- Miss Universe 1974, the 23rd Miss Universe pageant, was held on July 21,1974 at the Folk Arts Theater in Manila, Philippines. It was the first time in the pageant's history that the event was held in Asia. Margarita Moran of the Philippines crowned her successor Amparo Muñoz of Spain at the end of the event.

The 1952-1959 editions took place in Long Beach, CA, USA.
The 1960-1971 editions took place in Miami Beach, FL, USA.
1972 was held in Dorado, Puerto Rico.
The first MU edition outside of the United States and their territories took place in Athens, Greece in 1973.
And Manila, Philippines was the first MU edition in Asia in 1974.

@@AgentAO7Helen Lindes was my favorite but I think Diana Nogueira, Teresa Sánchez and Patricia Rodríguez really had a higher chance to win than Helen. She had Claudia Moreno of Venezuela and Lara Dutta of India as her competition and those two women were very hard to beat in the 2000 edition of Miss Universe.

She won MIss World a couple of months later, so she was already a mother during Miss Universe.

Miss Universe is always politically & geographically driven. You must have beauty & brains of course, but politics, sash factor, marketability & the location where the pageant is being held always play with it.
Philippines is the perfect venue for Spain to win it’s first ever MU crown, with the country’s rich cultural & historical influence from Spain. And it just happened Spain sent the most beautiful delegate ever at the right place & time.. The universe aligned for Amparo Muñoz that year.

1974 is probably the darkest year for both Miss Universe and Miss World since both winners from 2 pageants were resigned/dethrowned from the titles. Amparo Munoz, MU 1974 from Spain resigned because she refused to follow the organizational regulations during her reign and Helen Morgan, MW 1974 from UK was dethrowned for being a single mother with an 18-month-old son.
@sboudreaux27 she tended to do her own things without the organizers' permission, and was a total diva and nightmare to worked with. She even wanted to pursue a career in soft porn so she just wanted to resigned all together.
@sboudreaux27 she did porn but later became a famous actress in Spain, it's just soft porn which included nudity and sex scenes so I don't know if it still counted as porn.
Miss Spain did films that were considered daring at the time. Today , it would never even cause a commotion. She was a victim of society's limited and constricting view of the times.

After Ms. World dethroned Helen, she was guest with the Mandaue Jaycees in 1975 with her cute baby boy. I misplaced the foto I took of mom & son.
Imagine seeing this crowning moment. Then you realize that Miss Wales was the Miss World winner of the same year she almost get the Miss Universe title.
Believe it or not, Miss Universe had seven women crossover to Miss World and won their title including Helen Morgan in that clip.
Meanwhile, Miss World had five crossovers win Miss Universe including Michelle McLean and Catriona Gray.
She was dismissed shortly after her heart as Miss World, since they found out she had a daughter. The runner-up assumed

Back in 1974 during the live telecast, my bet then was Ms. Aruba or Ms. Colombia. My friend's bet were both Mss. Spain & Wales (as Ms. World) didn't complete their reigns because both did not met the
Pageant's standard shortly after they were proclaimed. Ms. Finland would've been great, too as Ms.U. Too late now.
Did you know that her first runner up, Miss Wales, represent Miss World 1974 at the same year as Miss United Kingdom and she won the title crown, amazing!😮
And that both ladies, Miss Spain and Wales dethroned too! Thanks to technology, and the uploaders.Those of us who watched this in 1974 never got to see this again until the internet age dawned on humanity. And we only had black and white television back then. The 1974 batch was among the most beautiful. All were deserving to win. Miss Wales seemed hesitant and unsure of how she would react. It wasn't until August 1974 that she revealed she had an infant child when she was competing in the miss United kingdom. The Europeans, always liberal and ahead of their time, didn't care. She won Miss United kingdom and later Miss world in November. Again we saw it in black and white. She resigned four days after because of pressure from the conservatives. For us who witnessed miss universe 1974 in our own country the Philippines, all the top five will forever have a place in our memories.
A place made more special by the movies they made in the country with the exception of Miss Escandon.

@@reprolover11 exact, she had a son of 14 months. and then in november she won Miss World, this had never been hidden from the time she was crowned Miss Wales, but the lurid headlines in the hours immediately following her win at Miss World, particularly interviews given by the wife of the child's father, created extreme pressure on Morgan and the Miss World organization.Although this did not violate any of the competition rules (which stipulated only that entrants must be unmarried), pressure was placed on her by the Miss World Organisation that she should resign to save them from further potential embarrassment. That was a terrible experience for her, i think she should have kept the crown until the end.

She was such a liar and deceiver. Simply greedy. However, her biggest mess was Miss World 1974 where she won but was dethroned. Her stupidity caused a waste of time and Miss South Africa should have been crowned without interruption or issue.

She's a darkhorse just like Sushmita Sen of India in 1994 Miss Universe edition. She was never popular nor a crowd favorite and a darkhorse so to speak, but ended up bringing home the crown. 😊

Obviously the audience had a soft spot for Miss Finland. She had the most beautiful eyes, as can be seen in the national costume number. Small wonder she was chosen as Miss Photogenic.
I wonder why she was not offered the crown. When Amparo quit, Miss Wales already won Miss World and resigned because she is a unmarried mother, which made her ineligible to succeed Amparo.

The Amparo of Spain was so beautiful, in these years no time was wasted, everything was meant to be done quickly, to finish quickly.It's not like now, now they give us more suspense when it comes to crowning, But for me the Miss Universe with the most suspense was 2011, it took about three hours to say the name of a candidate.😅 And the background music had me very nervous.
