Jon your videos are awesome but if I may I have a little tip for you: When you talk about specs and throw numbers in the air try to add with the editing program some text that visualizes what you're saying (Like when you talk about screen resoloution and such) Your videos are great and you're doing an awesome job :)
I was wondering that when you test battery life, do you use the live wall paper on the droid or a plain one? A plain one might be a better comparison to the iphone.
You should include how each phone handles media. Being able to use my iPhone as an iPod is a huge advantage and one that an alternate smart phone would have a difficult time improving upon.
Jon are you on 3G or EDGE, and do you charge during the day? 40% after a day sounds like a lot if you're talking for a few hours and using the phone a lot in general.
I have the Droid 2 right now and got it because I wanted the original droid so badly! The keyboard is amazing, and I think it really makes it a lot better than the iPhone. But, I was thinking about getting the iPhone 4 or the HTC thunderbolt because I have an upgrade coming up. I don't need it right now, so I was wondering if I should get the iPhone 4 because of iTunes, Thunderbolt for htc sense and awesome cameras, iPhone 5, or wait for an htc sense phone with a keyboard?
Is that flash on the droid? if so wouldnt that slow down the launch speed? so wouldnt that make the droid better? also wouldnt that have something to do with the browser...?
I don't know if it will make a difference or not for the speed test but try putting a normal wallpaper not a live one. Also pressing "Kill all apps" on the advanced task killer no longer fully closes everything. Sadly since the Froyo update you have to press and hold on each individual application and click force close to completely close it. I don't know if it will make a difference for the unlock screen but you can try it if you want
@ThornfullessRose It multitasks all right. It may not be able to do everything as the droid does, but it is smoother running when doing multiple apps on the iphone4 compared to the android operating system. It's not a highlight in mentioning it in a face off.
@DinoOderSo They use the iPhone because everyone is familiar with the newest product, so there is a common base ground to compare from. Also, the iPhone was the first to bring a touch screen to the smart phone interface, so it too makes it a good base ground to compare off of.
Ik I got an outdated phone but I'm still rocking the iPhone 3GS and I've been debating wether to get the htc one or iphone 5. I love the simplicity of ios but I want the customization of android which should I get
@Justin13L Look again, he tried to zoom in on a video - the video play button popped up, and he moved where he was trying to zoom in on. You cannot pinch zoom on any smartphone on a video. I've played with both, and was quite disapointed by Droid 2's unresponsive screen.
you know they can change the way the radio is showing the bars and what they actually are. so you were probably getting the same bars on all phones even tho one looked liked it was getting more bars. Unless you did a numerical Network test where it shows you the actual signal and not the bars.
@jon4lakers try loading web pages separately, not both devices at the same time. and load it 3 times, take the average. basic statistics tells you that outliers exist in data.
I know when the speed test happened on espn, the droid won. But you said the iPhone was quicker, would it not be because the droid actually has flash content to load up while the iPhone doesn't?
my droid 2 has problems sometimes the keyboard will take you on a short cut...say i was typing a text message if i hit c while typing it takes me to a calendar while im typing..if i hit b---> browser p--->player ext i find it very frustrating because itll happen at random times while im texting leading me to just have to text on the screen it lags sometime and since the update restarts at least twice a day...i have decided today that i will convert to the iphone 4...just some of my feed back
If you remember pre-flash videos the browser scrolling was quite smooth on Android 2.1+ And if you notice your flash elements on the page were what seemed to be causing your Droid 2 browsing to be a tad choppy. I'm sure if you disabled flash (available in browser settings), the browser would be damn near equal, loading and scrolling.
I'm glad someone who does these videos can actually get the browsing started at almost exactly the same time, as opposed to those who randomly tap, and one starts a little later than the other. Good job jon4lakers! =)
i currently own an iPhone 3GS and at times truly regret joining AT&T for it b/c it seems to be falling behind the curve...FAST. and with the reviews on the iPhone 4 not as great as i was expecting i think i may switch phones...but with what i have seen in this video and knowing that Apple likes to step it up when their comsumers are like, "hey, get your stuff together" i am going to wait and see if they make any improvements to the 4 before my contract is up..which i hope they do
I opted for the Droid 2 and I'm LOVING IT! I also have a iPod Touch 3rd Gen and that is great for a couple of apps I liked the app store that Google's Market doesn't have yet. I'm a MAJOR Apple fan (I only use Mac computers), but I have to say with Flash capability and a qwerty slide out keyboard there really wasn't much competition between them for me. This was an informative video though and it helped me confirm why I'm glad I chose the Droid 2!
@jon4lakers well of course ur gunna drop calls on the iphone u dont even have a case on it if the droid has a moving background for daily usage wouldnt someone have a case on a iphone for daily usage so they wouldnt drop calls?
Love your reviews! Helped me pick my phone so I watch every one you do haha. It's good to see that you actually declare the winner of the two devices and really just generally avoid being bias because you're an iPhone user. I've got a 3Gs so yeah I'm an apple fan boy, all the apps and just the functionality are great and feeling of the phone is amazing, but good to see other phones are on the same line and starting to impose a bit of a threat to the apple range.
I have the droid 2 right now and an upgrade available. Thinking of switching to an iPhone (mainly to keep everything under the same umbrella). However, my droid turns itself off a lot and freezes. I have to charge it daily and the visuals suck. Hmmity
also you have like everything unneeded opened in the droid 2 like the live walpapers and advanced task killer, and you have the iphone in airplane mode
I really dont know which to buy. I bought one iphone 4 for my dad but I dont know which to buy for me. Milestone lags bore me a lot! I dont know noone that has one milestone 2 so i can fully test it before choosing. Why D2 shows only 144MB of ram if it has 512 chip?
@jon4lakers jon, you don't need advanced task killer for any 2.2 device. after you kill your apps they will still continue to turn on and run in the background. your killing your battery with that app. on Phandroid there is a forum for that.
@DukoBenedicto No, you may get some Lag in the lock screen or when you start up, but other than that it will be the same. You may experience lower battery life though. But that is usually only when you are using Applications from Cydia.
@MrTechdude1 Companies send him units to do reviews on. In most cases after he's done reviewing a unit he sends it back, however he does keep a few like the iPhone 4, Droid X, and Nexus One. What deal he has with them I'm not really sure.
@JRichards8086 It didn't, the Droids interface is also less responsive especially moving through screens. I compared an iPhone to my friends new Droid.
@BIGBALLER102290 all phones face the antena problem. it's just apple put those black strips on the side of the phone so people covered it as they could see it.
If we more than halved the size of the screen on the motorola we would also need to increase the pixel resolution. So when your getting a unusually high res screen you wonder what for.
@DinoOderSo Yea I was shooting in the dark on that first one ;) But regardless of its functions or capabilities, it is still extremely popular and well known. None of the other phones on market really set themselves apart, so he would need to compare it to the Palm vs the Fascinate vs every other phone in the category. The iPhone is just a good base comparison model.
@shark101au Yes i have used the i fail 4 before and honestly what is so great about it ? Does it have swipe ?, does it have flash ?, is it a open software ? Well it does not. The iphone 4 is of so low quality i droped my Iphone 4 from about 1.5m and its back smashed well thats what happens when the back of your phone is made of glass and Apple's Os is nothing compared to the Droid software which is run by linux.
@Athos523 ya you are correct there is an app called frash with which you can have flash content on your idevice but still you need to jail break your idevice to use this frash app
@Bang0r that's pretty hard with one touch rooting. also this he said he wanted to compare these phones as most people u the everyday to get a more accurate result. is that so? most android users, or advanced android users, know that rooting their phone will not only improve battery, and performance but i also happens to include this tidbit: free wireless hotspot!
@nparadisecity actually the snapdragon is old tech, the Cortex A8 processor is what is used in all current smart phones. The A15 will be used next year in the future smart phones. Snapdragon sounds cool, but it is obsolete,
@onelegchair Sorry to let you down, buddy. But the 1 click Jailbreak + Winterboard is way simpler than customizing an Android phone. I'd like to see a physicial keyboard on the iPhone, though.
@marquesbrownlee Live wallpapers are part of standard phone usage. I wanted the tests to be as real world as possible.
Jon your videos are awesome but if I may I have a little tip for you:
When you talk about specs and throw numbers in the air try to add with the editing program some text that visualizes what you're saying (Like when you talk about screen resoloution and such)

I was wondering that when you test battery life, do you use the live wall paper on the droid or a plain one? A plain one might be a better comparison to the iphone.
for the signal round, please note that as steve jobs has mentioned, some companies do not display the accurate signal strength
Dear Jon,
I'm pretty sure that I would take smooth scrolling over flash. Besides, the all the websites are moving to flash
using the live wallpaper, will that slow the droid down a bit compared to the iphone?
@KRASFA it doesnt matter if flash was on or not because he wasnt loading any flash content
You should include how each phone handles media. Being able to use my iPhone as an iPod is a huge advantage and one that an alternate smart phone would have a difficult time improving upon.
And I can't update my droid 2. But one an update comes out for ips. You just plug your phone into your computer and press update.
That wallpaper droid 2 sold me that phone. It would be my intro in late 30s into social media and PC for first time. I became a serious nerd.
Jon are you on 3G or EDGE, and do you charge during the day? 40% after a day sounds like a lot if you're talking for a few hours and using the phone a lot in general.
You also forgot about the swipe input feature for the virtual keyboard on the Droid 2.
I have the Droid 2 right now and got it because I wanted the original droid so badly! The keyboard is amazing, and I think it really makes it a lot better than the iPhone. But, I was thinking about getting the iPhone 4 or the HTC thunderbolt because I have an upgrade coming up. Is that flash on the droid? if so wouldnt that slow down the launch speed? so wouldnt that make the droid better? also wouldnt that have something to do with the browser...?
@TheVtieg6 it's simply called "Water", it comes with the phone as a default live wallpaper.
I don't know if it will make a difference for the unlock screen but you can try it if you want
jon the apple a4 chip on the iphone 4 i underclocked to 800mhz, apple underclocks their iphones every year for longer battery life and less heat
@Freshkimo Not illegal where I live but yeah he's in Cali right? Isn't it illegal in the whole state or something?
Ik I got an outdated phone but I'm still rocking the iPhone 3GS and I've been debating wether to get the htc one or iphone 5. I love the simplicity of ios but I want the customization of android which should I get
Its not a carrier war no more. Its more of a manufacturer war.
@Justin13L
Look again, he tried to zoom in on a video - the video play button popped up, and he moved where he was trying to zoom in on. You cannot pinch zoom on any smartphone on a video.
I've played with both, and was quite disapointed by Droid 2's unresponsive screen.

@jon4lakers try loading web pages separately, not both devices at the same time. and load it 3 times, take the average. basic statistics tells you that outliers exist in data.
Less smooth scrolling & zooming is to be expected on phones which support flash. Flash is much much more taxing on hardware compared to HTML5.
Excellent work on the video, very well done...
Is that flash on the droid? if so wouldnt that slow down the launch speed?
I know when the speed test happened on espn, the droid won. But you said the iPhone was quicker, would it not be because the droid actually has flash content to load up while the iPhone doesn't?
@BigMaxIncorparated true but look, the iphone has airplane mode on. that explains why its battery isnt draining as fast.
my droid 2 has problems sometimes the keyboard will take you on a short cut...say i was typing a text message if i hit c while typing it takes me to a calendar while im typing..if i hit b---> browser p--->player ext i find it very frustrating because itll happen at random times while im texting leading me to just have to text on the screen it lags sometime and since the update restarts at least twice a day...i have decided today that i will convert to the iphone 4...just some of my feed back
@hunterlholder live wallpapers actually does use up a good chunk of processing power so it does affect the smoothness on the homescreen
@thinkboutit it's only choppy because there are scaled flash applets on the page.
I'm glad someone who does these videos can actually get the browsing started at almost exactly the same time, as opposed to those who randomly tap, and one starts a little later than the other. Good job jon4lakers! =)
@3diot Also its not on Airplane mode like the iPhone 4.
Where can i get this cool wallpaper with the leaves on water? (droid 2 for sure)
@NYprinc3 3G doesn't show the true phone speed that well because different networks will have different speeds and areas with stronger signal.
i currently own an iPhone 3GS and at times truly regret joining AT&T for it b/c it seems to be falling behind the curve...FAST. and with the reviews on the iPhone 4 not as great as i was expecting i think i may switch phones...but with what i have seen in this video and knowing that Apple likes to step it up when their comsumers are like, "hey, get your stuff together" i am going to wait and see if they make any improvements to the 4 before my contract is up..which i hope they do

Outstanding review. It's really going to help me decide. Thanks a lot!
@jon4lakers
well of course ur gunna drop calls on the iphone u dont even have a case on it if the droid has a moving background for daily usage wouldnt someone have a case on a iphone for daily usage so they wouldnt drop calls?
Love your reviews! Helped me pick my phone so I watch every one you do haha. Which of this is the best: Blackberry torch, new bold, nokia e7, iphone 4, xperia arc, xperia play, motorola droid 2, nokia n8?????????????
1 question: does the iphone 4 still have that antenna problem?
I have the droid 2 right now and an upgrade available. Thinking of switching to an iPhone (mainly to keep everything under the same umbrella). However, my droid turns itself off a lot and freezes. I have to charge it daily and the visuals suck. Hmmity
also you have like everything unneeded opened in the droid 2 like the live walpapers and advanced task killer, and you have the iphone in airplane mode
1/8th of a second difference will def be the lynch pin for me! Thanks for this useful review of new Internet cell phones!
I like how you tried to multitouch pinch to zoom on the iPhone and it failed the first time, but you decided to say it was "smoother"
Live wallpapers use a bit of battery...
You should set flash to "on demand" instead of "always on", it will increase browser speed and get rid of lag in scrolling and zooming.
how about desire hd vs iphone 4 or desire hd vs evo 4g
?
I LOVE THE DROID 2 but is it avalible in canada?
I really dont know which to buy. I bought one iphone 4 for my dad but I dont know which to buy for me. Milestone lags bore me a lot! I dont know noone that has one milestone 2 so i can fully test it before choosing. Why D2 shows only 144MB of ram if it has 512 chip?

hey John i have been looking for that wallpaper that you're using on the iphone 4 for a long time, any link for it?
Nice video, browsing is a tad choppier on the Droid2 because of the flash content in the browser.
and from this 2 wich is better????? I got HTC evo
@marcusgilson
it has 50%. battery affects performance around 25%
@sorakey899 and actually nandroid is a backup tool for custom roms for rooted android phones. so it is available on multiple carriers
Where can you get that wallpaper the Droid has?! I've wanted that so bad on my GS3, but can't find it anywhere :(. Is there anyway to get it?
Harrison Craig it came with droid 2
I don't see how you are opening things at the same time if you are like: Open and open. Should be ready to touch both opens at the same time.
Is there an adblocker on the iPhone browser?
@carrapatoo do you work for apple or something
Why don't you try a Video on the iPhone 4, and the Droid 2 Global? See whats better then.
Can we get a new test with the iphone 4 on Verizon and the droid 2 global on verizon
@DukoBenedicto No, you may get some Lag in the lock screen or when you start up, but other than that it will be the same. You may experience lower battery life though. But that is usually only when you are using Applications from Cydia.
@jblades93 does it have a decent amount of battery life? Or does it suck?
@UnknownVideoPoster actually it has a 1ghz processor but on the droid 2 global it has a 1.2 ghz processor
you really cant know how amazing the retina display is until you see it in person, you literally cant see the pixels!!
Can we put a:
Jailbroken iPhone 4 vs. A Rooted Droid 2
You fail to point out that instead of paying verizon for visual voice mail, you could just use google voice for voice mail instead, for free
@MrTechdude1 Companies send him units to do reviews on. In most cases after he's done reviewing a unit he sends it back, however he does keep a few like the iPhone 4, Droid X, and Nexus One. What deal he has with them I'm not really sure.
fact is.. any phone you have will lag over time.. Depending on how much memoiry you have.. how long youve had it or how much is on it.
@JRichards8086 It didn't, the Droids interface is also less responsive especially moving through screens. I compared an iPhone to my friends new Droid.
he didnt mention droid 2's swype keyboard input method. makes it alot easyer to text quickly with
@silenteyesspy well I am just saying that because the test isn't fair...btw you are able to deactivatex the flash to make it faster
@krazyxdr: if I deactivate flash then what's the point of that? That's why I'm sticking with my iPhone

@mahimjawad why isnt the droid in airplane mode then?
@reks9366 The Droid 2 also has an accelerometer. You can't jailbreak an Android, but you can root it.
@reks9366 you dont need to jailbreak a droid... you can just download the apps online.
always wonder why jon is so secretive about the notes app on the iphone
You forgot a really important category, the apps.
@Athos523 ya you are correct there is an app called frash with which you can have flash content on your idevice but still you need to jail break your idevice to use this frash app
is the motorola droid 2 the same as the milestone??
yeah... the live wallpaper kills battery. so battery and processing speed are taken down a LOT
You are very well-versed. I appreciate your presentation!
@jon4lakers If i want a phone no matter what the price and i want the BEST Screen what should i get?
@Bang0r that's pretty hard with one touch rooting. also this he said he wanted to compare these phones as most people u the everyday to get a more accurate result. is that so? most android users, or advanced android users, know that rooting their phone will not only improve battery, and performance but i also happens to include this tidbit: free wireless hotspot!

@Korntoff I thought the exact same thing, I'm gonna get the global and I want to see it compared to the iphone 4
@onelegchair Sorry to let you down, buddy. But the 1 click Jailbreak + Winterboard is way simpler than customizing an Android phone. I'd like to see a physicial keyboard on the iPhone, though.
one note: when you take flash off the browser it preforms much smoother.
1. remove your value test, I can get any plan I want
2. why is the iphone in airplane mode?
3. what about multi-tasking?
@austbart whats so good abt the installous anyways?
My droid has a good browser better than tnis one. One question how do you take screenshot on a droid 2
