The potato dish might have been better when cutting the sausages in pieces and adding them ad the start. Or add instant gravy, obviously.

The thing is guys you should have made them walk 20 miles first because personally after a long day on the trail i would eat anything and it tastes great.Ihave tried the same meal at home and it tastes toxic. paul UK.

Nooooooo! Mashed potatoes are the topping for the Shepard’s pie!
    Y’all need a do-over on that one.
    Begin with the mashed potatoes.
Boil the water, hydrate the potatoes, and set aside in a bowl or something.
Now, cook up your veggies and beef or TVP.
Boil to rehydrate, and add in the gravy mix.
Spread the potatoes over the top and it’s ready to eat.
If you’re at home making it, normally you’d bake it for a half hour to brown the potatoes on top (at about 350), but for the trail you can skip that part and it’ll be just fine.
Y’all are actually doing great, and you’re all a lot of fun to watch!

Use Ziplock freezer bags. One for the potatoes, one for the beef and veggies, and one for the gravy. Freezer bags can take boiling water and you can make coozies for them, too.

Just seeing this.. I'm the one that recommended the scalloped potatoes and smokey links.. you did it all wrong! Lol. There are stove top directions on the box.. It needs to be cooked in the pot with the smokies. It at least needs to come to a boil with all the ingredients, then you can take it off the stove and set aside in a cozy.. Just pouring hot water over it is where you went wrong..

The shepherd's pie could have been done easier by hydrating the meat in excess water and adfing the mashed potato mix to it.
Potentially the vegetables might have gone in the same pot, adding it first or later, depending on the rehydration time as compared with the meat.

You should try cheddar bacon bagels. First use a pan to toast the bagels. Then put on slices of precooked bacon on the bagel. Next, cut slices of cheese from a block of cheddar and put it on the bacon. Finally, put it in the pan upside down to melt the cheese.

Good job guys! Love this video. Here's another easy trail food idea for ya'll to try- Knorr Spanish Rice and add Jack's Organic Kidney Beans to it. The beans come in a small box already hydrated and ready to eat. Simply add to the rice side. Makes a hearty, yummy meal! 😋

    Boes wanna hear mah foood?
Rice, cook it. Rehydrate the salmon and tomatoes. Mix. Put on pan.. Cook. Nice..
    I got another one..
Smashed potatoes, cook it. Rehydrate ground beef. Then brown some flour on a pan and when it is brown mix with water. There! Smashed potatoes with ground beef sauce.
    And for the third...
Rehydrate some tuna.. Add cooked rice... Add some rehydrated vegetables (tomato, cucumber, and other) mix and season. Tadah

Shepards Pie ... mix veggies meat and gravy then put the potatoes on top. Also, Just a thought, could you somehow invert your stove to "brown" the potatoes before serving? Hmm? Maybe too much trouble for the trail? Just thinking.

To get those scalloped potatoes hydrated, hit them with some water in the morning or after lunch.
For your shepherd's pie, hydrate the ground beef and veggies with extra water, then use it to put the gravy mix in. Since it'll be very thick sprinkle over a layer of the instant potatoes pour the water over them and just let it soak in.

I like the odd taste of dehydrated potato slices like in au gratin, scalloped and hamburger helpers. Just something about them. I hate the odd taste in Pillsbury biscuits and rolls.

August 25, 2019---Thanks for the video cooking tips. Saw one video where a guy mixed a package of instant potatoes with Ramen noodles in a Ziplock FREEZER bag. Use regular Ziplock bags and you'll get a hole in it from the heat. Said it wasn't bad even cold. You also might try adding something to the instant gravy. Just made a batch of it to put on some my fried taters I had as part of my supper, but I also fried a couple an ounce or so of Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage and only using 1 cup of water instead of the 2 it says on the instructions. Normally I had 1 cup water and 1 cup milk, but was out of milk and don't like soupy gravy. Or a small can of mushrooms, minus the water in the can.

Have you thought about making the recipe and then dehydrating it for the trail. Scalloped potatoes and little smokies.

  • @debprivate7840

Pretty sure you weren't supposed to make gravy, just mix the packet in for flavor.

I use the gravy and mash potatoes on the trail. I just add the gravy to the mash potatoes add boiling water and the gravy adds flavor to the mash potatoes.

The concept of this video is a great idea! We plan on doing something similar with the kids. So far, we have just been doing Knorr Sides with packaged chicken breast and instant mashed potatoes. We recently purchased a dehydrator and hope to start making our own backpacking meals soon.

Late here, but try no cook pudding. For a breakfast mix per directions, add granola (some fruit too). Also can be a great desert (rehydrate some bananas, add pudding mix, wait 5 minutes). Bonus is NO COOK (just cold water). I'll mix up breakfast before bed sometimes and wake to yummy pudding while making coffee.

Potatoes always go on the top of shepherd's pie, not the bottom... Great ideas though!

  • @GarouLady

My favorite recipe is Africian PB chicken soup. 1/2 can of 5 oz diced tomatoes with green chilies, 5 oz canned chicken, 1 cup of chicken stock with a salt free chicken buillion added to up the chicken taste, a tablespoon of Knorr vegetable mix, and 2-4 tablespoons of PB. Heat to boiling. I sometimes add more PB. As for the recipes I would have boiled the 2nd recipe with the scallop tater. For the shepherd's pie do the beef and veggies first, add the mashed tater flakes, then put gravy and a small amount of cheese on the top.

Hey guys awesome video just a quick question for you so it seems like you cook a lot in your pots do you keep the pots away from your a tents at night and backpack? Do keep them in with your food or what do you do? Seems like there's a lot of food residue that can sit in it. So what do you do with your your pot and pan set is my question and thank you?

Keep each of the Shepherds Pie ingredients in a separate ziplock bag. Add boiling water directly to each bag. It helps if you have a larger pot cozy to put all the bags in. Then put them together when ready. Add the mashed potatoes at the end of course. It's still more work than a lot of recipes but on a longer trip would really break up the monotony. And if you're not up to it just dump it all together.

    • @SchillBrothersOutdoors
      @SchillBrothersOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah I think that’s the solution here, we’ll see what happens

    • @jamesmoorhouse5265
      @jamesmoorhouse5265 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I occurs to me you could also put the ingredients together on individual plates rather then trying to put it together in one large one. Saves messing up a large plate and keeps the dish presentable till the last bite.

Another simple way to do the shepherd's pie is re-hydrate a serving from Mountain house #10 can of vegetable stew w/beef along with instant mashed potatoes. Pour on gravy if you need it. Also, your wives are great. Most wives would have thought you guys were just silly.

Shaken, not stirred! "Not terrible" haha, not exactly a ringing endorsement =) Maybe once every few trips? I may have to experiment with that shepherd's pie, it looked pretty tasty. You can sub in pepperoni for the jerky or lil smokies in about any of those dishes, good stuff.
