Car and Driver tried to work with a local technical college in Ann Arbor to make a Mazdaspeed5. I thought that idea was the coolest. As I recall, they ran into way more computer issues than the students could handle. They may also have struggled to squeeze that motor in. Maybe in the modern day, with a fairly simple standalone, this would be easier?

I've worked out of vans for the last 25 years and every one had an active sound system, slightly lowered ride height with poly bushings in the antiroll bars, stiffest shocks/struts available, computer/tranny tune and whatever mods were available, typically header back. They weren't race cars but it made the work days and commutes more entertaining lol

Dajibans rock! Dodge offered a ‘street van’ option in the late 70s complete with chrome side pipes that today are rare beasts. Unfortunately, these Dodge vans are an endangered species due to ‘designed obsolescence’ particularly having many electrical issues. I’m on my second B-van that loves to consume ignition coils for some unexplainable reason.

I have a 1990 Dodge B250 van. 318 V8. OD auto. Pretty much factory stock mechanically. But mine is a high-top conversion van. Plush, burgundy velvet interior with actual oak wood trim and panels. Reclining, swivel captains chairs. The rear bench folds out into a bed with the push of a button. Blinds & curtains on the big tinted windows. Deep-pile carpet. It's a living room on wheels. I love my van. It has about 300K miles on it and still runs strong. Not entirely sure of the mileage since the ODO is stuck at 230K and it was like that before the previous owner had it. Sure, it has a few imperfections. One armrest on the front passenger seat is worn through and a bit of the metal is showing. There's a bit of rust ahead of each rear wheel. It will smoke a bit if you hammer the throttle. So yeah, it needs a bit of work. But its my weekend road warrior. I took it from PA, all the way to Yellowstone, across Wyoming and N/S Dakotas and back. Ran flawlessly. 70 to 75 MPH most of the way. Guzzled gas like my ex guzzled booze, though. Only one issue cropped up on the entire trip, and that was the oil-pressure sending unit went bad. I swapped it out at an O'Reilleys in Laurel MT, did an oil/filter change while I was at it and was on my way. When I get the money, I plan to take it up Pikes Peak. Not going after any records, I just want to add another sticker to the back.
I plan of doing the body work myself, and probably sending it off to get the engine rebuilt. But I can't complain about my big ol' van.

The crazy thing is, the basic platform is very surprisingly good to drive. A Magnum 360 of this vintage punches way above it's weight, and these vans have very responsive suspension tuning.
I put a lot of miles on a 96 15 passenger, and even it was fun to drive and relatively quick. A half ton short wheelbase version with a mild 360 and some suspension work would freak a lot of people out!!

The first vehicle I learned to drive was a 1992 Dodge B350 extended, typically referred to as a church bus. I drifted it at 65 mph up an on-ramp, got it up on two wheels, and did 100+ mph, all at the age of 16 while driving it on the back roads of WV. You just needed to learn how to throw the weight around. The soft suspension allowed for quite a bit of movement to get the rear end moving around, thankfully it had quite powerful brakes. Since I learned on that, everything else was incredibly easy.

Everyone bags them, or takes them to the dunes, but I think it would just be too fun. That said, I can machine, but I can't weld, so I doubt that'll be happening anytime soon.

I took out the rear seating and declothed the interior completely, took out all the rear seat belts and column plastics and I could pass just about anything at the local track that was stock, not everything but almost, got a lot of laughs and looks and I laughed a lot at the looks I'd get as I passed other drivers in things I shouldn't have had any business passing, low with heavy duty anti sway bar on some cheap track tires, so much fun, ended up blowing the motor going head to head with a farm truck on a quarter mile strip 🤣

Had to strip the insulation out of the doghouse to make it fit, so I’d burn my leg on it. Had to put a rolled up towel between the tin and my leg. When I was a student at Road Atlanta Saab Viggen Flight Academy, the race car driver instructors got us VERY quickly at the edge of physics in 15 passenger vans everywhere we needed to go, via the track. The only time I'd ever been scared as a passenger but I didn't let it show. We probably made them sick on the skidpad in the Saabs and they wanted to return the favor. They make the Mount Washington auto road van drivers seem driving miss daisy.

Strictly speaking, the passenger model - which you are in - is the Club WAGON, not the Club Van. Taut handling is not folded into this lump from the factory, so if the handling is anything better than "hey, go that way when you feel like it," it's a huge step up from what I experienced behind the wheel of a similar 15-pass over years and literally 100,000+ miles.
Mine came with the very relaxed, understressed 220hp 5.9/360 "Magnum" which was a magnum in name only. There are mountains of power to be found in that mill, and whatever you can squeeze out of the block, the Torqueflite will probably handle it. Exciting it was not, but it was bulletproof - and exciting is within reach while still retaining most, if not all of the reliability.
