Innovations front bumper, which mounts where the WFO front hanger sits. Great looking truck by the way!

    Does it need it to be a 4x4 to make it SAS? Just wondering cuz my T-100 is a 2WD.

    • @BuilttoVenture
      @BuilttoVenture  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will make your life a lot easier if it's already 4x4. With a 2wd, you'll have to swap in all the necessary 4x4 components (transfer case, new drive shafts, possibly an ECU if it's an automatic, etc...). It would be doable, but require lot of work and probably not worth your time or money. Rather buy a 4x4 T100 and go from there.

    Any recommendations on lift kits for a stock 97? Got 33’s on it just need a lil lift

    • @BuilttoVenture
      @BuilttoVenture  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I put on a 2 1/2" ball joint spacer lift but I personally would not recommend it. Due to the poor geometry it puts the ball joints at, you will absolutely tear through them... If I was to do it again, I would knock the fender and rocker panel back with a hammer and try to gain enough clearance that way first. From there if you still needed a small amount of clearance maybe then run a 1 inch BJ spacer, but that's as much as I'd go.
      You could also just stick with 32's and still be fairly capable and stock.
