he used to frustrate me b/c he was prone to fumbling very very early on...but i had zero idea at the time how stupid it was to complain about that kickoff returns will never be the same again because of how freaking good he was. That missed kick return he had against the Giants on primetime is burned into my memory
Devin Hester is the reason I fell in love with football. Played the same position & getting punt/kick returns. always wanted #23 but everyone took it fast
A pet peeve of mine is when people only talk about his 20 returns and never bring up the 200 returns he had for major gains, even if he didn't end up in the endzone. Then he had more called back. I'm so grateful to have been able to watch this player growing up.
Exactly! Someone online compared Hester to Nolan Ryan.....where Ryan had 6 no hitters. But how many 1 hitters, 2 hitters, 3 hitters did Nolan Ryan have?
I mention the same when discussing Hester. He had another 30 returns that we very close to being TDs .He put the bears in FG range just by stepping on the field.
The near misses. The call baccs. You HAD to watch every return..... In the Hall of Fame of course Urlacher will be chasing after Hester on return but someone like Larry Allen will be out there trying to blocc for Hester to score. Sayers would blocc for Hester as well
It wasn't even his TDs and long runs he made that truly made him a legend, it was the fact that teams had to kick away from him, it was the fact that he literally changed the rules on returning the ball...It was the psychological aspect of the game and the way other teams had to course correct because of him.
The Bears would have won Super Bowl XLI if the Colts didn't start kicking away from him i vividly remember a game (i think it was the Vikings or the Lions) who literally took an "Illegal Procedure" penalty giving the Bears the ball at hteir own 40 because they didn't want to kick to Hester lmao
GOAT RB most would say Sweetness. GOAT returner, def 23. So here's hoping Caleb breaks Stroud's rookie records, Mahomes winning consistency record, and Brady's longevity (being good of course) record.
@@CozyHumanoid the NFL lost a lawsuit to the violent hits on kickoffs..look it up ... that led to that.. furthermore..if the league keeps changing the rules to make it easier to score points..why do ppl keep making the dumbest argument that it would make a exciting scoring play harder to do if that's all they want now... passing.. scoring and higher scores... that plays into that doesn't it? Devin Hester made 1 of the boring moments of a football game into one of the most exciting moments of a football game. No matter what team you were on when Devin Hester was kicked the ball, you paid attention. It was amazing to watch him. He is also amazing in this community and his football Camps were some of the best. Congrats Man of God #23!
Man, Hester was a brightspot in a very dark era of football. Dude was electric. Before Hester, people would take bathroom breaks on kickoffs and punts. He made a statement his first game and made sure we couldnt do that anymore or we'd miss something special. Well deserved, Bear Down.
Absolute legend. There will never be another like him. Blessed to be from Chicago we got some special teams and had a lot of special players. Chi town up bear down! 🐻
Hester was the first to state that he would let the incoming kickoff team determine his running strategy. He would look for who over-committed, and let the play evolve in front of him while improvising his running lanes at the same time. Dude was next level.
Wow!!!!! That Bears Draft War Room. Stuff like you brings tears in your eyes. That season and then especially Hall of Fame!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Goooooooo Devin Hester!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
38 years of watching football I never totally lost my freaking mind like I did when Devin ran that kick back in the SB I still get goosebumps everytime I see a replay my only NFL game I ever have been to was the Arizona game that year still the greatest game I've ever watched in my life thank you Devin Hester Hall of Famer Bear Down Baby!!!!!!
Hester made the nfl reinvent the wheel.when it comes to kick/punt returns..been a bears fan since 94 ,and that was one heck of a time to bear down.mid 2000s bears freaking RULED!!!!!!
Legend is a word banded around too easily these days. Hester, however, is a true legend and the greatest returner of all time. His enshrinement is richly deserved.
Yeah I remember where I was when Devin Hester was selected by the Chicago Bears. Stuff like that stays with you in life!!!!!! Thank you guys for this TH-cam video!!!!
God bless you Devin thank you for the morries it's been a wonderful journey. I'm glad you're a Chicago BEAR truly one of the greatest. And a great human being you deserve to be with the rest of the bears family greats. 🐻 Canton HOF 2024
When opposing teams were afraid of kicking the football to you because of your ability to score when you had room to run?! You KNEW you were a legend in the making! And Devin Hester was just that guy! CONGRATULATIONS and God bless you!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
A core part of my childhood was watching Hester in his rookie year returning kicks for TDs. Dude was just must watch TV at the time whenever he got the ball
This man was blessed with three intangibles: Natural Athletic Ability, Intense Mental Focus, and Commitment to Training. He had that inner vision and motivation to manifest and grow into the best that ever was at that position. AND Coach Smith turned him into a very dangerous receiver as well as an effective defensive player, turning interceptions from "gunslinger" QB Jay Cutler into touchdowns.

Just started watching this. Another initial memory is October ‘07 Va Minnesota at Soldier Field. It ended up being Hester vs the great rookie, Adrian Petersen. Hester brought back a punt for 90 plus yards and Petersen went nuts as well. In my mind, it was HOF vs HOF. Much respect, Mr. Hester
When the rules are changed because of one player. That player should be 1st ballot hall of fame. Hester is one of a kind legend 🐻⬇️
🐾⬆️🐻⬇️ Scottish Bear!
🎯🎯🎯
Exactly, he redefined the position😮
Player Saftey is the reason not Devin. He's 1 of 1 but nfl killed one of the best openings to a sporting event.

The man that single handedly changed the game. We love you #23!!
