This chord sounds amazing in this progression he used. It's not the chord itself, it's actually the progression, which is the context the chord is used.

The harmony in the beginning is subjective, you could analyze it as a Dmaj, going to a Gm6, OR a Dmaj voice leading to a Dmaj7(#5/9) creating a Lydyian augmented harmony. Its all about context and the beauty of Melodic minor harmony and the chords being all interchangeable. Or it could be derived from a harmonic major (1,2,3 4,5,b6,7) on the D which would make for the 4 minor chord. Again, subjective and about context.

In Europe(netherlands and germany at least) we call this a "mol-dur" chord or progression. Basicly u just play the minor 4 chord (minor 6th interval from tonic) in a major scale. It is a a very powerful tool and has been used over the last centuries by many and i mean many composers/songwriters. U keep the tonic in the bass and add an E(6th), so D/Bflat/D/E which makes it sound so haunting because there is now also a tritone(Bflat to E) and a major second(D to E) in the mix. Very famous examples are:
    Queen: You're my best friend
    Beatles: Till there was you
    Basicly every jazz standard
Love theme from Gershwin's: An american in paris
And many many more. It is literaly everywhere. Keep a look out for this awesome chord construction it will change your entire life.
Ps: if u can find the 3 different mol-dur's in stella by starlight, u know u understand what the mol-dur is!

Important thing is that u can look at this chord as a minor 4th chord with the tonic in the bass (mol-dur progression) if you want to put it in any harmonic context.

    • @roberthart4224
      @roberthart4224 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This isn't a picardy chord at all.
A picardy chord (actually called "picardy third") is a chord that is used at the end of a piece of music. The said piece is in a minor key and ends on the root (but in a major key, not minor) It's typically heard in medievil music and baroque era music.
Totally different to what you are saying about the 4th chord. I understand the logic, but it's not the same context.
Deam Theater's song's (such as "misunderstood") uses a chord progression: Major Root and a minor 4th. Which is what you are trying to explain.
This is simply just a chord progression with a phyrgian or Mixolydian b6 feel.
From what I hear on Misunderstood, I think it is Mixlydian b6, due to the notes in the melody and chords thereafter...

It’s the transition from major chords to minor chords back to major chords that your brain recognizes as a pattern of dissonance back into harmony which gives your brain a feeling of satisfaction. That cognitive dissonance creates and triggers emotions that we wouldn’t otherwise feel which makes minor chords and music itself so beautiful and intriguing as an art!

Kinda. It's usually based on the key. Minor chords generally sound sad, but it all depends on the other chords and notes played, and in what order, if it's done correctly, etc. A lot goes into giving sounds a certain emotional quality. @@jayminlashkarimusic822 both are different bhai, you simply cannot compare or judge. Indian music doesn't have the concept of harmony at all it is limited to one scale. Sa never changes aka scale never changes. while in western music the rules and modes(ragas) of scales are not as prominent and vivid as Indian music and they don't replicate gayaki ang as much as indian music , neither they have the use of sympathetic strings . You simply cannot compare there have been excellent musicians in western music and Indian music who have escalated the standard of music in general. It is utterly Foolish to compare two different styles of music. A good musician will learn from both and a legend will use both to create even better music like Ustad Zakir Hussain and john mclaughlin.

Aesroix Code that is just Dsus2(b6) which means dha is komal. it sounds great but not at all like a raga it takes a lot more than throwing a flat sixth to sound like any raag. A raag is identified by it's pakad which is a certain arrangement of selected notes within a raag. Two raags might have same notes but because of the way they move and their pakad they feel totally different. Here this man is playing chords and in Indian music there is absolutely no concept of chord there is a tanpura to support melody and melody projects a raaga. This chord is very beautiful but no this arrangement doesn't sound like a raga.

Just by reading the title I knew it was gonna be the iv chord. It really is a beautiful chord. Especially with that slightly dissonant m6. Very pretty.

Try to learn it by ear. It’s hard and slow at first but learning that skill pays off. There’s some challenging techniques in this but it’s a pretty slow tempo so I’d say just try to work it out

Beautiful stuff. I’ve always thought of this chords as 2nd inversion Gm6, modal interchange borrowing from D minor (parallel minor) like so many great pop tunes. Oh and also…it’s the tenacious D “wonder boy” chord 🤩. For extra spice, go G minor major 7 😉

It's actually an E half-diminished. With a G on the bottom it's in 1st inversion, or with a B-flat on the bottom it's in 2nd inversion. If the half-diminished is the ii chord, the D on the bottom acts like a tonic pedal, which is how you'll often hear this chord in classical music; that is, as a ii half-diminished plagal cadence, for instance, in late romantic works by Wagner, Richard Strauss, Rachmaninoff, et al.

i personally hear it as a gm6 chord, just sometimes voiced without a g. i think that makes more sense within the context of this style of music.

Me and my friend used to argue about this all the time haha. He'd say that Minor 6 chords don't exist because they're just a diminished inversion. In some styles of jazz though (especially gypsy jazz, but really it happens in all sorts of genres) minor key songs will call for the minor tonic chord to be played with a raised 6 like this for it's specific color, in which case you're out of your mind to try to say it should be called a diminished chord haha. I say if it functions as a minor chord you should call it a minor chord.

The note B flat in relation to the D major chord is minor 6th. The minor 6th interval is only found in aeolian or phrygian scales, implying a modulation towards minor tonality. That's just my interpretation, thanks for the video!

It's Gm6, it's mentioned it in the video. When he plays it in the intro, he doesn't play the root (G) and plays it over D. The B flat comes from the G minor (the minor fourth in the key of D)
