You're right, that dude was bad. In the Southern Gospel music genre and community, he is considered unanimously to have been the baddest of the bad and arguably the greatest Southern Gospel male vocalist of all time. Throughout his career, he was offered multiple contracts to record secular country music by the biggest major labels in Nashville but he turned them all down because of his undying commitment to Jesus Christ and to music ministry. His brother, Ronny Hinson, the man on far right of the quartet, is one of the greatest and most celebrated Southern Gospel song-writers of all time.

I got to share the stage with the Hinson’s many times back in the day, and they could get an audience going like no other gospel group. There will never be another Kenny. One of a kind voice. ❤

I was sixteen when I heard the song, I wore out twenty copies of the cassette. I went on to become a gospel music DJ on radio and became close friends with the Hinsons. Jesus Christ changed my life and it all started with Call me gone.
    God bless you.

Kenny was called "THE VOICE" by many many of his peers. The wrote so many great songs. I have seen "The Lighthouse" and "That I Could Still Go Free" mentioned, I also love "Soul Fillin Station"

I remember the Hinson family. In the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s, my ex-husband was well established in the Southern gospel music family in our area and the Hinsons are one of the well known Southern gospel groups. From this era.
Kenny Hinson (lead singer) and his siblings, Ronny, Yvonne, and Larry made up the group. Sadly, Kenny passed away in 1995 at the age of 41 from cancer.. He always had a reputation for singing and writing songs from the heart.
What a gifted man. I love to hear him sing. So glad we have the videos and music of those who are no longer with us.

I miss Kenny Hinson so much. Always thought he sounded like Merle Haggard when he was younger but as he got a little older, his voice blew away Merle Haggard away, for that matter he blew everyone away. His Son, Weston Hinson sings like him, including both his nephews, Bo Hinson and Eric Hinson, and Mike Bowling who's not relative.

My mom was really close with The Hinsons back in the day. They are great people and had lots of fun. One funny thing she told me and you can hear it in the last verse of this song, he gets a little loose with that last “Gone”…. “You can call me John” 😂

@ Modern Renaissance Man Kenny Hinson is highly regarded as a singer. What a voice. His story... He was offered a recording contract to sing country but instead chose gospel. He had already been singing gospel for a long time. The band had gotten back together after being disbanded for a while to do their Hallelujah Tour. One of the soundmen used a home camera to record them, ran music through soundboard. The footage is the last concert footage there is, fuzzy but we have it. They were going to do a professional taping, but sadly, Kenny got sick, and it turned out kidney cancer and he passed away in 1995 at age 42. The last footage he could barely stand The Lighthouse on the Gaithers. Not his best but he gave it all he had. There are other videos easily found of The Lighthouse when he was healthy. Kenny called Gone to be with the Lord.

Kenny Hinson was great and could have hit it big in country. my fav of his is "I Could Still Go Free" even though most people love "The Lighthouse" more. I met them once when they came to town to do a show and they appeared on Sid Hughes tv show. I was working after school there at channel 61 where they had a tv and radio station. Sid was a big time gospel dj and a promoter of gospel acts. They were nice people and could sing their tails off.

Ty, I'm only 9 months late but I have to agree. Kenny Hinson (1954-1995) could have taken his talent and gifted voice to country, but he remained true to the calling he answered in 1967. Dr. Larry Hinson (1956-2020) was also gifted in voice and literally driven by the call to preach the Good News. Sadly, he died this past spring.

I have been following The Henson's since around 1972. They are great, I sing a lot of their song still to today. At one time I was in Niagra Falls Canada around 1977 with a church group and was visiting the tower with the rotating dinning room on the to. In the bottom was a bar/dinning room. The others in my group hounded me till I went in and sang. I sang Hinsons song "That I could still go free". I was the only that got a reaction from the crowed. Every one loved their song.

This gospel group was the standard set for all other country gospel bands. Kenny was fantastic, Ronnie (on the far right) is a great songwriter and MC of the group, Yvonne is their sister, the fellow in the middle is Ronnie's son Bo, who started singing with this family group when he was 17. Three members of this group have passed- Kenny, the piano player Rodney, and the drummer Tracy Richardson. And, sadly the original baritone singer, Larry Hinson passed away a few days ago.

I was fortunate enough to be a part of the gospel music industry as a teen. I have met all of the Hinson family at Concerts over the years, actually ate Frisch’s with Ronnie after service. And I sang some with The Hoskins Family out of Ohio. The Original Hinsons are the best of southern gospel, and we miss Kenny dearly.

I knew it was a gospel song. I love the Hinson. You got to play The Light House. Ronnie Hinson wrote it and Kenny the guy singing lead could sing anything. I listen to The Light House almost every night before going to sleep. Heck I have the Hinson's playing all night. This song Call me gone was 1988. Please do The Light House from this same concert in 1988. Kenny is in heaven he lost his battle to cancer in the 90's. The Hinson's were just kids when they started singing. So excited to hear a gospel song. I was hoping it was the light house but I love this song too. Kenny has a son named Weston and he can sing almost like his daddy. Kenny could preach too. All of the Hinson's are great. Ronnie on the right end wrote the Light House. It has been sung by so many people. Elvis loved this song. I sure wish he would have recorded it. The Light House just makes a person feel so good. Thanks for playing this song. Play more gospel music. You can't go wrong with gospel music.

The vocal styling that you heard is called “curling” a note. A lot of country singers, Merle Haggard, Lefty Frizzell and Johnny Rodriguez were some with that same style. Kenny never left his calling of music ministry to pursue a secular career. He was committed to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and served Him until the end.

Loved the Hinsons. Loved Kenny & knew him. He was a TRUE man of God. Broke my heart when the Good Lord called him home at the young age of 42 in 94. I still Miss him Dearlyyy.

Saw the hinsons a lot of times. They say he patterned his style after country singer Merle haggard. Merle was from California and so was the hinsons

It is a classic quintessential southern gospel song. Your reaction video was priceless! The group was popular in the late 70’s early 80’s.

Hey man...Love this! ❤️ I know of very few people who are not influenced by him in multiple genres of Gospel music & Country as well. There's a few that have come close to his sound & friends of mine. Sang with them numerous times but none can compare to original! The spirit when I met him and he took time to talk to a kid wanting to sing & he cared.... something missing alot today btw.... & the Charisma... but that voice.. the trills.... the growl.... I've been singing a couple weeks now lol...actually celebrating 40 years in Gospel Music Ministry & ain't heard a better one yet.

Kenny was one in a million... unequaled in God given talent. He could have been a country super star.... but he was uncompromisingly devoted to Christ.

The Hanson’s had some of the iconic gospel songs of the 70’s and 80’s. Check out the Lighthouse

You need to hear him sing The Lighthouse. He was a great Southern Gosple singer and writer. Sadly he's gone to his reward now and greatly missed. I grew up on The Hinsons!

This was the first time I have heard this song or group. No I didn't think it was gospel even though the sign behind them said it was. I would be interested in checking out more of their music however.

You definitely should. They started out as young kids. They go way back. This was 1988. They sang everywhere. My favorite song is The Light House. Wrote by Ronnie Hinson. That's Kenny singing lead. He could preach too. Sadly Kenny lost his battle to cancer in the 90's. Well we know where's he's at. Thank God for the Hinson's.

One of the greatest Southern Gospel groups of all time. You should find something by the Cathedrals and the Happy Goodman family

From the beginning verses I can relate "Call me a dreamer cause I call it mine heaven." He's homesick for it though he's never been there and sees himself as a stranger in this fallen world.
*A sinful world that continues to acknowledge there is a God yet they deny him by not being in a serious relationship with Him. 🙏💕🙌
As for me it still stands for now in 2022
We're not supposed to be friends with this world 💙 Love you all 💖

Man that dude right There is my greatest country Gospel inspiration. Pure Holy Ghost Blue eyed soul! That low thang is to country what that Baritone growl is to soul..Barry White, Teddy P. Having said that what made him special is that He lived what he sang for God and treat all people as decent human beings. He passed at 42. Began professionally with his family at 14...Great God!
