He was brutally tortured for 70 years. He's showed some level of guilt accidentally blowing that building up (hence doing more dr*gs to escape reality), and obviously has deep empathy with how he showed remorse over countess betraying him. His "toxic masculinity" is unfair to label as he has been on ice for 70 years with 40's ideology. He never showed an attitude of stubbornness to learn, or treat every one like his is above them. He was doing a mission he was tasked with, something he always would make sure of was finished, things went sideways and he still tried to keep up his agreement. Like he said, "I'm not a bad guy". He wants to redeem himself, but needs a handler. In comes Mallory to rehabilitate him for her projects.
