I always wondered what the Mark III was like. I only knew it was a console because of its presence in Phantasy Star Portable for the PSP. I still play that game to this day, and I’ve gotta say, I love how Sega placed a bit of their own history inside the game.
"and an expansion port right here in the front, where you can..." - almost drop your console! Good video! I like that it's very succinct and informative. I didn't know about the later re-release of the Mark III as the Master System in Japan, for some reason.
The Master System is an all time fav of mine! Modern games just can't scratch the itch like retro 8 and 16 bit games....! You make high quality and informative vids.
Dude Kelsey, THANK YOU! Been wanting an in-depth video about the Mark III for awhile now. I'd also like to see the Mark 1, or whatever the original console was called as well. Great work!

Cool video. I was one of the rare kids that got a master system for Christmas while everyone already had a Genesis and a NES so I love seeing videos dedicated to the Mark III/ Master System!
God, you are soooooo beautiful! 😍 Anyway, great video! Since I live in Brazil, I only known the Tectoy Master System. This Mark III is very interesting.
Kelsey Lewin Yeah, Master System was very popular over here back in early 90's. Nintendo got here a little late. At least, officially. Meanwhile, Tectoy did a great job with Sega's console with great marketing, exclusive titles and translations to portuguese. And still today, Master System is produced in Brazil, with games built in memory and no cartridge slot, sadly.
0:03 “If you hurry up anywhere outside of Japan, you probably remember Sega’s Master System mistake” I love these captions. Sometimes I watch a horrible audio quality video and forget to turn them off, then come to a video like this where I don’t technically NEED captions on to understand her, but wow, I’m glad I DID have them on for these gems 👌
Kelsey, your videos are always professional and interesting, thank you! When I saw you pop up on MJR last week it made me wonder where your channel had gone. Nice shortstop grab at the end, the Mariners will be in touch!
My very first system was a SG-1000 MKII (or III?) which I didnt realise was a Sega until much later as it was simply known as 'Aaronix' in Taiwan, named after the distributor for that region. It's pretty much the same as a 'regular' MKII or III, except it came with joysticks with big red buttons - the sort you play flight games with. I have some good childhood memories playing Star Force and Drol. Unfortunately I no longer have the console as it was tossed out by my parents when they bought me a Famicom! I shall trawl through ebay one of these days ... :D Great vid as it brought back some long forgotten memories.
In Greece, the Sega Master System sold *way* more than the NES. To give you a picture, the first time I ever saw a NES was when I went to college in the US.
For Christmas in 1990 I picked the Master System because I love the arcade games it has. Watching the videos on You Tube of the games in their true FM sound saddens me that us in the west got screwed over in the sound department. I would chose the enhanced sound over the light gun any day. Honestly, who ever used the light gun more than a few times. I would have happily paid a little extra for the enhanced sound. 1980s Sega arcade games all had awesome music and games in proper FM on the Master System like Hang On, Outrun, Space Harrier, Fantasy Zone and R Type all sounded amazing. I have quite a decent Master System collection that I play on my Mega Drive with the Master System Adapter. If I ever get a Japanese Master System I'll need a bridging adapter to make the cartridges fit. Sega never used lock out chips back in the day, I have a few US Master System games I run on a PAL console.
Love the master system and mark iii. When I think of Mark iii though I think about also the sg1000 since it's backwards compatible. Love programming basic for mark iii
Years ago I imported a Japanese SEGA Master System, which still works great. While the Japanese is region locked, the Western version isn't. This is because the Japanese model, apart from using different size carts, uses a different version BIOS. I also still have my original Model I SMS that I bought at Toys R Us. I had gone in planning to buy an NES, but when I saw that SEGA had a console I bought it instead. It too still works great. I did go back later and buy a Model 1 NES (front-loader). I would eventually buy 2 more because the front-loading NES has a design flaw - the connector pins wear out and have to be replaced. A do have a much rarer Model 2 NES (top-loader). The Model 2 NES has no 10NES lock-out chip, so it plays unlicensed (and most PAL games) fine. It still works. My imported late model Famicom also still works.
Great video! I never knew most of this stuff. I had only ever heard of the Mark 2 and actually thought it was some really obscure U.S. precursor to the master system. I actually had no idea you even made videos yourself. I've seen you on Metal Jesus' videos before, but had no idea you did your own videos too.
I would like to see this channel come back. I liked your Kirby and Game Boy videos, and I am cool with anybody who respects the Master of all 8-bit consoles, the SEGA Mark III.
Very cool video. Didn't know a thing about the Master System and Mark III until now! I caught the second ending to your video and almost had a heart attack lol. Nice save!
The Master System was not something that gripped the imagination over here in Ireland. Most people skipped it for Nintendo and the NES or later, the Mega Drive. So I never knew Sega had even earlier consoles, thanks for educating me. It seems all the cool stuff really did get released in Japan 😁
Had a Master system and Genesis and pushing those power buttons just felt great as a kid for some reason lmaoo. That ending reminded me of the famous TechTV blooper.
Just went on ebay for "Samsung GamBoy" and found Mega Drive pads with Samsung logo. Unbelievable. This is so funny, remembering the system war between Sega & Nintendo. Thanks for the informations in this video. Well done.
As a kid ~15 years ago, I remember going to a flea market at a local church in NJ, just b/c I liked to go to flea markets and such, and got a Sega Master's System with like 20+ games & the light gun for $5. At the time, I didn't even know that Sega had made a system before the Genesis, but it looked cool and it was a great deal. Also got an Atari 2600 in original box + like 20 games for that and multiple accessories for another $5.
Fantastic video. You wrote a great script for it. You managed to get in a ton of info in a really short period of time. If only I could I could be so efficient wth my gaming history vids lol. Keep it up!
I was just in Japan today and for the past 12 days. The one Airbnb I stayed at had videos games. A Famicom, Super Famicom, and PS2. We only stayed at that pone for one night though so we only had time to play a few games but it was a cool gaming experience.
Fantastic run down of the system! I was always curious to why the deal was being named "Mark III". Outakes are the best, I stopped doing them because that'd be my whole video lol.
I really really love the design of the Master System. It's so... SEGA. It just looks like something only they could have made. And only at that time period. The SG-1000, too, I love the look of. I just have a soft spot for SEGA hardware.
New Kelsey video! YAY!

Sega never used lock out chips back in the day, I have a few US Master System games I run on a PAL console.
I like how much information you bring. I'm so looking forward to your next video!
Those card games, I still have a few of them and have seen that Mark 3 in Denden town, Osaka Japan. Great video!
My imported late model Famicom also still works.
lol. That ending. I still remember when my dad brought a Master System home after work, one of the best memories of my life.
Great job Kelsey! More and more improvements in each video! I look forward to your next one!
Nice save!
Cool video Kelsey on an obscure console. Thanks for sharing. Also, love the outtake! The oh-shit look on your face was priceless!
Came to visit from MetalJesusRocks. Subscribed because of the wicked save of the Mark III in the outtakes.
The Master System was not something that gripped the imagination over here in Ireland. Most people skipped it for Nintendo and the NES or later, the Mega Drive. So I never knew Sega had even earlier consoles, thanks for educating me. It seems all the cool stuff really did get released in Japan 😁
I owned an NES while my buddy, Jay, down the street had a SMS. Omfg the arguments we used to get into over which console was better.
Had a Master system and Genesis and pushing those power buttons just felt great as a kid for some reason lmaoo. That ending reminded me of the famous TechTV blooper.
Awesome video Kelsey! Can't wait to have you at MO Game Con!
Keep it up!
Great catch at the end. Love the collection in the background.
The world needs more knowledgeable gamers like you!
Cool stuff. I love seeing these not so well-known consoles.
Awesome video Kelsey! I really enjoy your passion and knowledge. Great to see a new video. Totally worth the wait!
Very interesting vid Kelsey, thanks for taking the time. Looking forward to the next one.
I really really love the design of the Master System. It's so... SEGA. It just looks like something only they could have made. And only at that time period. The SG-1000, too, I love the look of. I just have a soft spot for SEGA hardware.
