I love this series already! It is so funny that even after watching this show regularly for literal decades that I still don’t know all of the references. I know these videos will really ramp up through seasons 4 and 5, since that’s when the show became so known for its pop culture nods, as well as its speed. I think it’s interesting how much of the content that was mentioned revolved around the 50’s. I knew that many of Lorelai’s references were very 80’s centric, given the time period of her upbringing, but I wonder if those older references were based off of things that ASP picked up in her childhood from her parents. Lord knows I wouldn’t know nearly as much about the 70’s without my parents. In addition to the many references the show makes, I have come to notice how many phrases/callbacks that this show has created. I am positive that I have said “If you’re going to throw your life away, he better have a motorcycle” far more than the average human. 😅 Love the video. Can’t wait for more!
This is so lovely ☺️ Thank you so much for watching!! I'm glad you've enjoyed! And totally, you can see how a lot of what's brought up were probably nice callbacks for ASP, giving those old references a chance to see a new light!
I love that you’re doing long form videos now! I’m here for it! I grew up in America in the 90s but was extremely sheltered so I don’t understand a lot of cultural references either, so I feel like this is educational and I appreciate it! Keep them coming
Thanks so much for doing this pop culture references project of Gilmore Girls. I am from Germany , living in the US now, I adore GG, my forever comfort show. The pop culture references go often over my head and flying past my ear. So I am very grateful that you explain this so well . Please continue , I appreciate it very much.
Just subscribed. I am old so I get most of the references, but there were a lot that I either missed or just didn't understand. I look forward to reliving the Gilmore Girls with you. Thank you for your many many hours of hard work!
Oh my gosh THANK YOU! So many references went over my head lolo I'm so glad to understand this now! I've seen lists of course but dang obviously it's a huge read. Just to have 1 episode of references explained in text list form is like reading part of a book. This makes it so much easier to digest. Also it is a huge amount of work you had to do so it's highly impressive.
This is the best thing I´ve ever seen! I´ve been a Gilmore Girls fan since 2005 and I´ve watched it probably every day and I still don´t get everything, than you so much.
Thank you for this!!! I've watched the whole series several times and always plan to investigate the references that go over my head but never do!! Now i don't have to! My brain thanks you soo much for the details you're giving too! Now i need to start a list of books and movies to consume, first on the list being Rosemary's Baby!! ❤❤❤
I've watched Gilmore's Girls a million times over it's one of my favourite shows and this is the thing i never knew i needed, im so excited and buckled in for this series bc damn you'll be here for a while Also the rory giving up Chilton for dean makes complete sense to be, im now a 22 year old woman but 16 year old did a lot of silly things
Ahh I'm so glad you're here!! Ahaa totally - I'm started something I've gotta see through now 🥲 And that's one more added to the Team Would-Give-It-All-Up-For-That-Haircut 😂
At about 8:25 you mentioned Sookie's line about the " Protestants." She's referring to people who are WASPs White. Anglo Saxon Protestants. It's usually used to refer to the upper middle class of people, specifically towards the North Eastern side of the US. I LOVE that someone is going through all the cultural references in this show. However, because you're not American you're going to miss things like this (like an American may not fully comprehend terms like barrister or tori). There are some references that are regional specific that shows the writers were familiar with that region of the United States to some degree as well.
Thank you for the info! Though must ask: does this tie into the joke? I mean like, the protestants loving oatmeal - does it being more specifically WASPs change that?
@@kazascoottvthere’s a cultural stereotype of WASPs being extremely bland people with white/bland tastes and being uptight. As an American the joke comes off as a dig at how boring and stodgy WASPs are, and also maybe a subtle “tight assess that need a high fiber diet” joke
I actually love this concept! Being officially gen z and therefore watching this show very much later in life, I don't get a lot of the references, but I love the fast pace of it!
I don’t know you and I already love you! Thanks so much for this kind of videos! I am on my way of C1 english leve, I have a long story with learning English and is a surprise to hear you talking about my favorite tv show! Greatings from 🇲🇽. You are helping me a lot!
Instead of rewatching gg for the cozy autumn season I’ll be watching your videos!😂 I really needed this given there’s so many references that I don’t know at all!
Love this series, quite a feat to do. Have been listening whilst doing work. Whenever I watch GG, I usually get most of the references (90s baby) but there's always a few that I have no idea about 😊
Well this was amazing, I've been a fan since it started first close to Rory's age, now more on the Lorelai side hahah but as well needed this deep dive. Please keep this coming
Yassss! I was too young when this show came out. Around 10. Not my style of show at 10. Now as an adult I’ve watched it and don’t get the references, so this is so helpful
31:50 -- as someone who was a 15 year old girl at one point in my life, I agree with you!! I remember being that age and I don't think I would have ever given up my education for a guy, AND I think it's actually out of character for Rory. I'm VERY confident that the only reason she does is because it's the first episode and a lot of exposition needs to be given. In this case, we're given a glimpse into Lorelai's past and how she ended up as a young mom: Lorelai says something about how she threw everything away for a guy once too, and that she should've known Rory would do something similar because, as she states to Rory: "You're me!" I'm SO certain this conflict was created purely for them to have an argument and show the audience how the two of them deal with it. We see that Lorelai is first and foremost Rory's friend, but will take on the Mom role in order to do what's best for her daughter. We also see that she makes amends in order to resolve their issue, and by the end of the episode she is more open to hearing about Rory's crush. All of this is done in service of showing the kind of relationship they have, thus setting the tone for the entire show. And THAT is the reason (my theory anyway), for Rory wanting to throw away her education for a guy.
TH-cam algo, thanks for recommending this video. This is a cool idea to go through all the pop culture references in old TV shows like Gilmore Girls and Friends. Just subscribed. Looking forward to watching all your vids
As someone who is an American and was just a couple years younger than Rory (watching when the show was on air), I didn’t understand most of the pop culture references at the time. The DVDs actually included a little booklet back in the day that explained all the *Gilmoreisms* (sorry if you say this in the vid, I haven’t finished watching yet)
So much pop culture reference! I am happy you explained them for me, so I can now laugh at them, but I still gotta learn some more American pop culture😂 ! Thank you for these videos!
Great content 😄 have been following your videos on Instagram, good to see you on TH-cam. You have actually made me understand so many references from Gilmore Girls and also Friends ✨️
I am American, and was a teen when Gilmore Girls came out... Of course I never understood all of the references. As I’ve gotten older & watched more movies, learned more history, etc, I've picked up more of the references, but still not nearly all of them. I have re-watched it every year for over a decade & I have never been this excited to follow a youtube series. I am SO READY for this lol 🤪😂
As someone the same age as Lore I don’t even blink at the references. We were raised on a vast lexicon of American pop culture, if it was filmed or recorded we were exposed to it.
Love the work you're doing, it's such a good idea! I'm on my first watch run these days and it's such nice background information to have on the way 💪🏼 keep up the good work, i'd love to watch some more
Two tips for future videos: 1) can you add more time stamps? I know it's a lot of work but I love when I can easily navigate within a video when I'm looking for something 2) when you mention actors who aren't part of the show (like Alex Borstein) can you add a picture of them? I didn't remember who Alex Borstein was and had to look it up while watching your video But these are just two little things. The video is really great ❤❤❤
here from the insta shorts!! THANKS A LOT dude you are a life saviour but can ye complete the first seasons within this fall? we gonna rewatch it in winter!
Thank you so much for being here!! Ooh I mean, that is a thought...the current schedule is 1 GG and 1 Friends per week, but I could put Friends on hold and focus on 2 GG a week, at least for the first season - that'd get all 21 episodes out by mid-November...
ohhh I never got the nick at nite ref because the programming changed! when I was a kid in the early-mid 2000s nick at nite primarily played roseanne, golden girls, and fresh prince, not the older 50s stuff
Hey, I watched the Gilmore Girls years after it was canceled. I didn't get most of the " Pop Culture "? I was born in 1961. My Children, born in 1980, '85, and '87 didn't get it? I actually got more.

This dude is going to be so exhausted going through all of Gilmore Girls. I hope he’s ready to dedicate the next 7 years of his life this 😂😂
Exhausted already 🥲 But worth it if y'all enjoy it!
153 episodes, not including reunion. I’m here for however much you get through 😅
Not all heroes where capes. I’ve been rewatching this series for years and still don’t get all of them 😭
Donchu worry - we’re in this together
This is so underrated! You must’ve had to put so much work into this!
Why thank you!! It's a labour of love 😂
I’ve watched GG for many years. I gotta be honest. I needed this full on deep dive into it to understand those pop culture references.
I’m so glad these videos found their way to you!! I hope they’ll prove useful on your next watch through ✨😁
The Officer Krupke reference also makes sense that he is a somewhat liked character as so is Luke.

This !!! Finally !!! Subscribed 2 mins into the video. I can't wait to finally understand 50% of my favourite childhood show.
This is what I really need just right now. Autumn season is starting and a rewatch is needed to be done! ❤
So much respect for taking on this mammoth of a project. Love the attention to detail!
this is such a fun idea!! I hope you keep going
Thank you!! Currently 7 vids in - plenty more to come ✨
the title came up in my recommended and I genuinely gasped. Hooh boy this is not a project for the weak. well done!!

That’s so lovely of you to say 🥹 So happy you’re here!! ✨
Thank you for doing this! I have been wanting to do this for a while lmao
Thanks you for watching!! Hope you enjoy the future instalments 😁
TH-cam algo, thanks for recommending this video. This is a cool idea to go through all the pop culture references in old TV shows like Gilmore Girls and Friends. Just subscribed. Looking forward to watching all your vids

I’m so here for the long form videos this is SO GOOD
An absolute OG you are ✨
Hi, this is a great series! It's def gonna be my binge watching series lol. Also I can't believe they had all these references in just one episode😂
Ahaa thank you!! Hope you enjoy the rest that come out!

That was really enjoyable. Thank you for doing this.
That's so great ❤❤❤ thank you for your work!!!

And thank you for watching!! New video coming out tomorrow 😊
Great content 😄 have been following your videos on Instagram, good to see you on TH-cam. You have actually made me understand so many references from Gilmore Girls and also Friends ✨️
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for being here ☺️
Wow, this is so helpful. Thank You so much!!!
So glad you enjoyed! Hope the rest of them are of help as well 😁
Calling someone Ruth Gordon is likely just a polite way of calling them creepy.
thank you! this video is so usefull!
Thank you so much for this! Excited to watch all of your videos and to finally understand all of these references! 😄
Ahaa yay! I'm so glad the vids came to your page! Hope you enjoy them ☺️
I love this! I can’t wait for more! I share this with my GG obsessed friends. Also, team JESS! 💜
I'm so glad you're here!! Already finishing up the next one now! Aaaand that's another one for Team Jess it seems...
I am American, and was a teen when Gilmore Girls came out... Of course I never understood all of the references. I LOVE this content!!! Thank you so much.
I’m also not from the US. And I needed this.
I’m so glad!! Thank you for being here ☺️ So many more to come!!
Wow you have such a good voice!!!!

The Misery scene! I think I watched that too young and it really stayed with me! Great film though!
Two tips for future videos:
1) can you add more time stamps? I know it's a lot of work but I love when I can easily navigate within a video when I'm looking for something
2) when you mention actors who aren't part of the show (like Alex Borstein) can you add a picture of them? I didn't remember who Alex Borstein was and had to look it up while watching your video
But these are just two little things. The video is really great ❤❤❤
I appreciate you watching, and appreciate the feedback!! Consider it done ✨
Just added timestamps to the individual references in this video, and will do so for the Friends one too, and all future vids!
@@kazascoottv wooooow you are amazing 🤩 thank you!!
Listening to this dude talking about talking about Kerouac is the weirdest thing I've seen all week haha
Such a great video idea. Thank you for doing this!
Thank you!! And thank you for being here!! Plenty more on their way each week!!
Team Logan!
That is so great!!
Thank you ☺️
The series dvds used to come with explanations of the references 😂
here from the insta shorts!!

I'm glad it found you!
Team Rory needs to figure her life out before being in a committed relationship with anyone.
All the votes on this one
Amazing, love this!!
Oh my god I LOVE THIS!!!!!
Thank you 🥰 Hope you enjoy the rest!!
Just started watching this and I can't wait for the "being fired for being politically incorrect" episode
when he said "i was 10 years old" i was triggered and then i was like oh yeah me too 🤣
Team Jess all the way. I do understand most of the references even though I am not American. But I really enjoyed seeing this vid.
We've got one for Team Jess! And thank you - I'm glad you watched, even if they were already familiar!
Sooooo many references😂😂😂
And they just keep packing more and more in 😂
You are on a nobel quest
Love the idea! Instant subscribe from me :) X
Oh yay! Thank you so much for being here ☺️
Anyone know where to find unaired pilot? I only found one scene, is there a full episode to view?
Can you add a tally of pop culture references? Maybe even break them down?
Absolutely - the scoreboard and rankings will start appearing in the next episode 😁
Just found this channel! Where there be more after S1 E5? :)
Of course! Trying to aim for 2 vids per week!
Where can I watch the unaired pilot?
also a 17 year old girl, rory giving up chilton for a guy she just met is INSANE and also so unlike her as a character
Right!? 😅
Hey, I watched the Gilmore Girls years after it was canceled. I didn't get most of the " Pop Culture "? I was born in 1961. My Children, born in 1980, '85, and '87 didn't get it? I actually got more.
I think Melissa was better as Sookie
I honestly don't think Dean was the whole reason she didn't want to go to Chilton. You can be excited about something, and also be nervous about it, and Rory doesn't always handle change well - I think the reality of switching to an elite private school started to hit her, but she didn't want to admit to herself how scared she was, so she latched on to Dean as a convenient excuse!
who's Laurel and why does he keep lying?
Ahh I think you’ve misheard - it’s actually someone called Loh who relies on people a lot ✨
Can't understand how anyone who doesn't get the references could follow the show. I feel like you need them to truly grasp much of the show.
I think the actors felt the same way - they admitted to not understanding half of what they came out with 😂
The beauty and the magic of the show is that you don't have to know everything because you can kind of infer via context. I watched the show in the original run as a young adult, fresh out of college, so I was pretty steeped in the culture, but many of the references were just enough to understand what they were getting at without knowing the full story of everything.
Sorry, I have the sudden urge to be the annoying wise ass in the comments:
Actually.. in the Book Annie cuts off Paul's foot. Guess they thought that would be to brutal for the movie 🤷🏻♀️
