    Frontier= Fully boxed titan frame (ability to titan swap suspension/engine) , Dana 44 locking rear (pro4x) , dana front diff, spicer transfer case, powerful vq motor, rear disc brakes, bullet proof and made in USA.
    Tacoma= Channel frame (on going corrosion frame recalls) , rear drum brakes, now made in Mexico, reliability declining and Toyota tax.

    The Nissan Frontier is the most massively underrated small truck on the planet. LOVE our 2018 blacked out midnight edition 4x4. For the money it has zero competition.

    • @desertdudeoverland
      @desertdudeoverland  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well that’s where we have to think about it. What defines a truck as “outdated” besides what the truck manufacturers want us to think. If we don’t have a 10 inch screen then our truck is outdated by the new standards.

    Leasing a 2017 Frontier Pro4X. Picked it up in November 2016, it now has almost 56K miles. The Hankooks did not last long, (maybe 35K?) with easy driving... would not pass inspection for tread wear. I bought some Toyo Open Country A/T II's, and have been very happy with them. The recent 6" snow and ice here in Texas were no match for my Frontier !!

      And by the way, I am half-deaf from Jet engines, Rock and roll, and Gunfire, but the Rockford-Fosgate system in my Frontier still manages to rock my world !!

The Ford bronco is about the most unique truck going with its replaceable body panels.

    Did you lock your differential going up that sand hill? I can't believe people say the stereo sucks my Fosgate system jams!

    • @desertdudeoverland
      @desertdudeoverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No diff lock really has no use outside of one back wheel being stuck in the air spinning. I’ve tried it on many different terrains and it really won’t pull you through because it’s designed to go 12mph and under according to the instructions. I’ve hit about 15pmh in diff lock but it really doesn’t give the power for sand. 4HI in sand and 4Lo for rocks and then diff lock if you get caught with one back tire up in the air.
      Dude the Rockford fosgate is absolutely the best sound system out there right now. It’s crisp and will blow your ear drums out 😵. Absolutely demolishes the function of the tacoma!!!! I was not impressed at all with the Tacoma’s “entertainment “ features.

  • @jdpst20
    @jdpst20 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm in the need to replace my 2003 Montero and I LOVE This SUV but with some issues looming and 200k miles I'm looking to replace it with a new "adventure" mobile. I have a roof tent and Love hitting up the mountains and beaches and I've never been much of a truck guy, but I'm looking at the Frontier Pro-4x, Tacoma TRD, and 4Runner TRD both "off road versions' and I just don't know what I might want to look at. I still love SUVs and the utility of the back enclosed area but I do like the idea of more of a rugged truck bed which I can toss in gear, firewood, dirty stuff or whatever. I'm living in Hawaii now, but moving to Colorado in about 9 months so I'm looking for something to last me 8-10 years of reliability. I know the Nissan seem a bit "bland" in the interior but I don't really need many features. My 03 Montero has an aftermarket stereo with BT and that is perfect for me and heated seats, that is literally all the creature comforts I need.

    • @desertdudeoverland
      @desertdudeoverland  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the comment! You have a huge move ahead of you!! Well I first want to say that you should not sell the Montero. Never sell a vehicle you love. You should keep it and then buy a new truck or suv. With a truck you have way more flexibility. It’s much easier to haul trash and stuff with a truck without messing up the back of the suv. I use the bed for everything. I have never seen a downside to not getting a xterra which I considered before I bought the truck. The 4Runner TRD has the looks but you’re limited on bed space and horse power because it’s not the fastest engine. The Tacoma would give you a good sized plastic bed where you can then put a bed rack for your tent and still have room for stuff. The pro4x is the same story. There are bed racks for it to that mount to the utilitrack which I have considered buying. The only reason I’ve been camping with a tent is because the rooftop tent isn’t the easiest to take on and off myself and I’m worried about theft and weather damage. With the pro4x you don’t get an outlet in the bed but my van has two inside that I never use because you have to leave the engine running. You can get a good Honda generator for real camping. The stereo in the pro4x is best in class. Don’t let the other reviewers fool you. There is nothing bland about the frontier. It’s 10,000$ less than any other truck right now. Have you noticed the trend in TH-cam reviews? Every year model they complain that it’s “getting outdated” if it’s not all new. That’s why trucks are easily 60,000$ now. Thanks for your comment. I hope this helps. At the end of the day, get the truck or suv that catches your eye the most and you won’t regret it.

    • @desertdudeoverland
      @desertdudeoverland  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can also get the extra strength truck cap (camper shell) that holds a rooftop tent on top which then allows for more lockable storage in the bed. Long story short. You get a lot more storage and utility in the truck without having to clean the back seats out with a vacuum constantly. Believe me I have two husky dogs and it’s a much better day when they stay outside the cab in the bed space.

    • @jdpst20
      @jdpst20 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Broke Pro yeah I would consider keeping the Montero. it’s well paid off just shy of 200k and I’ve put some maintenance money into it but I think to try to get another 100k miles or even 70k min I’ll have to put in about 5-7k in an overhaul. In the next 9 months I’d I kept it I would for sure need some new rubber to move to Colorado, toss on some new bilatien HD shocks maybe and springs, overlook all the joints and bearings, the CATS I think are shot so replace cats and o2 sensors constantly showing a CEL for those, it’s got a oil leak going on so I’d wanna see about little engine overhaul. And it’s leaking water on heavy rain I think from some rust developing in A-Pilar but other than those things I do love the trucks NS in the 5 years of owning it it’s def given some great memories.
      I found a great deal on 2019 frontiers though through Nissan now so I might go check one out this week. I just don’t have the space for two vehicles plus wife’s car

    • @jdpst20
      @jdpst20 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So to add yeah if I could find a good truck/off road mechanic or shop to do some work to it plus some work myself I think if I spend 6k and it lasted 70-80k more miles or say 2 years I could be happy with that outcome. I just need to do some research and find a one stop shop to just get it a full look over and overhaul.

    Funny people wouldn't call this off-road because you're not running through rivers and rocks crawling.
    I don't know what people expect off-road to be which in general is a unpaved road lol

      @desertdudeoverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well water and rocks are super destructive on trucks so it’s not something I drive in all the time. Leaving the pavement is off-road 😂 indeed. The tougher the obstacles the more wear and tear the vehicle will suffer.

    Would this haul a 20 foot boat?

    • @desertdudeoverland
      @desertdudeoverland  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as it doesn't exceed the towing limit of the pro-4x yeah why not. A boat is much lower than a RV camper. It definitely has the power if that's what you're asking.

      Yes. I have a 19' Bayliner, pulls it great up or down hills. No issues at all. I leave overdrive off during any pull.

    All that matters is do all four wheels lock? Limited slip or locking diffs? I go more place with a 2 wheel drive S10 with limited slip than most modern 4 wheel drives that the wheel with the least traction is the one that spins. Idiots actually buy those pos's.

    • @desertdudeoverland

      All 4 wheels lock. You have no chance of going where I go with a 2WD truck. It’s not possible.

    Those Dynapro's suck ass that's why you were having trouble in the sand.
    That is like the most basic ATW tire on the market!

    • @desertdudeoverland
      @desertdudeoverland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah they are basic but they actually handle real well. When you let the air pressure down they handle amazing. They aren’t very thick so it’s easy to get flats
