I don't get it. I would've wanted to vote J Maya if I was Dee and Julie. Thats very true. Sifu is a wildcard, hard to trust him in an alliance because its hard to get him playing the same game as you. I think he's a great throwaway to bring into the merge though. if you got numbers you cant stand tall on them or youre too big of a target, you need someone you can throw out before you get blindsided with force. I think regarding the question of why Kaleb and Emily didn't buy into Sean trying to make amends after tribal - it seemed like he waaaay oversold it and it came off more as a desperate game move than actually making social amends. Lots of blame shifting and pretending things were a lot peachier than they obviously were. Plus, Sean saying he would've liked to be in on the blindside just doesn't make sense from Kaleb's perspective. Kaleb knows that he was the original blindside target and that telling Sean could've blown up his own survival plan. I'd say altogether it felt like Sean was making amends only because he is "supposed to" without thinking about the nuances of the social shifts and game moves that just went down

They never mentioned wanting to win so they could fire; it was only to stop being losers, lol. Without fire, and with a less intense island experience overall, it would be easier to quit. The game isn’t worth the inconvenience without the bonding and more extreme suffering.

One thing I haven't heard people mention much was the chaos that Sean seems to have deliberately added into Reba. Not only did he quit, but he also voted for Dee and told Sifu about the planned blindside as he was leaving. If he did know that following the plan would lead to Sifu out that tribal and him out at the next, then Sean's move may have given Sifu his only chance to save himself and shake things up in the tribe. Also, his vote towards Dee could very well point Sifu towards figuring out who planned that blindside.

Is the game getting too soft, or are they choosing soft players. A little of both, maybe more the latter. Either way, the casting dept needs to do better. Like you mentioned, the shift from playing to win to playing for a journey, is part of it. As is the propensity for the "meta" hyper-awareness.
I don’t think Sean is “soft” for quitting, I think this narrative of calling the new era players soft is a little unfair (though yes, I do wish they’d go back to 39 days and the difficulty has been significantly reduced in these shorter seasons). I think it’s more that Sean wasn’t invested in the show or the experience to see the point of powering through, as was Hannah, which is a failure on casting’s part. They should be casting players that know what they’re getting themselves into, know it’s not gonna be a funfilled time and still want to go through it anyway. NaOnka and Kelly also played on a season with absolutely terrible weather, it was downpouring practically every day over there in Nicaragua so the quit is far more understandable. I don’t think they’d have quit if there had been some bright sunny days in between the rain.
I feel like maybe they should do a 3 day trial period where they have them camp out on a beach. Like that would weed out a lot of people who shouldn’t actually be there.

Totally agree with Fishbach and everyone else in the comments! I'm so mixed on this season so far. I feel like the editing and the 90 minute runtime have been great, but every single tribal outcome has left me baffled, frustrated, and just downright angry at times. Outcomes like Sabiyah's when people like Sean secretly don't even care to win are the exact reason we need a returnee season NOW. And while we're on the whole quitting thing, Survivor needs to make it more clear in the EDIT that it is in fact a QUIT moving forward. You should not be allowed to stay the whole 2-3 days between tribal, show up to tribal, talk aaaaaall through the tribal about your "journey" and how much you've grown, and then blindside all the other players' plans by "respectfully asking" that everyone write your name down that night because you want a goodbye, or to go out on your own terms, or because you want the honor and respect of Jeff snuffing out your torch rather than sending you on your way in shame and disapproval the way he used to. I get that in the past people have quit beforehand leaving us with tribal-less episodes, but to me it's so much more of a disappointment watching an entire tribal of suspense wasted like that.

And even if there's a punishment on the books for asking people to write your name down, there's nothing Jeff can do after someone says those words. He can't erase their memories or anything. Personally I don't think that producers need to overreact to the two quits this season. The Hannah quit was bad although in my opinion not too different from Jackson being forced out of the game in Season 42 due to his lithium use; even though he didn't quit, he was wrong to not wean himself off the drug before the game. Maybe they could ban nicotine from pregame Ponderosa so that you won't have future Hannah's battling symptoms from going cold turkey on nicotine use during the game. And then Sean's quit wouldn't have happened without Hannah quitting imo, and his was interesting in that I fully believe it was an extremely impulsive, emotional decision made in the moment and probably regretted almost immediately. Hannah partially justifying her quit by saying that her tribemates who wanted to be there deserved to stay more does make some sense, and that reasoning was floating in Sean's mind when he quit. Still, it's only 2 quits in 5 New Era seasons, so I don't think it's a huge issue, just annoying at the time.
40:00 No, it's not a "new challenge," Rob. The same challenge was used in season 39. In IoI, after the tribe swapped, there is an episode where Elaine got her "block-a-vote" advantage at the Immunity Challenge and it was the same "LIFT a CAGE across the course, then SHOOT a BALLS into HOOPS." The only difference was that in this season, the tribes started in the water, while s39, they had them in land the whole time. Dean and Jamal were the shooters for the Orange tribe, and Tommy and Aaron were for the new Vuku tribe (with Elaine). I believe this was the episode Jason went.
Survivor contestants using their experience as therapy and "self discovery" is nothing new. Thats fine up to a point. But, totally agree with Stephen about the selfishness and narcissism of players quitting. Love the show but this is not acceptable.

True, though I think that’s why the move on Sifu is odd here. J Maya and Sean were bonding so I think you nip that in the bud before you end up in a 2v2 situation (like happened on Lulu last episode), you’ll be able to save the Sifu boot if you go back to tribal since there’s clearly no love lost between him and J Maya.
Dee took the machete from Sifu at one point and said something like "put that back you're going to hurt yourself." In the next clip he preceded to play it like a guitar...again. He seems super annoying, I'm sure he's been pushing more buttons than has been shown.
I think the problem with what Sean did after tribal wasn't what he said it, but how he said it. even watching it read as fake to me. I feel like the whole "great job guys, no hard feelings" needs to be sold correctly for it work and that is not always easy
This younger generation has a lot of quitters and wimps in it this season. people reward this attitude and behavior so they get more people who say they can do hard things and then don’t.
You can’t say how you would react without fire/food (except fruit reward) for 9 days and going to tribal council 3 times…and then a 4th with a new tribe. I’m not justifying what they(Sean&Hannah) did, but I’d like to know from a psychologist how crazy this would make the majority of people.
I appreciate Stephen’s passion, but I’m with Rob on this one. The quit didn’t really bother me. I do feel like this situation is comparable to the Chet vote in Micronesia, where Ami and them wanted to make a move, but Chet asked to be voted out instead, and then Ami lost the numbers and was eliminated soon after. So this could have some short term consequences for Dee if they lose again. But given who else is on the tribe I just don’t see her going from that group of four. Unless they really get on her case for voting Sifu, I don’t think she’s lost her numbers.

Yes and no. Would you be okay if this show was legitimately rigged? Of course you wouldn't. There's a set of rules you expect to be followed when agreeing to go on the game. There is a degree of fairness expected. And Stephen was saying it's just about Dee. He was mentioning her as a representation of game. Would you be happy if someone lost an individual immunity challenge and immediately called out to Jeff, "Jeff, I know this was a make or break win for me. I lost, so im just going to quit right now." If people see the swap, decide they don't like it, and then just say I quit. That we fun though, I learned a lot about myself. If quitting is legit regular occurance, what are we even watching at that point.

Survivor is a reflection of society and people don’t always operate optimally or in their self interest. Yes, there are certain expectations people have. I think you can reduce an ally quitting to being no worse than an ally flipping against you. Thus, if the latter is not unfair, neither is the former.

Their similar but I think different in their nuances. I don't disagree with you and maybe Fish could have worded his statements better but I agree with his sentiment.

The same challenge was used in season 39. In IoI, after the tribe swapped, there is an episode where Elaine got her "block-a-vote" advantage at the Immunity Challenge and it was the same "LIFT a CAGE across the course, then SHOOT a BALLS into HOOPS."
The only difference was that in this season, the tribes started in the water, while s39, they had them in land the whole time.
Dean and Jamal were the shooters for the Orange tribe, and Tommy and Aaron were for the new Vuku tribe (with Elaine).
I believe this was the episode Jason went.
To be fair, I’m not surprised he doesn’t remember this. IOTI isn’t exactly remembered for its great challenges.

Survivor contestants using their experience as therapy and "self discovery" is nothing new. Thats fine up to a point. But, totally agree with Stephen about the selfishness and narcissism of players quitting. Love the show but this is not acceptable.

True, though I think that’s why the move on Sifu is odd here. J Maya and Sean were bonding so I think you nip that in the bud before you end up in a 2v2 situation (like happened on Lulu last episode), you’ll be able to save the Sifu boot if you go back to tribal since there’s clearly no love lost between him and J Maya.
I feel like sean helped them by saving sifu. Werent they going to be in such a bad spot for challenges after that?
Dee took the machete from Sifu at one point and said something like "put that back you're going to hurt yourself." In the next clip he preceded to play it like a guitar...again. He seems super annoying, I'm sure he's been pushing more buttons than has been shown.
I think the problem with what Sean did after tribal wasn't what he said it, but how he said it. even watching it read as fake to me. I feel like the whole "great job guys, no hard feelings" needs to be sold correctly for it work and that is not always easy

This younger generation has a lot of quitters and wimps in it this season. people reward this attitude and behavior so they get more people who say they can do hard things and then don’t.

I’m not justifying what they(Sean&Hannah) did, but I’d like to know from a psychologist how crazy this would make the majority of people.
I appreciate Stephen’s passion, but I’m with Rob on this one. The quit didn’t really bother me. I do feel like this situation is comparable to the Chet vote in Micronesia, where Ami and them wanted to make a move, but Chet asked to be voted out instead, and then Ami lost the numbers and was eliminated soon after. So this could have some short term consequences for Dee if they lose again. But given who else is on the tribe I just don’t see her going from that group of four. Unless they really get on her case for voting Sifu, I don’t think she’s lost her numbers.

Yes and no. Would you be okay if this show was legitimately rigged? Of course you wouldn't. There's a set of rules you expect to be followed when agreeing to go on the game. There is a degree of fairness expected.
And Stephen was saying it's just about Dee. He was mentioning her as a representation of game.

If people see the swap, decide they don't like it, and then just say I quit. That we fun though, I learned a lot about myself.

Yes, there are certain expectations people have. However, it’s not like Sean was one dimensional and if he didn’t quit, he would’ve stood by Dee’s side the whole way through. I think you can reduce an ally quitting to being no worse than an ally flipping against you. Thus, if the latter is not unfair, neither is the former.

@@haxicle5378 But I think Fish is looking at it from the perspective of the players and the integrity of the game. I don't think you're wrong and obviously quitting is part of the game but it's still lousy when you look at what Sean did to the other players in the game. I think what he meant by it's "unfair" is just that it was self-centered but not in the same way that a flip is, a quit is almost outside the game whereas a flip is typically done because the flipper thinks it will further their game. Their similar but I think different in their nuances. I don't disagree with you and maybe Fish could have worded his statements better but I agree with his sentiment.
I feel so angry that they use so much time with no substance. I refuse to watch anymore. This is the second season that I find other things to do with my 3 hours. I do enjoy the Australian version a lot. The uk is much better.
