- LET'S WRITE A BOOK! -- EPISODE 1: THE PROCESS ♡
After 5 years of not having a consistent writing practice, I am determined to finish my project by the end of this year. In this video I show you how I turn my idea that has been sitting on the back burner for years and take it from a basic idea to a plot with a beginning, middle, and end. So let's write a book together and learn how to come u with a book idea and then turn that idea into a plot.

Thank you all for watching me take my idea for _house of stone_ and turn it into an *_actual plot_* !! Let me know what your process is for turning an idea into something workable. 🤗
“All vibes no plot” I have never related to anything more than this statement 🤭
I do this way too often 😅😅😅
Same
thats literally my first draft rn i swear im working on it
We’re all writing we promise 😅😭
I've lost count of how many tutorials I watched because I was stuck with an idea. It was always an idea and when I started writing I didn't know where to start, or what the PLOT was. And trust me, none of it helped me. It gave me tips but not those that worked for me. But your video, for me, was a total eye-opener. I have a very short attention span and the way you don't just stare at the camera and talk like many others do, but instead SHOW us the process was such a big deal for me. I love you so much for making this video. You gained a loyal subscriber. May you reach the peak of success and happiness.
Aw wow this comment is so thoughtful thank you for watching!! SO glad this was helpful for you and good luck to you in all your writing!! 💗
@@mikwrites I just brainstormed the idea that I've been pushing off for like two years and all credit goes to you, girl. you're a lifesaver
This is the most helpful video I’ve come across. Don’t get me wrong. I love watching published authors, indie and traditional, talk about their process. But they never start at the VERY beginning. They go from plot outline to publication process. What a lot of us need is how to get started at the ground level, like going from idea to premise to outline to plot. I don’t even want to think about publishing until I have a completed draft. And this video was excellent for getting me on the path to a completed draft. I’ve been writing since I was five, and yet I’ve never finished anything novel length. I’ve started dozens, and I’ve completed long short stories and poetry, but never a novel. Thank you for starting at the beginning!!! 😊😊
Thank you for watching!!! Always got to start at the beginning - it took me a while to find a process that worked for me getting me from idea to plot - I’m glad I get to share it now!
i love how you used pinterest to find the vibes and atmosphere of your book! I have aphantasia so its a bit difficult for me to visualize the atmosphere of my story but your method is PERFECT
Yes!! Pinterest is such a great tool to be able to hone in on how you want your novel to look and feel!! So glad you found it useful - thanks for watching 🥹
I really appreciate a video of turning a vague idea into a plot. Most authortube channels don't really break this process down in a simple and manageable way. For that, thank you very much.
So glad it was helpful and that you enjoyed it !!
I think what helps me most is input by friends and other people. Every time I share a story idea someone asks questions that I have not asked myself but that I feel like I need to answer in that very moment which creates a much more intriguing story.
My current story idea that I am currently drafting has changed drastically since I first came up with it like 2/3 years ago all thanks to input from other people and I love it
17:50 yes please a video on characters 😩🙏
🫡 I am on it!!!
@@mikwrites :D
I just want to say that I magically stumbled upon this video and wow! Your approach is so interesting and I'm sitting here fully invested in trying this for my own writing project. Thanks for the wonderful ideation ideas!
I’m so glad you magically stumbled here 🫶☺️ let me know if you try this process and how it goes!
The video ended so fast i didn’t realise cuz i was so invested in writing my own plot as well
I have this idea for 8 years and im trying to write it so this was so helpful
I’m excited for this series 💛💛
Aw yay! I am so glad that you found this video helpful for your own writing journey 🤗
I can't wait to see the book
Next step is outlining 😅!!
Your voice and the way you talk is so calming. I love your organisation and the way you plan out your novel its so satisfying and inspiring, please make more videos on how to organise a plot/plot beats or chapters
I definitely would love to go more in depth with my process! I’m hoping to do more book deep dives on my channel also that study other books for this 💗
Okay already SO excited for this book omg 😍
You and me both!! 😍🤗 - thanks for watching!
I've been really stuck lately. I have the plot, characters, and where it's going but not feeling like I could go forward. I tried outlining the other day and that helped but you said several things I want to try to get back into the excitement of my book. Thanks!
I’m so glad this could help!! I feel like I was always getting stuck there and I couldn’t figure out why - this process worked for me, I hope it can work for you too! 💗
omg please post more!!!! Loved this
Thank you for watching! More coming soon 💗
It was fun to have a look at your process and workings of your mind. It's helped me with adding stakes in my wip
Yay! I'm so glad this could help 🥰- it took me so long to realize that any book I wrote just didn't up the stakes, I've been trying to also be really intentional of upping them whenever it calls for it!
My ideas/plots sometimes just come into my head fully formed or...word vomit. I just find a hapless victim and start talking at them. Not really to them, but verbalizing the thoughts help me solidify it into something that makes sense.
Super cool! You've absolutely motivated and also inspired me with new ways to plan my writing. I can't wait to see your writing journey!
Yay! I’m so glad it inspired you with your own writing 💗 thanks for watching
The way you've put it down so clearly and made it look so simple... I can tell you've worked on this a lot!!
Thank you!! Definitely love this idea I had to make it workable!
I'm so excited for you, and look forward to hearing more about this story!
Thank you so much 🥹 and thanks for watching!
Loved this and felt inspired to start writing too! Can't wait to see you write everything out!😍
Thanks so much for watching and so happy it made you inspired!! Happy writing 💗
This video found me in the best time. I needed this. Your video is amazing. Thank you so much 🧸🎀🏹🫶🏼 happy writing!!!!
Thank you so much 😭😭 this warms my heart! I’m so glad you are resonating! Happy writing to you too 🫶
Keep in mind all my folks who are just starting to write: (urban) fantasy isn't a real genre. It holds no plotline by itself. It's a commercial genre (something bookstores will use to sort your book in their stores) You'll always need a (content) genre which works through the story (romance, thriller, action etc.) You can create a romance between an elf and a witch or an ogre who solves crime (which would be a mystery/thriller) based in a fantasy world, but 'fantasy' on itself isn't a genre 😊❤ I haven't finished this entire video, so if the author eventually chooses a content genre and explains this, that's good (I predict from the first 10-15 minutes she'll choose action or mystery) but in case it doesn't get explained, here it is 😇 Good luck writing, all!!
I absolutely love this video, and I'm so glad I stumbled across your channel! I'm in a similar position you were, so this is really motivating me to follow a similar process to flesh out my idea - I can't wait to get started!
Such an awesome video!! Please keep these coming! I love see the bts
Thank you for watching!! Definitely more behind the scenes coming soon 🥰
Absolutely floored you don't have more likes/comments/subscribers! When I tell you I thought you were a well known professional writer....
This is probably one of the most helpful videos I've come across ngl Can't wait for episode 2
Wow, thank you! Excited to release more episodes for this journey!
This was so incredibly helpful, I cannot thank you enough
You're very welcome! so glad it could be helpful! 😍
If I can't think of a part of my story myself, I ask ChatGPT for examples on what I could put into that part of my story. And usually I ask for 20 examples and might combine three of them into one, or I'll ask for more examples. Don't be afraid to use AI in the brainstorming phase, or even to pick out your characters voice. I have a paragraph handy of random sentences in third person, that I ask ChatGPT to write in first person with a distinct character voice (that fits the character I'm doing) to get more into the vibes of that character, though this is mostly done for side characters who don't have their own voices shown much, because I tend to have ideas for my main characters.
Exactly the kind of video I needed to see right now ☺️ I laughed so hard when I saw my current project matches perfectly with the list of what you like to read 😂 urban fantasy, mafia, sinister big families, and secret societies 🙌🙌 can’t wait for the next episode 😉
Yessss you get it 🫶🙌🙌 all those elements are needed!! Thanks for watching 💗
i SCREAMED omg i missed your face!!!! cant wait to follow you on this journey!!
I’m baaaaack!! And it feels great - thanks so much for watching this first step on my writing journey!! 💗😭
I have a new shiney idea and it needs a plot like crazy. Sharing your process was sooo interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Of course!! Love when a new shiny idea hits!
ah I’m so glad to have found your channel!! excellent video 🫶🏻
Thank you Chloe 🫶💗 !!!
love you girl
🤭you really good at this, keep it up
Thank you so much!!
This was so cool to watch!
Yay thanks so much for watching my process!! 🌸😇
I've been looking for a series like this. Just to body double with, really. I'm so excited #subbed
Yay! Excited to follow along with you! The next episode will be on outlining
New subscriber here! I love this series so far Mik! Please keep going!
Great Video Mik!
Thank you for watching!! 🫶
little hands are such a mood
p.s - a few minutes in, i like the video! I'm a new writer and its interesting seeing the process in a writers mind! you'll do great!
little hands are suchhhhh a mood !! and thank you so much 🤗
The second I heard the twitter slander I hit that sub button🙏🏾 Also, great video. I’m looking forward to your journey
😂😂 you get it!! sometimes the internet is too much haha - thank you for watching!!
Love this video, my wip is also about a cult! I actually took a little story I wrote 4 years ago and changed it to fit into a trilogy :)
That is so exciting!! Who doesn't love a good cult?
I always saw a Cult like a need for control, the leader controls all others!!??
Yes, definitely! Cult leaders have a need for control and the followers have a need for stability/community/hope etc. which makes followers so vulnerable!!
I love that Helen is Kennedy Walsh lol ❤
Yeah, I'm going to need you to hurry up and write this so I can read it because I AM INVESTED.
😂😂 more videos on project house of stone coming up 🫡
Aaahhhh so happy I found your video, I LOVE your vibe and you inspired me so much!
A question: what’s the thing you’re using for fleshing out your plot with the little boxes/photos etc?!
Thanks so much for watching!!! 🫶and I was using Milanote at the end to visually show the plot ☺️
@@mikwrites ooooooh sounds exciting, I’ll check it out thank youuuu
what did you use for the conflict part? As in the app you used for the cast and stuff .
SUBSCRIBED!!!! You got me at cult ❤
Yesss!! I do just love discussing and researching cults 😅😂
I use Pinterest all the time as art reference in my illustrations but never thought of creating a board to distill my ideas/aesthetic, thanks for the tip. I am super fearful of the blank page so I write down any idea I have on Post-Its, plot, worldbuilding, character development, magic systems, whatever. After a couple months I end up with an embarrassing amount of notes in my messenger bag and empty my shame in the dead of night. Somehow a story emerges and I write it all down in a loose outline (screw you blank page!)
Side note: but I noticed that all of your characters of color were grouped together and secondary characters. This isn’t a huge issue just something to think about, if you continued forward with your “casting” it’s important to give them dynamic personalities, their own motivations/conflicts, and for Zoya, at least, to play a pivotal role in moving story beats along.
Good luck on finishing your novel.
Love that you also use Pinterest and your process of post-it notes is one I can relate to as well! 😂
As for my cast of characters - at the time of this video none of them had been fleshed out outside my main female character, main male character, and Zoya! All others were photos I pinned from the board but hadn’t attached anything to - truly just photos I liked. And of course all characters always are rounded out!
She looks like Caddy from mean girls ❤
Omg the owl house reference LET'S GOOOO
Yessssss - I immediately thought of that clip
What service are you using at the end to storyboard? It looks exactly like what I’ve been looking for to map my stories.
It’s called Milanote !! I’m obsessed !
What is the app you are using for these notes?? looks super helpful!
I used Milanote for the visual breakdown!
What writing software are you using? Loved this video... The book sounds awesome
Thanks so much! 🤗 and in this video I was using Milanote to visually show the process!
The "clay teapot with spider legs" makes me think of an Addams Family style "inanimate" object that grows legs and moves to the person who summons it magically and retracts the legs when it arrives, or as an actual sentient object, probably something within the rich family, as it appears to be porcelain in the picture.
Okay I loveeee that! Yes! I always see that photo when I’m perusing on Pinterest and I just know I have to use it in this story somehow!
I would really love to know what apps or programs you use and which ones you would recommend using during your whole process.
I use mostly: handwriting in notebooks and on post it’s, scrivener and milanote!
@mikwrites Love this video! Full of great tips and I love how you directly walked us through it. What software are you using to plot all this out?
Thanks so much for watching! I was using Milanote in this video to visually show you the plot - but when I am working on a project I mostly use: handwritten notes/post-its, Scrivener, and Milanote 🤗
@mikwrites Thanks for the reply, I'm normally a written note user myself. I'm looking to transition into digital notes so I'll check those programs out. Thanks again!
Does anyone know where the plot chart in the thumbnail is from? I’m always interested in different plot outlines, but it wasn’t featured in the video. Thank you in advance!
It’s the outline from the six act story structure! There is a website you can download the template from - I just made it pretty in Google docs. I actually will be going through this in my outlining video dropping next week!
@@mikwrites Thank you so much, I’ll be sure to watch the video!
@@megfar4008 of course! I also love different outlining and story structure methods so I get it :)
What if the cult leader appears to be blind, because her Medusa powers have been sealed by the family. Only if you want her to be able to interact with cult members. She could still use the eyes around the city as a power she has developed as a result.
I was thinking the cult could worship Medusa & have a stone bust (that is the real Medusa) & the family would be Perseus’ family (Perseid dynasty), who have a stranglehold on magic to keep the cult leader from resurrecting Medusa in some way. Maybe even wanting Medusa to use leader’s or Helen’s body as a vessel. She would be at the heart of the cult then & sheltered from anything that could jeopardise the plan. Also using it as a wedge between her and her friend.
You could have flashbacks to Perseus & Medusa, if you felt like 😂
Sorry, you just got me thinking 😂 ❤
What software were you using to do your plotting in?! I NEED to know
At the end I was using Miranote!! I really love it !
@@mikwrites I've never heard of it but it looks like a great software for plotting! I'm gonna have to check it out. Thank you!!
I use the free version and it’s perfect!
@@mikwrites I love that there’s a free option so many writing softwares you have to pay for.
@@Readingwithkels yes completely agree - when in reality so many writing software features can be done by hand or on Google docs! I like miranote for the visualization aspect ☺️
I must ask, what writing software are you using?
When I visually show the plot - I’m using Milanote!
@@mikwrites Thank you!!!
Enjoyed your process! Just a small hint, pls use some subtle background music ^^ Otherwise great video! Your voice is very soothing to listen to
Thanks for watching!! Definitely will add some background music to the next video ☺️
Nooooo dont ! Some of us like the no music! We are way too overstimulated these days, your voice is just fine @@mikwrites
@@g-9723I agree. It’s so nice to have something simple to listen to that focuses on the content. Overstimulation is such a killer of creativity and mental health.
A good compromise is those that want music play should play their own, that way everyone is happy. Music is to your own taste & at your own volume ❤
Has anyone told you u look like lindsay lohan
Weirdly yes 😭😂 I always get Lindsay Lohan as my celebrity look alike! Haha
i just want to thank you, because of you i got a new story idea (skipping my other two projects) that im genuinly so excited about AND that got me out of writers block. i mean, im so proud of what i just wrote:
*project.apocalypse*
With slow, nonrhythmic steps the infected came closer.
Their mind had been taken over completely, nothing left but insanity and an involuntary hunger for flesh and blood, that they would take from the humans in front of them as if they weren’t the same kind, the same species, the same living, breathing beings. Because they weren’t. The people in front of them were uninfected. They didn’t have that hunger, that insanity. What they did have, was a will to live, a will they were ready to fight for.
i'd love any feedback btw ;)
I love this!!! That line especially! Thanks for watching - and happy that this jogged some new ideas for you.
Would love to know who we're following in this story and their relation to the infected!
@@mikwrites it's following five friends who've been living in the apocalypse for ten years but suddenly come close to the scientific center that probably started the whole virus/apocalypse. some of them want to go find an antidote inside, others don't want to risk their lives.
the main story is actually about the MC, carter, slowly becoming insane and cannibalistic, which are the symptoms of the virus. the thing is, it happens slower with her, because she actually got a modified version of the virus, since the scientists are trying to change it to make it less violent. (which obviously didn't work that well) she kinda becomes abusive towards her friends, including one she loved a lot, which goes to show that she's really turning insane and nonredeemable.
one thing I'm scared of is that if i actually finish and publish this (doubt it tbh, but who knows?) people will still see carter and her ex-LI as a couple, despite the abusive tendencies and all. it happens with a lot of books (CoHo, Lolita,...) and i don't want people to romanticize it... Well, we'll see ig?
also this is very long, apologies😅
Could you link the picture to the right in your thumbnail of this video? It says "the story beat"
That is a personal google sheet I made following the Six Act Story structure that I will be going over in my own personal outlining video! To learn more about the six act story structure (and remember: all outlines are the same!) you can go here: sixactstructure.com/about-six-act-structure/
