Thank you! The comparison of the different porosity of hair really clarified things for me. Would love to hear what ingredients in products we should look for to address individual hair porosity types.
Awesome video! When I was following the curly girl method my hair started to lose its curl pattern and became over moisturized. After finding you, and really understanding my porosity, I no longer have the problem of over moisturized hair. Not to mention the curl pattern is the best I've seen it! Thank you for all you, and Dennis, do for us.🤗🤗
I definitely experienced over moisturized hair with the Curly girl method. I totally gave up conditioner for some time, then eventually experimented with different ways to use conditioner as my hair began to get dry and brittle. Now I use conditioner to detangle before shampooing (I detangle most of the way before ever getting my hair wet but there are always still knots left) and even sometimes leave the conditioner on the ends of my hair while shampooing the roots. The results are really beautiful, bouncy curls. It’s all about experimentation, and doing what works for YOU.
Can you do a video on what to do with high and medium porosity hair that dries and goes frizzy super quickly. My hair is similar to yours with medium porosity at the front hair line with high porosity at the back; although my curl pattern is not as tight as yours. If I don’t put products in my hair while it is dripping wet, I’m left with a frizzy mess with little definition. It doesn’t feel dry or break so I don’t think it is damaged high porosity . Thanks, loving your videos, I’ve been binge watching for days, and have been trying to follow your recommendations. Keep up the great work educating us curlies 😊
Thank you, thank you, thank you so much!! Hearing this explanation helped me to FINALLY understand what's wrong with my hair!! Based on your explanation, I have extreme low porosity hair to the point that it's dry and hard. Now I feel like I am equipped to find the products and techniques that will help my hair become healthy. FINALLY! Something makes sense! I NEEDED this!! I've been struggling with my dry, parched, frizzy hair for a long, long time. This information means so much to me!! Thank you so much!!
Almost done watching but when you said “only straighter and wavier hair textures will get weighed down by heavier products” it all made sense. Been natural for over 10 years but been protective styling most of the time and recently decided to go full time wearing it curly and coming back to all this high and low porosity stuff had me sooo confused but thank you for finally making it all click so I can continue to care for my tighter curl pattern without the misinformation. THANK YOU
I used to douse my hair in moisturizer thinking this would help my hair be more wavy/curly but boy how I was wrong. You have taught me so much. I love your minimalistic approach. I wish I could afford to have you cut my hair but whenever I get the chance I will. I also love that you're in Miami cause that's where I'm originally from! I'm currently in Gainesville going to school! Btw love that shirt on you it's beautiful!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for explaining this so well. I love knowing and understanding the science of my hair and you've taught me so much over the past few weeks that I've been watching your videos. I'm not only on a path to take better care of my hair but also finding that I can have wash and go hair! It has always taken HOURS for my hair to air dry completely which led to decades of hot blow drying and other heat tools to make my fried hair look decent. I started on a curly hair/natural hair journey last fall and your education is taking it many steps further. The freedom healthy hair brings is truly amazing.
I really appreciate that you broke this down into a comprehensive visual and verbal explanation. I have read several opinions and listened to several videos and no one explanation or opinion has been the same. This is the first video I have seen that really breaks down the different types of porosity and what it actually means vs whether you have or don't have that particular hair type. Super helpful well rounded video!
Your videos are amazing and have given me a better understanding of my hair. I always assumed I had high porosity, but your explanations of characteristics of high porosity are spot on. Nobody else I know have mentioned them either! My hair sticks together and drips for days if I let it. Thanks for your dedication for getting this information and your experiences out to the public! Much love
I am SO thankful for your helpful videos! I am about ready to give up on my curly hair because it is limp for some reason, but your videos give me hope and encouragement to figure it out. PLEASE consider adding diagrams of the hair follicle explaining the cortex, etc in your book that is much anticipated. Thank you!!
I wish I lived close to your salon!!! Thank you for the information you have been helping me. About a month into using low poo delight shampoo and the original one condition and I’ve noticed a significant amount of build up almost gone...I say almost bc I used the mousse from not your mothers ONE TIME and it brought it back. So back to the regimen and just styling with b’leave-in.
Thank you so much Stephanie. Now I have to get use to saying I have high porosity hair. Wish I could go to you for my hair😥. Good thing you’re online 😊.
You've mentioned it's possible to have DHP and healthy porosity on the same hair strand (e.g. damaged ends & healthy new growth). Is the cortex continuous along the hair strand? If so, can damaged ends "leach" moisture from the rest of the hair strand even though it has a functioning cuticle?
Cool. That is just what I was wondering about fine strand hair. Reading seemed like there was a ton of overlap between fine-strands and high porosity hair.
Thank you for your videos and wealth of information. Your knowledge has improved my curls like no other tips or products. I had given up hope of understanding my hair. It didn't fit with what others told me. Curly hair was new to me after having my second daughter who has curly hair. It was her gift to me but going from waves to curl has been a struggle until now. Thank you!
I cannot tell you how much I love your video esp. with the visuals! I had to let you know and I don't even usually comment on anything on youtube!! :-)
Thank you! My hair is very thick, coarse, dense, and permed. It wets very easily and tangles horribly while shampooing. It starts to dry quickly while I put products in it, but takes like 10hrs to dry. I follow cg. It’s wavy on own, but I wanted curls. I just don’t know products to use. Any suggestions? Please and thanks!!
So glad you added that last bit about DHP (my phone now recognizes DHP in the auto type 😂) I actually did a quick rewind to hear that bit again. So can you give me an example of a deva product line up for DHP? What type of products would have more control like you suggest. As always you are greatly appreciated. I’ve never had this many good hair days in a row. Know there is tons of love sent your way!!
Hey! I just recently (a little over a month ago) started treating my hair like a curly hair. What do I mean? From childhood, I had been treating my hair like it was a straight hair - using products and methods for straight hair. I had my hair professionally straightened (relax, rebond) as soon as I was old enough to. But around 5 years ago, I stopped straightening my hair and grew it out naturally. However, I was still using products for straight hair and not treating my hair like I should. So even though I'm in my 30's, I'm a baby when it comes to curly hair. So I started watching all these TH-cam videos for curly hair until I got all too confused and started to think, man! It's such hard work! Now really, my concern is this: I still can't figure out my porosity! My hair takes a looong time to get wet but also take forever to dry. It tangles easily and gets frizzy very quickly. Please help me. I'm desperate. Sometimes I just want to give up on this curly hair journey. 😭 -Abee from the UK
Curl Couple conquers again! :) So, does that mean the 'wet stretch test' is bunk? Every curl group advises it is the best way to see if hair needs protein or moisture. Take a wet strand of hair and stretch, if it breaks immediately then moisture is needed, if it stretches some and breaks then protein is needed, if it stretches and stretches then it's over moisturized and if it stretches and returns then it's normal.
Please do not break or cut off your hair for the sake of “understanding” it’s needs. There are SO MANY problems with that test. How hard do you pull??? Are we all the same strength? After how much time does it break for it to need protein or moisture? It’s insanity I tell you!!! Do not BUY IN! 💜💜
@@StephanieMero So happy to hear this from you!! Honestly, I hate that test! It's suggested to use the hair that falls out in the shower or sheds off naturally. I don't know the origin but it's suggested everywhere and I am so glad you are saying to stop it! Thank you for sharing your expert advice! 💖
I am so happy I found you. You just make sense! I like to keep my life as simple as possible, and I am pragmatic, if things make sense then that’s what I’m going to do. Thank you for making sense. 😊 🙏🏾 2019, my hair is going to flourish!!!!
hi I think the sponges use has FINALLY helped me understand porosity and actually its the opposite of what I thought before...thank you so much!! also the above site links are showing as 404 error. Is that me or are the sites no longer up?
Hi Stephanie. Thank you for all of this good information. Your videos make so much sense. I'm not going to watch other curly girl videos anymore. It was too much information and too many products. I'm going back to the basics with DevaCurl and following your recommendations. I'm in the Miami area and I'm wondering the name of your new salon and where it's located. If you've already announced it, I somehow missed it. Please let us know more about it in a future video. Thank you so much for your passion and your knowledge.
I would think hair texture matters a lot as well. Like super fine hair will appear to dry quicker than coarse hair cause it holds more since a thicker diameter.
When I tried using the build up buster on my xtreme low porosity it didn’t remove my build up or I used it wrong I’m not sure...I wound up having to use a sulfate but now it’s excepting moisture again so I will go back to using low poo 😩 I almost gave up but when you said on live you don’t have to worry about build up if you aren’t using products that cause build up I thought I better give it another chance since I stripped it with sulfates and it’s behaving differently my curl pattern came back immediately after I went back to washing with low poo without build up
I love how your videos are so ambiguous to curl pattern and helpful for everyone not just specific types it has helped me help family members and friends with there hair too 💜
Saying everyone with curly hair has the same needs is as silly as saying everyone with brown hair has the same needs! Glad I could help everyone and that you are back on track with your own hair!
I knew it!! My hair is fine with limp hair that “drops” as the day goes on. I always felt my hair had too much moisture in it, and have to use hairspray on it to “dry” it out. My scalp is itchy and irritated at the moment, so I put some black castor oil on it last night. I was going to do ApHogee two step tonight, because it’s blonde, from light mousey lifted to honey blonde, level 5 to about level 8 (from box dye, I know, it just seemed quicker and easier). It’s always been “fluffy” and won’t hold it’s curl/waves without product. Do you think protein treatment is a good or a bad idea?
Thank you for all the educational videos with accurate info. My question about porosity is that I thought straight hair had cuticles that naturally laid flat making the hair smooth and shiny. If highly textured curls are prone to low porosity and straight hair is prone to high porosity, I don’t understand how straight hair can be smooth and shiny with closed cuticles AND high porosity? Thanks for the explanation!!!
Thank you for your explanation.... Now that I’m understanding more about my hair type; what do you recommend to treat hair that wets quickly but looses moisture.? it lacks shine and bounce :(
I’m a wavy/curly med-high porosity. I’m 80% grey in the front & 20% grey in the back. 18mo into growing out my greys & no heat (flat iron) since 9/1/18. Followed the CGM until I found you then stopped drinking the kool-aid!! 4/1/19 I started using your recommended products exclusively. My hair feels dry, like it’s not getting enough moisture. Any suggestions? Thank you so much for what you do. I no longer point curly/wavy girls to CGM groups....I point them to YOU!♥️ 6/9/19 edit: I switched to the no-poo zero lather cleanser & only use B’Leave-in & ultra defining gel. MUCH better for my hair which I believe (from your videos) is on the lower end of natural medium porosity.
I'm so confused about porosity. I thought I was low because it takes forever to color or lighten, and takes a bit to get soaking wet buuuut my hair literally takes hours to dry. So does that mean high porosity? Can you have high porosity but resistance to color?
If you could recommend a good conditioner for DHP, would you say DC One Condition Delight? Or just regular One Condition? I’m still a little unsure about it for DHP. Love what you’re doing for us!!! 💕
LOVE your videos! Based on your info I think I have high porosity damaged curls. I’m on DevaCurl exclusively and use the DeLite line for the weigh less moisture, but then I need a LOT of control for my damaged ends (over-lightened). I’ve been trying a few combinations of their styling products, but haven’t come to one that keeps the definition of the curl from root to tip through full air drying or diffusing. Any tips?
I'm not sure where I got my damage from, but lots of hair loss for me. I have washed my hair every 7-10 days for YEARS! I don't get oily hair, I spread my own sebum through my hair with a bbb. And scalp massages with my own scalp oil. I only really brush my hair in the shower or when wet. Are AG products pricey? Am I going to have to cut my hair, cause I think I should.?? If you want pic, just pm me on fb or Twitter. Thanks for your information and knowledge on DC
So my hair is how you explained high porosity, I have a lose curl pattern yet my hair is really dry with split ends??(not due to heat or bleaching) why would that be?
I have high porosity hair. It gets wet very easily but equally loses water or moisture easily, therefore will get dry and have split ends and breaks easily. The idea is to moisturize your hair as much as it needs plus use oils/butters to seal depending on your hair type.
I just wanted to put it out there that chemicals and harsh treatments, bleaches, dyes, or heat from styling tools are not the only possible ways to get significant damage on your hair. You can also get it from using too many sulfates too often on your hair. BUT, depending on the climate where you live, weather can also contribute to damaged hair. For the longest time, I was so confused and frustrated as to why I had damaged hair. I gave up using sulfates and silicones. I never dyed, bleached, or had any chemical treatments done on my hair. And I rarely used any heat tools on my hair. Also, long ago, I had stopped using traditional towels to dry my hair. And I sleep on satin pillow cases. So, I could not understand why my hair was so super dry, rough, and damaged on some parts. It's not what I eat because when I touch the roots they're smooth like healthy hair should be. But yet, the follicle of my hair was rough? I thought only damaged hair was rough? But, how can I have damaged hair when I don't subject it to those things? And if my hair isn't damaged from those harmful chemicals, I don't need protein treatments, right? WRONG!! I feel like the curly hair community has lead me to believe that "the only way for me to have damaged hair and need protein treatments is if I subjected it to dyes, bleaches, chemical treatments, and/or heat tools." This is what lead me to be confused as to why my hair was the way it was. Dry, rough, and damaged - yes, _damaged_ , despite me not using harsh treatments on my hair. Why? Because of the climate where I live. Where I live, it is a very dry climate, and during the summer, it's a dry heat and it gets very, very hot. It can get up to 110+ F (43 for my non-American friends) some days. I think it's the environment because I've noticed that only the outer layers of my hair are damaged, while the inner layers feel healthy and smooth. Now that I know that, I do in fact need protein for my hair, at least on the parts that are damaged by the sun. And it has certainly helped. Curly hair community, don't get it twisted: Chemicals, dyes, bleaches and hair tools are NOT the only things that can lead to damaged hair. Environmental factors such as climate and weather can contribute to damaged hair as well! Please let everybody know!
I think my hair is absorbing to much water because I don’t have volume and I loos my curl pattern now look more like waves . And also I have some baby hair that turn dry and freeze I don’t know what to do .
My hair is DHP what can I do to help the damage. I really don't get tangled I just feel like my curls are very stringy like. I shampoo with DC low poo and rarely use the one condition. I dry all the water I can out of it and apply believe and frizz free foam. My curls are just not what they were and need help since having it lightened. With it being DHP does that mean more that water can get caught in my curls, or is that even possible?
I had no idea low porosity could be caused by cheap ingredients though I feel that I've always had low porosity hair . I've cut it super short and still struggled with my hair being dry. Do you suggest high end products for lp hair? What do you recommend
At least in normal light settings it probably wouldn’t appear transparent. If you shine light through hair (flashlight, sunlight) I imagine hair w/o a medulla would look more transparent
I'm more confused after watching your video. I have 4a/4b medium density hair but I've still not been able to figure out my porosity because I'm overwhelmed by all information I see online. Your response would be highly appreciated 🙏🏽. Thanks.
💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕 I have a tight curl pattern that is completely new growth. No heat or chemical damage. My products eh they aren't the best or the worst lol it takes so long to dry, but it is so short I can't tell how long it takes to get wet... I feel like I'm med/ low generally, but I'm going to keep working on it until I know for sure ty for these vids they make so much sense other vids dont sound right and they feel too general. Tysm 💕💕💕💕💕💜
HELLO. I am of south asian descent. straight black hair but also waves. can you tell me my porosity please? Thanks. My hair gets wet FAST and dries FAST.
My hair is like a straw broom 🧹. So dry and damaged, all my life my hair has been in that way. It doesn’t grow normally. When I was younger I loved Pantene but my hair was getting worse and worse, then Fructis, TRESemme, and again Fructis (parabens free) one year ago. I feel so sad. I’m having less and less hair, I have some parts just with short baby hair. It looks like I were bald. When I learned that they were so toxic I bought a shampoo for babies called GAIA, I’ve been using it 4 months and also a Tea Tree conditioner (Thursday Plantation) and once a week I’m applying a masque that I recently learned about it, Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil. The masque is working, I have beautiful curls where the hair is not completely dry. And where my hair is dry the curls last 1 day. I cut my hair 3 years ago because it wasn’t growing, I’m thinking to do the same again and just use Shea Moisture products since they are more natural. 😞 My hair has a low, low, low porosity at the moment. 😢
Curly Hair Myths Exposed with The Curl Ninja what’s the best way to help with this problem. My hair gets extremely frizzy in humid climates. I can handle the frizz here in Manitoba , it’s cooler , even when it’s raining the frizz is a better frizz , 😜.
Love your videos and I thank you so much for sharing all of your knowledge and experience with us! I'm sure my stylist is grateful for my getting some solid advice too! So I've got naturally high porosity hair with I'm sure some color damaged high porosity as I get professional color treatments (dark brown) to cover greys (not quite ready to accept that yet!) though my hair stylist says it's very healthy hair. I've been using the salon products for curl hair for many years but just discovered last night that they contain amine-functionalized sulfates and was considering getting the Build up Buster from DevaCurl... was wondering if the Build up Buster will strip my color?
I was for a long time thinking I had natural low porosity because it took awhile to be able to absorb in ie shampoo lathers or to absorb in water (need a few applications of water to become fully wet). Rehearing this again lol, it would make sense- since my hair contains loose curl patterns ie predominantly S shapes or honestly all curl shapes- avg.density though it is also dense if comparing it with the quarter size example when in a ponytail : the terminology for hair typing entirely is a process 😂😂😂- though it would make sense if it contained a spectrum of high porosity on my ends & medium. Update, I actually experimented how GreenBeauty on here (youtube) observed her hair for curl pattern typing, though did the same method for water porosity checking. I split my hair into sections from bottom left, bottom right, middle left, middle right, top left and right, and personally also made sure to check my upper crown's left & right, and bangs' left & right as well. Applied warmer temp'ed water per sections, and took notes as I went through them. Results were, surprisingly a natural medium porosity, with high porosity and/or signs or damage being present on my bottom right ends (or it just got soaking wet from application of water: Ima watch the porosity pool test again 😂🙏🏼), and I was left confused with my top left area. My notes there were: "Frizz (mild), imo damage is present (then again frizz does not mean damage- it means water swelling), does get wet but also medium. Isn't overtly. Damp.* = Since it quickly dries. And I used higher heat." Will be redoing it there to make sure. I assume both sides on my top section is normal/medium porosity.
Thank you! The comparison of the different porosity of hair really clarified things for me. Would love to hear what ingredients in products we should look for to address individual hair porosity types.

hi I think the sponges use has FINALLY helped me understand porosity and actually its the opposite of what I thought before...thank you so much!! also the above site links are showing as 404 error.
Product suggestions for low porosity, low density, chemical damaged 2b wavy hair?
Does backcoming cause dry high porosity hair & broken, split hair?thank you......
I would think straight hair would more than likely have normal porosity.
I no longer point curly/wavy girls to CGM groups....I point them to YOU!♥️
6/9/19 edit: I switched to the no-poo zero lather cleanser & only use B’Leave-in & ultra defining gel.
Thank you! I'm 1 month in CGM and so confused. This video helped a lot!
If you could recommend a good conditioner for DHP, would you say DC One Condition Delight? Or just regular One Condition? I’m still a little unsure about it for DHP. Love what you’re doing for us!!! 💕
Any products recommendations for damaged low porosity hair?
LOVE your videos! Based on your info I think I have high porosity damaged curls. I’m on DevaCurl exclusively and use the DeLite line for the weigh less moisture, but then I need a LOT of control for my damaged ends (over-lightened). I’ve been trying a few combinations of their styling products, but haven’t come to one that keeps the definition of the curl from root to tip through full air drying or diffusing. Any tips?
Would you recommend a steamer for 4c hair? I have low porosity hair. If so, how often? Once a week?
Great video ! You nailed it !
FINALLYYY I GET IT THANK YOUUUU 🙏🏾
Are teresemme shampoo and conditioner for curly hair good?
im 3a with low poros, water beads up on it and i have to massage product to let it in and my hair loves when i clarify.
Thank you!😍 Is there any other product then Devacurl to trye? Can't get it in Norway 😑😓
Hi Stephanie... I use quality shampoo and conditioner and no heat and my hair absorbs water easily But It drys fast! What do you suggest I do?
What are the cheap synthetic surfactants

I had no idea low porosity could be caused by cheap ingredients though I feel that I've always had low porosity hair . I've cut it super short and still struggled with my hair being dry. Do you suggest high end products for lp hair? What do you recommend
I'd like to know more about hair that has a medulla and hair that doesn't. Without it, does your hair appear transparent?
dm4859 No, because it’s the cortex that contains the melanin that gives your hair it’s color.
At least in normal light settings it probably wouldn’t appear transparent. If you shine light through hair (flashlight, sunlight) I imagine hair w/o a medulla would look more transparent
Thanks for such clear explanations👍👍☺
I'm more confused after watching your video. I have 4a/4b medium density hair but I've still not been able to figure out my porosity because I'm overwhelmed by all information I see online. Your response would be highly appreciated 🙏🏽. Thanks.
My hair was frizzy straight then I used NYM and it’s so wavy😍😍
💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
I have a tight curl pattern that is completely new growth.
Gr88 video ... 👌
Thanks!!
Very good explanation, thank you so much!
How do we know what our hair porosity is?
My hair is like a straw broom 🧹. So dry and damaged, all my life my hair has been in that way. It doesn’t grow normally. When I was younger I loved Pantene but my hair was getting worse and worse, then Fructis,
TRESemme, and again Fructis (parabens free) one year ago.
My hair has a low, low, low porosity at the moment. 😢
Wow you're an angel thank you
So , does high porosity hair get frizzy cause it absorbs all the moisture in the air ?
The cuticle is more open so it’s easier for it to release moisture in humidity 💋
Curly Hair Myths Exposed with The Curl Ninja Why would the hair release moisture in humid air?
Curly Hair Myths Exposed with The Curl Ninja what’s the best way to help with this problem. My hair gets extremely frizzy in humid climates. I can handle the frizz here in Manitoba , it’s cooler , even when it’s raining the frizz is a better frizz , 😜.
Great explanation. Thanks 😗
Hello! I’m a fellow curl specialist and curious where you are getting your information from.
How to know when hair is broken ?
Thanks!!
🙀👍🏽👍🏽
