    I know its an older video, but its honestly so helpful. I am doing Raven Guard for my heresy army and have watched every black armour video I can find, painted 5 test models and still not happy with my scheme, I want it more matte! Then I found your video and it's what I pictured in my head, going to my LGS tomorrow to pick up scale 75 flat black. Will probably highlight with eshin and dawnstone since I have those already, but doubt it will change the look too much.

    that matt black is amazing, though scale 75 does kinda intimidate me as a newbie, painting is the one thing i enjoy the most in the building process, and raven guard is my choice of SM army,
    might go more custom though, as i love the idea of having a more personalized army

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Don't let Scale75 intimidate you, they are amazing paints. The only difference they have a gel based medium which means you can thin them and they still keep a strong colour.
      I totally get that they can seem advanced because a lot of the top painters like to use them and they talk about blending and glazing and things but ignore all that and give a pot a go.
      You'll find that they're really no different to your GW or Vallejo paints.
      Just give 'em a good shake before use
      Oh! and you need to prick a hole in the nozzle before use. I know a few people didnt notice this and squeezed a new bottle until it popped!
      As a newbie you have the perfect excuse to try new things and see how things work.
      Just don't be afraid to try
      Happy painting :)

    Thanks for sharing this- I’ve been building and painting my 30K Raven Guard Legion for the past three years, and one of my main headaches has been consistency of the armour reflection- it’s been mostly matte, but occasionally some come in a bit shiny- and they’re unfortunately some of my better painted models, so I’m afraid to go back and mess them up! I have always had a tough time with eye lenses, too, but what I now do is (having already primed everything matte black) paint the lens with white (usually Vallejo Game Color “Dead White”), and when dry, paint over the white with Citadel’s “Blood For The Blood God”. It dries to a nice shiny, transparent looking glass lens appearance. I then outline it with Citadel’s Ulthuan Grey- and done! I think it comes out nicely, and I can handle it consistently. I’m looking forward to trying your suggestions for black, and for the black metallic gun casing. Thanks again!

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. Consistency can be a problem when painting large number of the same troops. I can recommend Testors Dullcote as a great matte varnish. It's not cheap but it works really well and would give your whole army a consistent finish.
      Good use of Blood for the Blood God. It's a cool paint and I can see it working really well for lens etc.
      If you do try out any of the paints I suggested for the black or metallics, let me know what you think :D

      Brushstroke Painting Guides Thank you again, and will do! I usually use Lahmian Medium by Citadel if I want to matte down a shiny bit- I find that it works for me to paint it over stray super glue shine slips, and I always use it over waterslide transfers. I’ll try your Testor’s suggestion, and I’ll definitely get back to you after trying that groovy metallic. Thanks, too, for your response!

      The main characteristic of the Scale75 paints used in this scheme are that they are super matte. Games Workshop paints dont have that characteristic, so it’s not really possible to have a like for like alternative.
      That’s said, if you have to use GW paints, I would go with Corvus Black and Eshin grey or Dawnstone (depending on how bright you want your edge highlights to be)
      One way you could make the GW paints more matte, would be to apply a matte varnish over them when you’re done to kill that shine.
      If you ever do get a chance to try out Scale75 paints, mail order on the internet etc. then I do highly recommend trying the Black used in this video. It is like no other black on the market.
      Hope that helps and thanks for watching

    I've bee waiting for this since your posted the initial shots on the 40k subreddit. I love the way the black turned out. I have a question and a thought:
    1) why did you start with the Eshin Grey and not the black? Would it not be easier to slap the black on and then pick out the eshin grey where needed?
    2) I really like your tutorials, but I find your background with all the paint pots distracting, and it takes away from how great your model looks! I think even a sheet of white paper could make for a great background that would help the mini pop!

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching.
      OK, so the reason for the eshin grey first is because I’m taking advantage of the pale grey primer and by using thinned eshin it sits in the recesses more than the ridges. This gives a Shadow and highlight in one go. Adding the nuln oil later exaggerates this more and means no need to highlight.
      I take your point about the background. I just film as I paint, so I still need to access those paints.
      I’ll have a think what I can do to make it less busy

      I dont like using washes when painting greys and whites because I find they just make things too grubby looking.

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use a small dab of gorilla super glue to fix the pieces together. I find it absorbs through the paint and bonds the parts really well.
      If you wanted to use plastic cement you would need to scratch off some paint at the contact points to allow plastic to plastic to touch and the glue to melt them together

      @@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Oh, I believe you! I've used the ScaleColor purples, and I think second to Molten Metals they have the best metallic paints on the market, but I've never tried the Flat Black.
      I love the 'stealth bomber' look these guys have, as opposed to the really reflective blue-black that most black power armour is painted with. I can accept the bright red shoulder rim for aesthetic reasons, but the Raven Guard would probably not want polished armour that's going to catch every glint of sunlight...

    Would Vallejo model color black work in place of scale75 black?

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It would work in terms of it being a nice looking black, but it doesn’t have the super matte finish of the scale75 black. In fact, no other paint does. Scale75 is unique in its matte finish.
      Now, if you just can’t get Scale75 where you are, then my advice would be to find an ultra matte varnish you can use to try and achieve a similar finish instead.

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For these you could use either a grey or black primer and get a great result.
      I tend to opt for a zenithal prime of grey over black for these video because it makes the details show up better for the camera.
      Off camera, I like to use grey because I find it’s a good neutral colour and allows easy painting of both light and dark colours over it and it’s easier to see details than it is with a black primer
      I would only ever tend to use a black primer if I’m painting terrain where there’s a chance I may miss painting a bit but it won’t matter as the black will just make it look like a deep shadow :)

  • @TheCrookedMoon
    @TheCrookedMoon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I totally did not know that Scale75 paints are so different to what usually work with with Citadel/Vallejo etc. Due to them being gel based can you not mix them together then or do they still mix fine?

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can totally still mix them as you would any other paint. They’re still acrylic paints. They just have a gel medium. It actually makes them better (in my opinion) for blending and glazing. They thin down amazingly without diluting their pigment saturation.
      It’s difficult to explain in words, id suggest getting a bottle and trying one for yourself. The black is probably a good one to start with, as a matt Black is always handy

    So quick question for all you warhammer experts, I just got my first set of warhammer minies, they’re for a kill team, I got heavy intercessors space marines, the guy at the games workshop store told me I can paint them however I wanted, I can make my own chapter if I wish, but I love the look and color scheme of raven guard, does it make sense for me to paint my heavy intercessors in the color scheme of raven guard? Or do they need to be specific raven guard minies for that to work? Am I committing a warhammer sin if I do so?

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      By no means a Warhammer expert, but I can confirm the advice you were given was absolutely right, you can paint your minis however you like.
      So if you want you intercessors to be black then that’s cool.
      All I would say, is you shouldn’t put Raven Guard symbols on your minis if youre going to play them as Raven Guard.
      Other than that, you can paint them any colours you want. Go for it!

    How many coats of black do you usually have to do? Trying to get used to these paints!

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually apply this as a couple of coats to get a solid coverage.
      Don’t worry too much about counting the number of coats though, the important thing to concentrate on is getting the paint on cleanly and smoothly.
      Sometimes that’ll just take a single coat other times it may take more. You’ll find with these paints the pigment level in them is really high, so you can thin them a surprising amount and still get a really strong colour
