When I was a student, and exceedingly miserable, I frequently played an LP made by this soprano, and her glorious voice helped to keep me from going under. Her 'Invocation to the Moon' is unforgettable.
She has the best high notes I have ever heard. She is able to leap the octave, and then fade off the note without losing an iota of quality, reflecting the fading of summer in her voice so beautifully. She modulates with the key so superbly its thrilling just to hear the key change. All with a joy and sparkle from her heart. Truly a master of her art, and so sweet and delightful to hear every time.
The sheer purity of her voice amazes me ! , especially those beautiful high notes no doubt one of the best renditions of a classic song , if not the best !!!!
just when I thought the world is full of evil and ugliness, then this song presents itself and reminds me that there are things that remained true and beautiful...
+oswald wellman sorry to keep you waiting. it's because of my imperfect english. what i actually meant to say was "I can not concur with you more", which is the completely opposite .... Happy new year, any way ^^
Never heard a bad thing about Ms. Streich's voice. So gorgeous. Always a pleasure to listen to her, one is virtually stunned to hear such gorgeous tones coming out of a person. And me being a vocal student many years ago -- she enthralled me. I always wanted to sing like her! :-) but I had a deeper voice, one day -- one day -- I hope we can sing together.
Speaking as a dramatic mezzo/alto who always struggles with *hitting* the moderately high notes, let alone go to the top of the soprano range and make it sound so clear and beautiful and pure, I have undying respect for this woman.
The Last Rose of Summer is a poem by Irish poet Thomas Moore, Moore wrote it in 1805 while at Jenkinstown Park in County Kilkenny, Ireland. It is set to a traditional tune called "Aislean an Oigfear" or "The Young Man's Dream, Rita Streich sings it wonderfully
I heard this on the radio yesterday, after hearing it on three billboards, and it's slaying me. Rita Streich's version is great, her voice is particularly clear.
Beautiful, oh so Beautiful! The Ultimate music!!! It transcends space and time! Who said one has to die in order to experience Heaven? Just close your eyes and let the music transport you to realms far beyond the ordinary everyday life.
She is the most beloved post-war singer! Its as if she was angel who came to earth to heal this wounded world with her music. Beautiful! Im in tears. :')
Von Flotow's opera Martha, yes of course but let us not forget the original composer and indeed singer of this lovely piece - none other than Thomas Moore Irish balladeer and poet!
I agree with Rich Merne that this has to be considered the definitive version of the Thomas Moore classic. Rita Streich was one of the best loved and heavily recorded sopranos of the post-war period. With a Russian mother and German father she did not have her sorrows to seek in Berlin when the war ended but survived to be a favourite at Bayreuth, Vienna and Salzburg. She also made acclaimed appearances at La Scala in Milan and Covent Garden in London. Did you know that it Rita's version of "O mio babbino caro" that Rowan Atkinson lip-synced in the film "Mr. Bean's Holiday"?
@Imarirose1 The best rendition ever sung of this song. Moving & Touching. When I reflect on my mother's death, I not only mourn her loss, but what she represented: A generation that is for the most part gone. Hearing musicians like Striech from the past, it brings a sad note to think that such beauty, deep expression of feeling, and love of the arts, the family, community, and the world has been replaced with mindless, tasteless music, film, and self-centeredness.
I have just listened to this Magnificent Hymn to Life. It is to the credit to Thomas Moore for the words and to Flotow for the inspiring music. I reminds me that it was one of my late wife's favourite. Brian Leonard.
Brian Leonard. The poem is set to a traditional Irish tune called "Aislean an Oigfear", or "The Young Man's Dream", which was first transcribed by Edward Bunting in 1792, based on a performance by harper Denis Hempson (Donnchadh Ó hAmhsaigh) at the Belfast Harp Festival. The poem and the tune together were published in December 1813 in volume 5 of Thomas Moore's A Selection of Irish Melodies. The original piano accompaniment was written by John Andrew Stevenson, several other arrangements followed in the 19th and 20th centuries, including two by Beethoven. Friedrich Von Flotow merely borrowed the poem and melody for his opera ‘Martha’ in 1847.
Magie de la voix ,et souvenir de sa rencontre aprés son récitale, genereuse, simple ,gentille comme le sont les musiciens les plus geniaux, ceux qui savent écouter la Nature, les joies et les peines,et y apporter un baume
I think I must have spent half my life listening to great sopranos and tenors and once again I have listened to perfection, did she ever sing a wrong note?I have known of her for many years but not in any great depth that is until this evening, for the last hour or so I have been totally enraptured. Comparing singers from different eras is always very interesting on you tube, so lets just say she compares with the best of any era,my current favourite is Anna Netrebko for her singing and beauty.
@Imarirose1 It is so proper to dedicate this particular piece sung by R.S. Your mom will love it just as my mom would. She suddenly passed away in 2005. We miss them very much. Don't we? Sept. 2010 Magnum TJ

Subarashi ne! Hontou ni sugoi dayo ne! I seldom comment on vids, but I could not let this pass by unnoticed. I get vids to see on opera's, soprano's etc often from a friend, and I skip through them at mostly the start, then 2 seconds from 1/3, 2/3 and the last 10 seconds. But this is one I just really WANT to listen too! Really B-E-A-UTIFUL
What I like so much about Streich is that she seems to me (who knows little about opera) to be a real artist and musician who cares too much about what she is singing to play vocal tricks for the sake of applause. Listening to her, I seem to get the meaning of what she is singing because I am not distracted by any obvious technique and tricks.
In my own view, the definitive version for all time of this wonderful song. Deanna Durban good and Erna Sack unique, but for sweetness, diction, legato and everything give me Rita, Rita, Rita.
When I was a student, and exceedingly miserable, I frequently played an LP made by this soprano, and her glorious voice helped to keep me from going under. Her 'Invocation to the Moon' is unforgettable.
Brings beautiful memories.I used to sing this song for my mother now long gone,Always brings a tear to my eyes
Let us also not forget the great Irish poet Thomas Moore, who penned the beautiful lyrics to this wonderful old Irish air.
She has the best high notes I have ever heard. Superb singing performance accompanied by a superb comment. You make my day!

so so true

Yes, indeed, and do try Norma Burrowes and Erna Berger, too.
My God, what a magnificent voice! I cannot imagine a more perfect rendition of this beautiful song.
How can even one person dislike this. This is what we call real music.
This is the sweet, pure sound that these Irish songs demand. Lovely.
I am convinced that Rita Streich is an Angel sent to us here on Earth from above.
just when I thought the world is full of evil and ugliness, then this song presents itself and reminds me that there are things that remained true and beautiful...
I can not concur with you any more. Her song washes out my wearieness and disappointment with the cruel world.
There are many,Jennibeth, the Sunrise and Sunset, a young mother's smile to her baby, a Rose and, of course, this beautiful song and rendition.
i'll go check it out later. thanks for the suggestion
bjorling4ever Your comment effectively says what Jennibeth wrote. so why would you not concur?

Always a singer that I loved as a child........ and I have not lost my fondness for her.
What a clear and clean Voice she has!

An extreme beauty of this rendition leaves me weeping, which i don't know why.

Lovely! Thanks for posting. The lyrics I believe are by the Irish poet Thomas Moore.

It's a simple and lovely song, but I have yet to hear it delivered any better - faultless. If anybody thinks they have, let me know.
The only one I can think of to compare this to is Amelita Galli-Curci singing this song.
My mother loved the song and sang it in Dutch. My brother is trying to find the Dutch lyrics of this wonderful poem !
