Yeah I think he started out as a roadie and was playing around with the piano one day while the guys are out to lunch or something and they came and heard him playing and I think it turns out he went to juilliard

    • @paulprovenzano3755

One time when he was on camera, he spoke about how he had joined the band. He had known the players and they were all friends of each others long before they ‘made it.’ It only came out to their knowledge that he was a piano player in a rather incidental kind of way. And he was like, “you guys want a piano player? No, really??“
they were all like “fk yeah”
I am not sure if it was on Free Bird the documentary or one of the older ones. I always remembered it because they were all friends and he just got grandfathered into the band. As long as they had known him, they didn’t know he could play like he could. Now, it’s impossible to imagine their songs without those smokin ivories.

Billy Powell was aRoadie with the band. While they were working in Muscle Shoals recording the Band was taking a break and when they returned Billy was playing piano. He was. classically trained and accomplished pianist. The rest as they say was history… what a phenomenal combination of talent in that band and was my favorite band in the mid 70’s Still love to hear them play.

I just liked how they worded it ... thought it was clever, but that wasn't my point. My point was that, like the suggested song, Saturday Night Special, it it had an unusual subject that you might not suspect.

      You are exactly right.
The show really begins at 6:10 with the best guitar licks you will ever hear.

I was raised in Alabama and listened to a lot of Southern Rock.
I love most of the bands but Lynyrd Skynyrd is by far my favorite.
I think I have listened to Free Bird three times this week.

An awesome cover of J. J. Cole's song. Lynyrd Skynyrd dove deep into blues roots at times, and they were like my gateway drug into loving the blues. This one is so much fun! It weds rock to the blues, and I can dance to it. :) Plus horns!

This song is a J.J. Cale song, he's singer-songwriter that Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eric Clapton & many others have covered his songs, besides having his own successful career. Please check out his version of this song or "After Midnight" which Clapton made a hit, but everyone from B.B. King to Willie Nelson have recorded the song.
